Q&A with Final Fantasy XIII devs

Examiner: Final Fantasy XIII is finally hitting U.S. shores next month. While the development team are effectively done with the project, that did not stop them from flying to San Francisco to speak with Examiner (among other media outlets). The visitors included producer Motomu Toriyama (Final Fantasy VII, VIII, X, Blood of Bahamut, among other titles), battle director Yuji Abe, and producer Yoshinori Kitase (Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VII, VIII, X, X-2, Kingdom Hearts, among other titles). "Once players get a handle on the mechanisms of the game system toward the middle of the game, characters are able to freely explore an open world in Pulse. Then it becomes more like an open world RPG where the storyline isn't as heavily restricting on the characters' actions and the player can really enjoy the battle system."

What does he mean by "in Pulse"???

It's the name of the world in FF13.

It's the name of the other planet in FF13, the one with plant-life. You travel there eventually during the course of the game and the open world/less linear aspect of the game happens once you get there.

Cocoon is basically an inhabited moon, and you end up on the "planet" Pulse about 15-20 hours into the game.

Most people complain about the linearity of the game. When you get the open field area of pulse which has been shown in a bunch of videos, there's a bunch of missions that you can do. However, once you get past the big open field area, the rest of the game forces you down the same linear path.
