PS3 inventory is 'tight', may be the cause of low sales

Nick @ PS3Center writes:

Since the launch of the 120GB PS3 in September, consumer demand for the PlayStation 3 has been through the roof. Driven by the lowered price and the new Kevin Butler-led marketing campaign, PS3 sales have skyrocketed over the course of the past five months.

Interest is so high that apparently Sony is having trouble keeping the PS3 stoked at retail.

The Ps3 is obviously the best choice. I think people are still blinded by MS' hype campaign.

These excuses are becoming classics with Sony and the company's fanboys. Blame past demand, blame new SKUs lol

butterfinger2748d ago

we won out of the Open Zone? Back in your play pen, kiddo.

KillaManiac2748d ago

All I know is that my Gamestop in Arkansas has been without PS3s for couple weeks now and don't know when we are getting more in.

Number is too high (over 50+) i've had to tell in person (not including phone) that we don't have PS3s.

Finally today we got a whole TWO 250g ps3s, but they are 400$ and not many want a higher price tag when a 300$ one is possible.

sparta762748d ago

Why are there sooo many fanboys from the other side here!?
Sony said there was gonna be shortages. Look at amazon they where out of stock till a few days ago. Now is #5!
so much fear from xbox fanboys.
Also I guess it depends where too..
Best buy at long island city was sold out, but bestbuy at union sq in the city had two left.
Promised my nice I would get her one for her birthday. Also the gamestop in long island city was out too., only have used..

Every week me and a friend go by Walmart for the usual provisions, and each time we make a trip through the electronics department. Time and time again for the past few weeks there is never any Wiis or PS3s but lots of 360s... except for yesterday when there was 2 PS3s available. How long those two consoles lasted I don't know, but I doubt they saw the light of day on that shelf (it was around 10pm this past Wednesday).

Yep,
I truly think the only thing limiting the sale of PS3s is the supply.

Cueil2747d ago

360 and PS3 shipments were nearly the same... both systems sold 90 plus precent of their stock... also Wii shipments were down to... wierd...

SL1M DADDY2747d ago

Thanks for your insider confirmation...

/sarcasm

As for the news, it's good to see Sony having trouble keeping up with production. Means sales are better than they expect. Kudos.

You know, there is some truth to this because 3 walmarts in my city and 2 targets are sold out of Ps3's as we speak. My brother went to buy one last week and couldn't find one. He was gonna buy a used one at Gamestop but I advised against it... Later that day a shipment came in and he was able to get one from Gamestop.

gauntletpython2748d ago

Same here, a friend of mine that works at Best Buy was saying that they were having trouble keeping them in stock. Not like the 2007 Wii level of demand, but definitely some supply issues.

nogolis2748d ago

How are people gonna disagree with this story? Even if it were made up, you really wouldn't know for sure. How stupid are some people?

IdleLeeSiuLung2748d ago

I don't believe it for one bit. I never heard of any shortages until the NPD numbers came out.

If there were shortages, it should happen over Christmas not in January. Besides, Sony should be able to anticipate it based on their sales target this year and the fact that it sold more or less on par with the 360 in December. Furthermore, the 360 outsold the PS3 in November.

Every freaken online retailer I have seen have it in stock in the past 4 months. So were is the shortage?

"PlayStation 3 120 GB purchase limit policy
As you may know, the PlayStation 3 120 GB is in great demand. In an effort to provide as many customers as possible with the opportunity to purchase PlayStation 3 120 GB, we are limiting the total number of PlayStation 3 120 GB units that can be purchased. As a result, each household may only purchase one PlayStation 3 120 GB unit. See additional policy details"

their is your shortage

butterfinger2748d ago

The 120GB PS3 has been on backorder on GameStop's website for a long time now. It sounds like you aren't really aware of what is actually going on. I personally had a hard time finding the 120GB slim last Friday in my area when I went to finally pick one up (the slim I mean, of course). I called 4 Wal-Marts, 3 Targets, 8 GameStops, and 3 Best Buys in my area and out of all them, one Target had 2 left. One of the GameStops had the 250GB, but I already had a 320GB HDD ready to go into the new one, so I didn't care to spend the $50 extra. Also, all of the GameStops had used 40GB models, and one had a 160GB Uncharted 2 bundle brand new for $399.99 still (lol). I was wondering when Sony would mention this problem, and I suppose NPD was the perfect reason for them to do so.

Giant_Chibi2748d ago (Edited 2748d ago )

During christmas sony sent out a large shipment of consoles to ensure that there were no shortages during the holidays.

That may very well be the reason why you didn't see the shortages during holidays.

I don't know how production works, but i'm assuming that sony was waiting to ramp up the manufacturing as soon as the current stock of consoles ran low.

It's like selling 5 cans of soda, 2 of them are purchased over the course of a week. You can restock by buying 5 more cans or you can wait until the next 2 cans sell, leaving you with 1 can.

If you decided to buy the 5 extra cans ( ps3's ), you run the risk of not selling them and not making enough money to replenish other items like bread ( accessories or game development ). But if you manage your budget sparingly, and stuck with the 3 cans, the next 2 cans might last you another week. There's no need to waste money on restocking until it's necessary.

Therefore by that logic, sony overstocked during the holidays, leaving them with enough consoles at retail to last them through january until there was shortage.

I'm also pretty sure that they make a huge shipment of consoles to save money by buying in bulk. And once most of the shipped consoles are sold, they buy in bulk again to save costs, rather than doing an immediate restock.

It would just be illogical for sony to constantly keep supplying consoles daily since the demand can shift erratically. They have to keep tabs on manufacturing supplies, their budget, weekly sales, what games will be coming out, what the competitors will be doing, etc.

exnihilonihilfit2748d ago

I have a friend who's waiting to get one because his madre as getting him one for christmas but the site she shops on was sold out at the time and they still don't have enough in stock.

beardpapa2748d ago

There's only like 2-3 PS3 slim boxes at my local Fry's. Usually there's a bunch but when I went there last week for some cables that was something I noticed immediately. I figured they put them in the back or whatever but I guess they were in low stock.

There's plenty of them at walmart in my town.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site...

Homicide2748d ago

Same. See a bunch of PS3s at Wal-mart, Best Buy and Target.

krouse932748d ago (Edited 2748d ago )

Just checked my town and I have the old 40GB SKU it's got a 320HD now but they only have the 250GB ones in stock at the Best Buy near me, all the 120GB ones are out ones in stock. And the Link you gave is Best Buy not Walmart...

StanLee2748d ago

Come on man, you know the deal; the XBox 360 outsells the PS3 in January and all of a sudden there were shortages. It's pure BS. Not one retailer reports shortages during the month of January or during the holidays.

Cueil2747d ago

We just go 6 PS3 120s and 6 360s... sold 2 PS3s and 3 360s

Nathan Drake22748d ago

on amazon ATM

ps3(120GB)-#5
wii-#7
ps3 (250GB)-#37
x360-#45

saint_john_paul_ii2748d ago

well it makes sense. People were expecting PS3 to be above the 360 during this Months NPD.

saint_john_paul_ii2748d ago

why disagree, it makes a valid theory.

Cueil2747d ago

both systems sold out of their stock... there were some problems across the board for all three systems
