How Nintendo Helped Launch The PlayStation

Every time you play your Sony PlayStation, Playstation 2 or Playstation 3, do you take a moment to say, "Thanks, Nintendo!"? You don't? Well you should, because it's unclear if it hadn't been for Nintendo's indecisiveness if the PlayStation would have ever been born.

after 16 years, this author discovers the story of the first playstaion and how it was made and decided to share this secret with everyone (who by now already knows this, unless you start playing this gen and never heard this before).so for a "professional technology blogger" you sure know your stuff :P
and no I wouldn't thank nintendo cus if it weren't for sony who decided to continue the work instead of nintendo, the gaming industry would have missed a console that became later one of the best consoles in history ;)

sinncross2802d ago

Good point.
It was really Sony who took the initiative after the Nintendo/ Sony deal fell through to get the Playstation out.

ChickeyCantor2800d ago

"and no I wouldn't thank nintendo cus if it weren't for sony who decided to continue the work "

But then the question should be, if Nintendo never stepped up to Sony...would there still be a console from Sony?

Cause if Nintendo never did step up to them, the "continuing" part would have never existed.

Once again, Nintendo's best innovation is making Mario jumping on turtles!!!!!!

phantomexe2802d ago

I do love my ps3 but in truth sony has never innovated.Sony ran off of nintendo ideas since the ps1 then ran out of ideas for the ps3.I'm not trying to bad mouth some of you sony diehard fanboys but thats the truth and now a days sony just Copy and Paste what MS and nintendo does not that this is a bad thing.I do however love the ps3 for the games uc2 killzone 2 and such. The real innovater today is still nintendo.

GrandTheftZamboni2801d ago

Damn straight. Sony copied Eye Toy from Natal and went back in time.

Monsignor2801d ago

First console to use DVD? First console to use Blu-ray? Not to mention, the first console to use Cell Architecture. Yeah, Sony are a bunch of copycats.

The Playstation franchise has been quite innovative (especially when it comes to hardware). When it comes to hardware, I believe Sony beats out the competition, by far. Nintendo comes up with some cool games (combined with their accessories), but their hardware in their console is far from being innovative. Microsoft's hardware innovations are nothing you haven't seen in a common PC.

@GrandTheftStreetcar

lol that was funny Pal

AWBrawler2801d ago

what the heck does blu-ray and dvd really offer in terms of "Gameplay" I loved the PS2 and PS1, but it wasn't cos of the DVD and CD playback. lol

fatstarr2800d ago (Edited 2800d ago )

Not to be negative

but last i checked Sony has been using the same controller design since ps1 which is a snes controller with analog sticks and extra buttons.

Sony just started this new thing with power. the ps1 was bested by n64 and the dreamcast in terms of power.

ps2 the Gamecube and the xbox were more powerful.

last i remembered the gameboy camera did innovative things with cameras and gaming...

i don't see where sony has innovated?
in terms of taking things mainstream and putting it in their competitors head to have the competition follow that title goes to Nintendo.

ps3, sony took the next step to spend money in hardware and new mediums something new :D finally instead of buying timed exclusives and screwing out companies.

Tito082800d ago (Edited 2800d ago )

Only best innovation by Nintendo is making Mario jumping on turtles!!! And If Nintendo was that Innovator, then there would of been Final Fantasy 7 on the N64!!!

Sony may have copied Nintendo, but Sony copied the best way, 1 analog stick on the 64, Sony made it dual for the PS1 and that controller design is still present now, Nintendo didn't come up first with fully 3D graphics on a console.... If Nintendo is the "innovator" that means there was no need for them to go to Sony in the 1rst place... There was no system before the PS2 where u could watch DVD movies, most of the DVD sucess is due to the PS2, use the DVD format to make bigger games besides the blue disc format. And to prove that adults can also play videogames, I'm tired of jumping on turtles!!!!

Fatstarr

last 2 gens, Sony didn't have the most powerful of the all systems, but they managed to beat their rivals, not because of the graphics or the processor, it was the games... The controler thingy, don't use it as a excuse cause Microsoft, Sega, Panasonic all have that same controller thing, they might have copied Nintendo, but they made it best, there was not 4 shoulder buttoms on a Nintendo controller!!!!

ChickeyCantor2800d ago (Edited 2800d ago )

" Sony copied Eye Toy "

Even your joke fails, cause the Eye Toy was not "invented" by sony.

"Only best innovation by Nintendo is making Mario jumping on turtles!!! And If Nintendo was that Innovator, then there would of been Final Fantasy 7 on the N64!!! "

Jesus thats just ignorant, what about the D-pad? shoulder buttons? Or the analog sticks? Or the Rumble?
Just because you multiply them by 2 doesnt mean its innovation.

" If Nintendo is the "innovator" that means there was no need for them to go to Sony in the 1rst place"
Sony delivered HARDWARE.
The idea could have still been from Nintendo's side.
(KEYWORD: COULD)

"ot because of the graphics or the processor, it was the games"

Yeah cause Sony made all those games !!!
/S

" There was no system before the PS2 where u could watch DVD movies, most of the DVD sucess is due to the PS2, use the DVD format to make bigger games besides the blue disc format. And to prove that adults can also play videogames, I'm tired of jumping on turtles!!!! "

Sorry but "bigger" my @ss, Most games only take up to 5~10 hours to finish. The 360 does the same thing and its not even using Blu-ray.
And your "adults" comment was just retarded.

If it's up to Nintendo we all still playing MArio bros/Pokemon, 24/7 a year, oh wait ... some still do.

There is no denying MS with great vision stepped up the console game, releasing Live and pushing the multiplayer online interactions, while Nintendo released its motion controller.

However in terms of content Sony's vision of gaming brought maturity to a kids hobby. The CD/DVD/BD inclusion in PS1/PS2/PS3 was needed in order to make games longer and more ambitious.

Sony is at the forefront of gameplay innovations/mature content that has made gaming mainstream and appealing for young adults/adults.

Not by chance Heavy Rain is exclusive to the PS3.

AWBrawler2800d ago

Saturn was competing with the N64 and PS1. Dreamcast was the first sixth gen sonsole it competed with the PS2 and Gamecube, but died midway.

Tito082794d ago (Edited 2794d ago )

I don't care if you don't like my comments, but that's mostly true, so you're the ignorant, defending a Childish-like company like Nintendo, even Sega were more innovative than Nintendo( sega brought the CD idea first)... DVD was last gen so Sony knew it was great for games, this gen they went to bluray which is good for games.... Nintendo went to phillips for the CD technology, but nothing happened, they still went for the cartridge, Nintendo makes stupid little ideas, so every little thing is WOW or OMG to you, get over it dude, d-pad WOW, 2 shoulder buttoms WOW analog stick WOW, Sony made those things better, accept it, why the hell you think PS2 used 2 formats for, DVD was for the bigger games, blue disc was the standard PS2 disc!!!!

@ raztad

I agree with you on every single thing u said!!!!

also the deal fell cuz sony would have the rights to the games if they are made on cd. also sony would get most of the money too i believe. so does it really matter now.

AntoineDcoolette2801d ago

Yeah Sony wanted 100% control of the software since it was their format. So Nintendo was like "**** this."

PirateThom2800d ago

Then, suddenly, three Zelda CD-i games and Hotel Mario.

fatstarr2800d ago

also speculated why the Wii doesn't have DVD support for movies is because of Sony. they wanted to get back at Nintendo so they blocked formats that they owned.

ie Gc used Mini DVD i think
Wii uses DVDs for data but does not play movies

home brew proved it has the capacity to play DVDs. so that is ruled out to why the Wii does not play DVDs.

ChickeyCantor2800d ago (Edited 2800d ago )

@fat,

I think its because the license for DVD playback would put an additional cost on top of the price.

Sony and Nintendo might be competitors, but "dvd" playback is in no way something they are fighting for this gen.
Bizz is still bizz, and if you look at how much Wii has sold, why wouldn't sony wanna profit from it?

And thanks to that, Sony is always innovating Technology.

Japanese Technology is the best. The American tech, Im not sure.

N4BmpS2801d ago

Yeah if you are a real Sony/PS Fan you should already know this. I could only think if the PLAYSTATION and Nintendo console were joined together now, I think it would be unstoppable? maybe?
