Church of England describes videogames as "a sewer of gratuitously violent and sexual pornography".

AllAboutTheGames writes:

A representative from the Church of England in Oxfordshire has come out in attack of videogames following plans to overhaul the laws governing their sale in the UK.

Thomas Benyon, a member of the General Synod in Oxfordshire claims that:

"There is a bubbling sewer of gratuitously violent and sexual pornography and DVD games all around us,

"Family breakdown and resulting chaos means more and more children are without parental control and because they have computers and monitors in their rooms, they are able to access violent material in secrecy."

Parapraxis3078d ago

Too much violence = bad
Too much violence in religion = A O.K.?

Too much sex = bad
Realistic views on sex = bad
A perverse glorified lack of sex (fear of it) = religion.. A O.K.?

Ignorant hypocrites, the lot.

I will raise my own kids thank you. I will decide what I think they can or cannot play. IMO religion should be treated just like any adult material. Childrens minds are to inexperienced to understand the complexities of the various dogmatic monotheistic religions of the world all with an IMO dangerous their way or its wrong mentality.

With proper guidance and supervision, kids can be exposed to many different ideas and media and still be good kids.

I tell my 2 boys that the only violence dad does not like is REAL violence, FAKE violence is fine and dandy. I tell them over and over that it is not real and that you can do things in games that you should never do in real life. It is like an outlet to them to experience things that would be evil, dangerous, destructive etc without actually having them experience these things for real.

I am a pacifist, yet I love the GOW gory style games or the adult themed games like HR.

The Church knows it is becoming irrelevant so they are grasping at any "enemy" they can to slow the flood of awakenings taking place all over western europe and many other parts of planet Earth that you DON'T need religion to be a good, caring, happy human being.

So once again Church or any other group that wants to tell me how to raise my children....stay the frack out of my mind and my being.

UnSelf3078d ago

dis why sony treat the uk like dey do now

RememberThe3573078d ago

Please, I am a religious man myself, don't lump all of us into the sack of ignorant pestering that is the Church of England.

FragGen3078d ago

The church always makes everything sound so much more awesome than it really is...

blind-reaper3078d ago

and that is why we love them so much!!!

Bathyj3078d ago

I'm no history buff.

Does anyone here know if The Church of England has ever committed any violence?

Any? Anything at all?

Guitarded3078d ago

Where most organized religion goes wrong is they forget that "we fight not against flesh and blood, but against powers and principalities and rulers in high(spiritual) places." Fact is most people who love God forget this many times and attack the flesh and blood that we can see in front of us. Myself included. I love all people and hate all sin. Including my own, but I realize that my fight is not with the deceived but with the deceiver. Almost everything in this world, including games, has been twisted by satan for one purpose. To distract us from the truth. So the church has the right idea, but is going about it the wrong way.

table3077d ago (Edited 3077d ago )

Genesis 19:6-8
Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him and said, "No, my
friends. Don't do this wicked thing. Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don't do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof."

Numbers 31:17-18
Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

Deuteronomy 22:28-29
If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver.

Isaiah 13:15-18
Anyone who is captured will be run through with a sword. Their little children will be dashed to death right before their eyes. Their homes will be sacked and their wives raped by the attacking hordes. For I will stir up the Medes against Babylon, and no amount of silver or gold will buy them off. The attacking armies will shoot down the young people with arrows. They will have no mercy on helpless babies and will show no compassion for the children.

Very rich words coming from the church of England.

Darkstorn3077d ago

The Church is also arguing against evolution and climate change. The Church of England wants attention - and the best way to counter that is to ignore them.

Damn only like 3 posts and the atheist teens already came in, lmao.

-Alpha3078d ago

The irony is full of win.

Lucreto3078d ago

Actually I am in my twenties and if you read the bible I am not far off. This coming from a church that was founded on a King who wanted to bed his mistress.

doG_beLIEfs3078d ago (Edited 3078d ago )

Actually READ the bible and show me a book, video game, movie, tv show, play, whatever with more

did I mention contradictions?

than the bible.

I could go on and on.

For every cherry picked quote of the bible that you hear in church about love I can show you FIVE that deal in one of the above old or NEW testament.

Guitarded3078d ago

There is a purpose for those stories in the bible. To show us why we need Jesus. Games, TV, movies, books do it for pure entertainment value. God will show you the truth IF and only IF you really want to know it. Most people won't bother because it will interfere with the way they choose to live their life.

JBaby3433077d ago

The Bible showing all those terrible things about mankind only reinforces its message that we need Christ so I'm not sure what you are trying to prove.

saint_john_paul_ii3078d ago (Edited 3078d ago )

this is why church and state cant go together children. we would have a medieval era type of government.

take for example my church back in the Day when we thought the world was flat, LOLOLOL.

other than that, it was pretty cool having a shoot out in church in Resistance 1 LOLOLOLOL

TheFlyingPenguin3078d ago

In R:FOM that was a cathedral not a church lol

-Alpha3078d ago

wasn't it the church of England itself?

kaveti66163078d ago

Haha, much respect, but you got something wrong there.

Nobody in that era actually believed the world was flat. Most people knew, since the time of the Ancient Greeks, that the world was spherical in shape. The idea that people in the Medieval times believed the world was flat has been purported for centuries as a way of describing the ignorance of that era. Ironically, there is a group of people today who do believe the Earth is flat.

Bathyj3078d ago

The Earths not flat?

It looks flat from here.

Not a geography buff either.

Now I see why I like gaming so much!

...could never pinpoint the reason,
Thanks Church of England!

Candlestickmaker3078d ago

I think this guy should try reading the Bible before he criticises games for having violent and sexual content.

cyguration3078d ago

is did you read it first?

Darkstorn3077d ago

The Bible speaks of 'dashing babies on rocks.' I haven't seen a video game do that yet (in due time, though...) :P
