Nintendo confirms WiiWare - Original downloadable Wii games

Nintendo has just issued a press release announcing WiiWare, a game-creation service that will allow developers large and small to create new downloadable video game content for sale by Nintendo through the Wii Shop Channel.

In the Press Release, Reggie Fils-Aime spoke highly of the initiative, "Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "WiiWare brings new levels of creativity and value to the ever-growing population of Wii owners." So while some developers may struggle to fund or create a full blown retail game, they can take their idea to the WiiWare part of the shopping channel.

The first WiiWare content will launch in early 2008.

The story is too old to be commented.

is that what the smell is?

I agree it is fantastic news. One of the main probs with the virtual console was the lack of original games.

I was expecting to hear something like this at E3, and it looks like there's more goodness coming our way...

July 11th is going to be awesome.

Also, I wonder if Wii Software will support motion sensing?

I smell an add-on hard drive in the future... or at least one would hope.

I am not sure if it would need to be an add on HDD (I think it would be cool if there was for sure) but you can get a 4 GB memory card for the Wii for like $60 and you will be more than able as someone trying to make agame for the Wii to do it on a 4 GB chip. As the chips get larger soon it will be less and less needed on a system like the Wii that doesn't need a HDD to cache graphics assets like the PS3 and 360 do.

i hope this doesn't lead to announcements of the multicolored wiis with built in hard drives.

that would be so easy for nintendo. they could just stop making wiis for one day. the whole world would selll out instantly, and then they could make new models....

ahhh i'm stupid when i'm tired
