Mass Effect 2 and Bioware: A step forward or back for LGBT portrayals in gaming?

As gaming becomes more of a mainstream medium, it begins to experience the same kind of scrutiny that other forms of media undergo. There have been numerous discussions with LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) portrayals in television, music, and movies, but sadly these discussions have not resolved these difficult issues.

But the world of gaming presents a new medium in which these issues can be explored and discussed. Bioware is a company that has been tackling the issues of LGBT portrayals in its games, some of the industry's biggest releases of the past few years.
