PSN base tops 40m as XBL users rise

Microsoft say that the Live community has grown to 23 million – both Gold and Silver users – marking a high rate of Live adoption from the 39 million 360 consoles sold worldwide.

Sony, meanwhile, says that it has clocked over 40 million PSN accounts, coming from a mixture of 33.5 million PS3 owners and 56 million PSP units sold. (PS3, Xbox 360)

I wish MS would split the Silver and Gold, just to see how many people are paying customers. Just out of curiosity =)

They would never do that as they never want people to know the percentage of users who use gold as its probably smaller than you think. If they make out its very high believe it or not your more likely to sign up to gold yourself as you think there is more people to play games against. If in reality you find only a small percentage of users are playing online you might be reluctant to pay to play against a few users on your fave game because its old. So basically new games will always have lots of players but old games won't and the smaller the user base the less people there will be playing them games.

Think of a parent with 3 kids.
one console, with separate accounts for the parent and each kid:

PSN accounts: 4 x 0 = $0
XBL accounts: 4 x 50 = $200 a year

You can see why PSN has more accounts than PS3s.

lol
the main thing i use my ps3 for is reading forums about upset ps3 owners its becoming an addiction on its own,ha i may even play it one of these days.i love how people get so passionate i own both consoles and do prefer 360,but its so fun reading the fights and bickering, like you have to pay for live or ps3 can do great textures but not straight lines.
