Despite some important missing features, a slow data network, and call quality that doesn't always deliver, the Apple iPhone sets a new benchmark for an integrated cell phone and MP3 player.
How the hell do you give it an 8 when it doesn't even do the BASICS of communications properly? Poor call quality/slow internet/wonky 'keyboard'. Someone at Cnet is getting payola. Wasn't it Apple that continues to reject built in FM because it takes away from the purity of a simple music player...then they release this mishmash?
The zune is the best!
Apple do me a favor and just stay with the iPod and leave the phones alone.
I want $100 before I approve this story!
MSNBC even gave it a good review...I doubt Apple is paying for good reviews. Cnet has always been kinda anti Apple until recently.
the rzer was almost 500$. So anything expensive is the new must have. Then cheaper version from other companies will come out.
Were they joking? They made is sound like the phone was going to create a new world that would blow your mind away. It does have good feature, without a doubt but nothing out of this world. It's just a normal phone with new features.
Browse n4g and respond to dumb comments from people who don't own the phone. I can and I just did it with my iPhone. Seriously, I love my iphone. The text takes some getting use to, but for the most part its a decent phone to. Oh and edge is not that bad. Its a lot faster than I would have thought.
KingJames: Yes, mine can. And I don't have an iPhone. That's not a new feature! Plenty of phones do that.
Are you located in the US? I'm and I don't know of a phone here in the US that will allow you to do that. Most phones display WEP pages not HTML. So the carrier dictates what you want to view. Why don't you use your phone to respond to this post? I am and it's very easy to do with screen size the iphone.
My palm treo 700wx does that easily, i check my stocks, post comments on forums AND listen to Podcast as well as the iPhone can. Also the Sprint vision is faster than the edge. Now let me ask you this... can you watch direcTV through your iPhone and control the cable box from anywhere in the world without paying monthly fees??? No, atleast not yet. But my PalmTreo700 can do that through slingplayer without a problem. (:P)
I heard i thought on G4 that you can even send or use text messages. I don't know about you guys but that's my most used feature in my current phone.
say, don't judge a PS3/360 game before it comes out and try it out for yourself. And yet EVERYONE here disses this phone before they even try it out. I must admit, I do wish my iPhone had IM and 3G and all that other good stuff. But I still love it compared to my previous cell phones. Mp3 player, internet wifi, messaging, sleek look. I love it. Don't listen to critics, good score bad score, it doesn't matter. What matters is TRY out the products for yourself. And give it YOUR honest hands on opinion. If anyone here has a question about the iPhone, please don't hesitate to ask me. Game on my gaming brothers.
that can also surf and call people.... it is revolutionary. Most of the review I have read say that it takes a few days to get use to but the keyboard is actually pretty nice. The whole reason Apple put the Wifi in the phone is so people can have a better internet surfing experience. Email and SMS using the 2.5G service is fine. The menu system for the phone is totally cool and is one of the best for a phone. Apple and At&t said they will have Business sync email shortly in an update. Come on people this is an first time out the door product. You don't support it because it is perfect , you support it because you want to send a message to the industry that "business as usual" isn't cutting it. If it were anybody else I would shrug it off but Apple has proven to show that they stick by their product and do constantly improve on them. Now maybe I can get rid of two devices and just carry one around.
In a way, you could look at the iPhone as the 6g iPod everyone wanted. Bluetooth, touchscreen, 8 gigs (aint bad), widescreen video, good battery life. Thats what poeple wanted in the next iPods. I wish it had 80gigs like my iPod, but I ain't complaining. I barely filled 2 gigs of music with that thing. lol
bubble for you and your exquisite view on things
I bought one 8gig iPhone as soon as the Cingular doors opened. You see, I'm an actual owner, not like most of you who are criticizing the damn phone without so much as even touching the phone. This phone is awesome. It does everything Steve Jobs said. It is fcuking sexy! How many phones you know where there are some people forming lines days before its release????????????? I didnt think so. Have fun with your tracfone
but i get what your saying. The phone was worth it. lol I was also in line at the iPhone launch. What number were youin line? I was 3rd. P.S. I too am a PS3 owner, so that was mean what you said. LOL
now i see how ps3 owners feel. Im an xboxer, but i turned on a ps3 in a pawn shop and it is oh so quiet, excellent build........the games will come. Anyways, I went to the mall cingular of all places, got there 20 minutes before they opened, and I was number 20 in line. Surprisingly, it was locations around town other than the mall that had the huge mob scenes. But I guarantee, I will own an iPhone for probably 10 years, counting tradeins for newer ones but, Apple really knows what it means to be cool
I don't get how people can judge a product for what they THINK it is, instead of trying it out for themselves, and give an opinion on what they like and dislike firsthand. About the iPhone, I also see myself owning this phone for a long while. The next iPhone should have all the stuff these poeple criticize for not having. 3G, IM, ...etc. But that wont be out for some time. For a first attempt at phones, Apple did an excellent job. P.S. I heard the Apple stores got it worst with the mob scene.
All the sites on the internet now are reviewing the iphone and mostly the bad things are poor coverage from AT&T and lack of 3G network. And I'm the apple rep in my collage in Dublin Ireland so I'm waiting To get mine in November and I've asked and the there are 2 networks in Europe running the iphone o2 and vodaphone. Both of which have great coverage and both of which use 3G so it may be possible that a 3G enabled iphone may be coming to europe. Also funny thing my younger brother classmates are all more excited about the iphone than my father and his buisness friends. I should think Santa is going to be doing a lot of buisness for apple this year.
State side 3G is only available in bigger metropolitan areas. Which doesn't help anyone living outside the cities or in smaller cities. So I can see why Apple held off the 3G add on until probably iPhone 2(probably will be announced at MacWorld 08' in Jan). Word coming out of Europe is the iPhone will be 3G when it debuts there later this yr and Vodaphone and T-Mobile will be the carriers. Some say the announcement maybe coming next week. If T-Mobile gets the deal in Europe then I'd expect T-Mobile to get the NA deal too once the AT&T exclusive contract expires in 5 yrs. AT&T just announced it's buying out CellularOne in the US, so coverage in rural areas should pickup some.
The PS3 or the iphone??? PS3: OVER HYPED and UNDERDELIVERED. iPhone: It does what it does and never claims to "Blow the other phones out the water" Me, I sold my dusty PS3 and GOT the iphone...I can say that I used it more already than my PS3.
of what i said earlier because i see many of you weren't happy with my and others criticism. I was trying to say it's not my the best option. On top of the 600 price tag i don't want to break my contract and pay more to leave, and get locked in to a 2 year contract. Plus 8 gig definitely isn't enough space for all my mp3's. I have a 60 gig video which does just fine with me because i have over 10,000 song and some movies. Also I already get Internet with my blackberry and yes i know it's not the "same" internet but going online is not something I fine myself doing on the road. I know this is very opinionated but in my eyes i have a phone, i text a lot, i have a Ipod, and get e-mail and the "small" internet on my blackberry. Not trying to start a flame war, just saying i don't think this is a must buy or smart buy for me considering what i already have. p.s I respect your opinion just sharing mine.
Yeah its really cool and all, but I only use my phone for calling and could care less about using it for anything else. I already have a mp3 player thats smaller than that, when I go to the gym and want to listen to music im not going to want to have that thing strapped to my arm and get all sweaty. When im not at the gym im either in my car, at my office, or at my house. I can play mp3s in all of those places already, so why would I want to use my phone to do that. If I did play mp3s on my phone all I would be doing is eating up my battery life for what I really want to do with my phone... call people. Overall I think its a cool phone and has alot of neat features, just dont see a point to it except to show it off to the people at the office.
Just imagine one device can do everything...photos, mp3, videos, celphone, internet (fast and slow)... and more 3rd parties software in the future... or you can use the palm...blackberry...BIG AND UGLY....
K, multiple devices, one battery.... Or I can just stick to my mp3 player for my media device, and buy a cheap as phone to call people when I need to. and save around $300.
just know that me, I, us, we are very happy with the phone, it is a Godsend, converging all of the features I need into one small, sexy device.
does it need to be restart for every a few days? the way I see OSX it doesn't really need to be restarted like windows/mobile
Apple wont be a loser in cellphone section.. believe me.. their Design is AMAZING , and they know what features Many people needs.. battery life is impressive .. I allways want a WiFi big screen phone for surfing web .. and now Iphone is the best choice .. I allways listen to music.. see music videos.. and some VOD (warcraft games) .. I need Iphone.. I need all of its features.. u say it sux.. dont buy it..
iPhone isn't the first cell phone with a built-in MP3 player, but it is the first MP3 player with a built-in cell phone. Personally I couldn't walk around in public with a set of ear-buds plugged into my cell phone without feeling like I was just laughed off the short bus. Thanks to Apple I can leave my cell phone at home & still keep my self-esteem intact because holding my iPod up to my ear to utter "can you hear me now" strikes me as ultra chic. It looks like a lot of reviewers are down on the iPhone because it's not 1) the best cell phone or 2) the 6th generation iPod. Negative hits on it's features as a cell phone are certainly fair, but downgrading a review because it isn't a stand-alone iPod has me scratching my head in wonderment. Did they forgot it's called an iPhone? Handy iPhone features: 1. Combines a cell phone & an iPod into a single device to tote 2. A real web browser with Wi-Fi for surfing on the go 3. Conspicuously slip it into the front pocket of your jeans at a club to form a hungry line begging, "Can I see it? Can I touch it?"
When we all seen Steve Jobs unveil the iPhone, people were amazed, including myself. You immediately had naysayers claiming that you wouldnt be able to do all of that stuff on one device with ease..............well, they were all wrong. Besides the device being one hell of a chick magnet, I am not one to be easily impressed by anything. But I was so impressed just by my initial contact with my new iPhone that I decided that there would be no other phone I buy unless it is iPhone revisions from now on. The reason I gave it a 9.5 rating instead of perfect is that because it didnt offer 3g from the get go, but 3g isnt even available where I live anyway, so my personal rating for the iphone is 10 out of 10, and as a national rating it get a 9.5, and having a brother that installs systems for Cingular, he told me that the revision including 3g will be out in December, just in time for Christmas. But I personally would gladly buy that one too and use this phone as backup if ever needed. This is one of those items where to me, money is not an object. I have never believed in a product more than the way I believe in the iPhone. And, unlike the sidekick 3 when it launched, I think Apple had about 3 million units at launch, which is a victory in itself. One more thing and I'll let this discussion sleep, if you're looking for new phone service and long to have true digital convergence, then look no further than the iPhone. I've always been Microsoft over Apple, pc over Apple, Zune over iPod, but nothing comes close to the offerings that the iphone present to you. If you havent seen it, watch the unveiling by Steve Jobs, watch some gadget guru have fun with it, and know that everything they're doing, you CAN actually do the same thing right out of the box, not to mention youtube being integrated into your iphone which I think is awesome. For those who have an iPhone, buy that clear acylic case for it to protect it against dropping, and continue to enjoy your iPhone, and for those of you who are still on the fence, once you decide to get one, you will never go back to a conventional phone...........I know I won't. Have fun
Some of you are a bunch of hypocrites, you sit here and say how iphone has this and that, sure it does, but the actual coverage is half-decent at best. Just like a ps3 it does more things than the 360, but you sit there and say it doesn't matter because what actually matters are the games. Well, let me tell you what matters with a cellphone is coverage and AT&T does not have good coverage. Also, no customer service on weekends? Fine, sit there and admire your iphone all you want, but don't ever criticize me for liking the PS3.
very slick and sexy product.... I have 2 problems with it though (and yes i have tried the iPhone out...well my friend's iPhone). One, the phone aspect of the "iPhone" happens to be the WORST part of this device. Sure it's great for listening to music and very neat for browsing the internet, but this product is supossed to be a smart/cellphone first and ipod/browser second. Calling someone shouldn't be a hassle and it is on the iPhone. My second problem is that only 1 service provider supports it... just check how many problems people had activating the iphone service with AT&T already and you'll see what i mean. There's also some minor issues (IMO) such as the touch screen keyboard is not good for fast typing or texting like the other qwerty pads in your normal smartphones. Am i saying i don't want an iPhone?? No, it's too sexy to not want. But will i pay $499 for one?? maybe when they make a nano version with more features... but sure as heck not now. Till then i'm stuck with my 1year sprint nextel plan and my palm treo 700wx (great phone). Now... other than that, WTF does this have to do with SONY and the PS3?? you fanboys are annoying as heck. and as for the people that say they have sold their PS3s b/c it was collecting dust.... well... you guys probably have never even owned a PS3 and is just BSing through your teeth, secondly, if you did have a PS3 and traded it in... then you have no patience what so ever. Who in the right state of mind would trade in a PS3 without even giving it a year to get some games out?? Sh!t, i had a 360 at launch and all it did was collect dust till Gears came out, did i trade it in??? NO, Why?? b/c i KNEW games i wanted to play was going to be released in the future and I KNEW it takes TIME for developers to develop games. You freaking sony and MS fanboys have no logic, THINK before you guys start flame wars and ruin a topic.
