This fan submission article discusses the reasons why the popular Legend of Zelda series will not gain respect with hardcore gamers. Points include Nintendo's laziness, repetitive gameplay, and more.
call me crazy but i could have sworn the zelda series was a very liked and respected series
Lies! The Zelda series was always respected!
If the article is anything like the title, then this whole thing is bullshit. The Legenda of Zelda series is about as hardcore as you can get when it comes to gaming. It has a very large following in many parts of the world amongst people of all ages, races, creeds, and social statuses. If these imbeciles define hardcore games by the amount of profanity and blood that they contain, then I reiterate that they are idiots. Hardcore is fast becoming a meaningless term. It means nothing to me anymore. Literally, nothing. It provides to me no example or idea of what it means. Is Poke'mon hardcore or not? Is Mario hardcore or not? I don't know anymore. The only time I understand the term "hardcore" is when its being used to describe pornography. And even then, it's not always clear.
WHAT? LMAO. I'm a hardcore gamer and I have great respect for Zelda. Even after so many years, it's never disappointed. In fact, Zelda Wii is up there with GOWIII and Halo Reach on my list. I know a lot of people grew with Zelda and we'll always continue to enjoy it and respect it. Ocarina of Time is, imo, one of the, if not THE greatest game ever made.
But Zelda is one of the only remaining Nintendo Franchises I still have absolute respect for.
I've never really gotten into Zelda, but I respect that a lot of people like it.
I have no respect for Nintendo because it's not HD.
...but this article is correct. You are a casual gamer if you like Zelda. I tried playing this kiddie series at my friends house and I literally turned into a 5 year old in the process. First of all, lets get to the graphics, they weren't even in HD. What kind of garbage is that? HD stands for Hardcore Definition. If I'm not playing on my Dad's 50" plasma in 1080p then I'm just playing casual, like on a DS or PSP or something (lame kindergartener stuff). But that doesn't matter when there's no online multiplayer. Seriously, what is this, 2003? As far as I'm concerned video games didn't start until Xbox Live invented online play. There's only one true test of skill and that's capturing a flag with a 3:1 kill/death ratio. Nobody plays sports for fun, so why would anyone play video games for fun? Exactly. Since I got fired from my job of waterboy on my Junior High's football team, video games are all I have left. Oh, what's that letter at the bottom of the package? I don't recognize it. That's right, no M rating, no purchase. Maybe you casual gamers can play something inoffensive like Zelda, but I'll stick to my mature games for mature people such as myself. So yeah, this article is right on the money. I'll stick to Halo 3 and Modern Warfare 2 -- the reason video games were invented. You casual gamers make me sick. Now if you'll excuse me, my Mom is yelling at me because I forgot to take out the trash last night.
Then you started gaming this gen? Oh please, go back to your sports in HD and leave gaming alone.
Zelda is and always will be respected unless Nintendo does something crazy with it. I am not clicking this article, but hopefully it's just a satire. If not, whoever wrote it is retarded.
Is this article for real?
Couldn't agree more, I know me and a couple of other of my friends that might be considered hardcore gamers respect Zelda. Heck, the original Zelda for NES is one of my favorite (and I think most revolutionary games) of all time.
i pray that you are joking seriously? if your not joking or being sarcastic then ok you have earned my biggest idiot of the day award
are always about QUALITY, so that is why I play some of these old Nintendo Franchises.
Still my favorite franchise to this day, and I would consider myself a hardcore gamer. Some Zelda games are masterpieces, just like I would consider Super Mario World, Mario 64, or Metroid amazing games as well.
Sarcasm? If so --------> Great comment! Honestly, few times have I seen clever humor such as this displayed on n4g. If not --------> ................ *silence*
lol, Paranoid Monkey, if you can prove that the "kiddies" can easily beat the complex and innovative puzzles in Zelda games, then I will believe you.
It's based on a false assumption. The original Zelda was what I grew up playing and I will always love the series. Clearly hardcore gamers do respect it, just look at the comments.
originally debuted in the 80's it helped (along with games like Contra and Metroid and Ninja Gaiden) define what hardcore meant for console gaming. This "article" sounds like a PMSing nerd who's never liked Zelda and got pissy when he heard a sequel was in the works again as everyone around him got excited. Loser.
Haha, that was hilarious. I'm hoping most people got your sarcasm. Here, take these bubbles. Its contents will help you on your way.
Anyone who couldn't sense paranoidmonkey's blatant sarcasm needs to pick themselves up a sense of humor. I mean really, c'mon with the disagrees and the "you'd better not be serious" comments, it was inyourface sarcasm. I got a chuckle out of it at least...
If I were a girl...no wait if you were a girl....no wait todays rose goes to ye (^_^)
I'm still pissed off about Zelda! Do you remember when the gamecube was out, they came out with some screenshots of how the next Zelda game could/would look. And then they came out with Wind Waker!
A bubble for you Paranoid Monkey. Well said
Not "hardcore" lol what a joke of an article. People that use the term "hardcore" to describe themselves as people that only play FPS, and that every game needs to be online just annoy me. Phantom hour glass, wind waker and spirit tracks are awesome games (with the cell shaded "toony" look)...maybe they were too hard for him or something.
"have no respect for Nintendo because it's not HD." Anyone that says a game is not a game that is not in HD is an absolute tool, you must not have played games prior to the last gen because up until then it was all SD. Anything with the phrase "hardcore" in it doesnt mean a single thing to me. Try and beat the original zelda to see how "hardcore" you really are. Unless your being sarcastic
End of discussion. :)
I'm a hardcore gamer that is in LOVE with the zelda series. I respect the series with passion because ocarina of time was the first game that got me into gaming. No homo
-_- Geez, is this guy serious? And he was saying the Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks games' graphics were subpar?! They're freaking DS games. They're not supposed to have advanced graphics, and I think they look fantastic for DS games.
Someone is on crack. When did this guy started to play videogames? Zelda is a loved and respected franchise by hardcore gamers. If you don't like it you're not hardcore. I'm pretty sure the next Zelda game is one, if not the most anticipated game for the Wii.
None of these "Gamers" that started with the Xbox Generation know what a real gamer is. All this new gen of gamers wants is shooters cause Halo made every 6-16 year old kid in the country WORSHIP the title. (cause of the extreme ad campaigns and hype they created) Gaming was different back in the day, and I loved seeing it evolve from Atari and NES to what we have now. I respect them and will always love the series, but I fear they'll never recapture the feelings I used to get when playing Link to the Past...just like an RPG will never recatpure the feelings I had for Xenogears, Chrono trigger and FFVII.
what? (Just reading the headline.)
Try not to look into it too much, it can make your head explode! Someone looking for hits methinks!
Honesty from the fallout fanboys for once. Good, because most "hardcore" gamers need stories in videogames (lol) for it to interest them. That only tells me Zelda games aren't becaming movies any time soon. 7_7
Hardcore gamer that respects Zelda <
dont want to give them the hit. unless its a joke article not going to touch it. also, zelda is one of the few franchises where fanboys from every walk will agree on its awesomeness
it's the hardcore that love and respect zelda for what it is.
Zelda was pretty much my first game i ever played next to super mario world and super metroid so yeah i respect it as a hardcore gamer.
I'm a hardcore gamer, and Zelda is a franchise I grew with, and have nothing but respect for. And not only by me, but gamers everywhere, no matter our preferences.
My XBL friends will race to the store to buy a Wii when the new Zelda drops...
I wouldn't sign my name on that article, either. What an idiot. "HURRR NOBODY WILL RESPECT ZELDAR UNTIL ITS A FPS GAME AND ITS ON XBAWKS LOLZ!!!!1"
Lmao, that gave me a giggle. Bubbles+ for "Zeldar"
LOOOL "XBAWKS" XDDD!!!!!!!!!!
Take a bubble ZELDAR!
i'm a hardcore gamer, i respect zelda = stupid article.
He must be found and shot immediately! Paintball to the nads at least twice.
And maybe 5 others that started their gaming career 3 years ago. He certainly doesn't speak for this gamer. OoT still kills me and I'm chomping at the bit for the new one.
Regardless of how "kiddy" many people think zelda is, its core design, gameplay and the overall effort and passion put in to each of the games shines brighter than many sub par games with sequels that are designed simply to extort suckers for money. Zelda's aren't churned out like loose change, they are refined and carefully developed. If certain people can't see that, i honestly think they didn't actually play any of them. Although fair enough if you just don't like the gameplay or style, that can get to a few people. Zelda's have been around since 1987... most hardcore gamers and developers grew up with Zelda. Before games were mainstream, Zelda was as hardcore as you can get! Zelda not hardcore? I think not!
games in the first place. i've been gaming since the NES launched in 1985, and i consider myself a pretty hardcore gamer. i still love the Zelda series to this day. what kind of unfounded article is this? man, does no one even bother to do research before posting articles these days?
I'm a hardcore gamer. Love Zelda. Even loved Wind Waker.
YAY a companion!
If you are so hardcore that you can't enjoy a good Zelda game, then you have officialy become one of those jaded, can't be pleased gamers who spends more time crying and complaining about things on the internet then actually playing the game. Not every game needs mature content, ninja gaiden difficulty or waves upon waves of enemys with AI that could melt your face off. Zelda's strengths are in its great art/character design, solid story and solid dungeoning. I don't think anyone denies that its starting to get a little stale, but to say that hardcore gamers can't enjoy it is laughable. Playing a good Zelda game is an experience that is completely unique in the gaming world.
um there hasnt been a real new release of zelda on the wii.... only a remake: twilight princess. Which is 3 on my best wii game list behind SSBB , and Metroid 3
The bs aside, the article raises some valid points, zelda is getting a bit dated, link still doesn't talk in the game. The gameplay is basically the same as past zelda's and for better or worse the zelda series seems to be stuck in the early 90's on certain things. I'll take zelda 3 over tp any day, since the game is called zelda, why not make her the main character for once in the series, or swap back in forth between each of them in a light and dark world/past and present.
Since when isn't Zelda respected by hardcore gamers...
Havent read the article, but the title just makes no sense...
ocarina of time is widely regarded as one of the best games ever. and you don't get much more hardcore than that bloody water temple.
i think that zelda is by far one of the strongest titles in nintendo.....hell i grew up on it as most REAL gamers have. i freakin love zelda who cares if its not in hd it started the first in game save funtion but i would like to see link talk or a story where zelda is the hero. but the thing i gotta bang on the article is the fact this junk is posted by a cat named legendzelda for a site called legendzelda.net all im say'n this article had to be for hits cuz zelda will always have respect in the gameing world
I always thought of it as vice-versa to gamers as a whole compared to what the article is saying...
I kind of agree with some points in the article, but since when weren't the games respected? Nintendo does needs to do something different with their Zelda games, though. They seem to be making them more for the casual players. Some things Nintendo needs to take note of: - Almost all of enemies you don't even have to bother killing, you can just run right by them every single time - The combat itself is pretty average and there isn't any sort of challenge when up against enemies - The story is basically the same in all of them - The way the game plays out is pretty much always the same - Puzzles are too simple, and can't even be considered as puzzles - Bosses are always a breeze, and it's always way too obvious what you have to do - There's no epic feeling to the game - The world feels kind of empty in TP - The whole transforming into a wolf thing in TP was completely stupid They could do so much better with the Zelda franchise. To me it doesn't really seem like they're trying very hard. The games could be so much more fun to play also, but sadly they have to make them easy so everyone will buy them.. I enjoyed all of the Zelda games, and loved Wind Waker, but I'm not hyped for the next game at all. If it's just going to be the exact same thing again then I'm not too sure if I'm going to buy it. I'm hoping Nintendo makes some great changes with the next one.
- Puzzles are too simple, and can't even be considered as puzzles Have you actually played through a Zelda game before? I played Ocarina just before attending University and the Water temple section still stands out for me. It was mind bendingly frustating but brilliant. What I've always enjoyed about Zelda and other good Nintendo games (galaxy, m64 and Super Metroid) is that everything is so finely balanced. The games are so much greater than the sum of their parts. You want challenge then play Majoras mask. I believe you can download it onto a Wii. If you think any puzzle in that isn't challenging enough to even be considered one then respect. You are an incredible genius, probably a Chess grand master with a 190+ IQ. I've debated this with friends and we are of the common oppinion that people who see Zelda (or Mario for that matter) as 'kiddy' or not 'hardcore' are juvenile enough to think that only a mature game would have bloodshed or nudity and not be grown up enough to see past that and enjoy it for what it is... a game. Nintendo make some of the finest. The author of this article is most likely just that.
The Water Temple in Ocarina is widely considered the low point of gaming in general. The rest of the game? Instant classic. Water temple? Horrid.
If you don't respect Zelda, and haven't been diagnosed with any mental illness, then you're a retard.
And I respect it.. No, no, no! I LOVE IT! Quit your fanboy talk, fool!
You can't get more hardcore than Zelda developers idolize it and so do gamers.
If Zelda isn't respected, nothing is :) Seems like someone wanted to boost his reader-statistics...
Zelda is a hard core gamers game... a hard core gamer is not someone who plays Gow GOW Halo COD, NO! that would be a commercial gamer!! A hardcore gamer is soemone who can appreciate a game that are more story/art based, real masterpeices that do not need to follow the more blood/weapon/onlineplayers formula. a game you can think is great without needing to know why ^_^ Zelda is one of the most hard core gamers out there it takes a real gamer to appreciat it... that's the real definition of "hardcore"!!
im a hardcore gamer, i love zelda, its a classic franchise just like Mario. hope they anounce a new one at e3 and if you think Wiis are hard to get now well just wait, i still cant find a wii, got the money but there out of stock everywhere were i live i really wanted to get one theres some good games i want to play new super mario bros was the deciding factor for me, i started with the NES first game super mario bros and duck hunt(with the gun) lol,i beat that game too the last lvl is a b!t%h ,when will teh coopa king learn too not to have bridges that come out from under him.my favorite Zelda was Zelda Ocarina of Time!! that game was fun but sadly the last zelda game i played.
