Top 10 best RPGs of this generation so far

VGArabia: My favorite genre is definitely RPG. I enjoy playing them immensely and have a passion for them. No matter if they are Western or Japanese, I always have time to play them. There were a lot of great RPGs that had been released this generation. Some of them were great, some were good and some were bad. It wasn't an easy task for me to make a list of the best 10 RPGs of this generation, but there you have it.

Daring choice for #1. Although I like Mass Effect 2 a little bit more, I agree with his reasons. Gotta love Bioware.

starchild3080d ago

Mass Effect 2 is the best western RPG that I have played and Lost Odyssey is the best Japanese RPG I have played (followed closely by Demon's Souls).

Blaze9293080d ago

I honestly didn't even know there were 10 RPGs total this gen. That's a statement.

Tony P3080d ago

Personally, I still think of Oblivion as the apex of the RPG experience this gen. With or without mods. But especially with mods. I'm sure a lot of people go with FO3, but to me it's still Oblivion w/guns. Which is awesome. But Oblivion was there first setting that bar pretty damn high.

Mass Effect is definitely my favourite new RPG franchise this gen with The Witcher in second.

Bigpappy3080d ago

I will just say to those who think the game was hurt by simplifying the inventory: This game is a better game than the first by a mile. The choices and RPG elements focused more on the dialog. Baby sitting your inventory and equipment is fun in slow games like Fallout. ME2 tried to speed up the game and have players focus on dialog. The fact is this has worked very well and as a result the game is selling like hot cakes. It is a very fun game to play. I am happy that there are developers out there that are willing to mix things up rather than the same shyt 20 years. Thanks Bioware! Thanks Bethesda!

mass effect does rock my world but i have never enjoyed a game more than i have demons souls.

Digitaldude3080d ago

Lol being number 1 ain't saying much from the quality of RPGs this gen.
Number 1 belongs to Demons Souls.

GameGambits3080d ago

Dojima-san laughs at you all, because Persona 4 dwarfs ALL rpgs this generation thus far in its shadow. Persona 4 = the best this gen, and if you don't want to count a PS2 game, then it's a tie between Demon's Souls and FF13 for me.

Darkstorn3080d ago (Edited 3080d ago )

They forgot The Witcher. I'd have that at 3rd behind Dragon Age and ME2. I haven't had a chance to play Demon's Souls, though.

zagibu3080d ago

@Tony P: Both Oblivion and Fallout 3 lack something central to a good RPG: story. Open Worlds are cool and all, but if all you can do there is kill 500 ogres or shoot 700 super mutants, the game doesn't classify as RPG according to my terms.

Tony P3080d ago

@zag: Right. Obviously, I wouldn't agree.

Because frankly, what you classify as a RPG doesn't mean a thing to the genre or myself.

caseh3080d ago

Why do peopple keep classifying this game as an RPG/JRPG???

Its turn-based strategy, plain and simple. Linear path from start to finish, battles are taken in turns. Is it really that hard to define?

The fact that you can level up classes doesn't make it a role-playing game, if thats the case then Infamous must be an RPG also as you can enhance skiils. Initial D the driving game must also be an RPG as you can upgrade cars.

Take a look at X-COM and Jagged Alliance on the PC, both classed as turn-based strategy and with stupid levels of depth with regards to leveling up etc. Anime styled graphics DON'T make it an RPG... *rant over* :) Was a good game though no doubt about that. :D

ME1 > ME2 in terms of being an RPG. ME2 is amazing, but it would've been almost perfect if they didn't try to cater to the shooter fans when making it.

"ME2 tried to speed up the game and have players focus on dialog."

ME1 is way more focused on dialogue than ME2.

Raf1k13079d ago

I agree with Dragon Age as number one as it's amazing and better than ME2 in terms of it being a proper RPG.

I'm also glad Oblivion is in there too as it often gets overlooked/forgotten.

zagibu3079d ago

@ Tony P: Disagree with what? That story is essential for an RPG, or that Oblivion and Fallout 3 had lackluster stories?

raztad3079d ago

List is OK but Demons Souls owns both Oblivion IV and Dragon Age IMO.

Tony P3079d ago

@zag: You make it sound like they didn't attempt a story at all. They did. But Bethesda's RPGs are not designed to restrict you to elements of the main story. They design it to give you as much freedom as possible.

If you don't like that, whatever. But they are RPGs even if you think they aren't.

zagibu3078d ago

@Tony P: You are dodging my questions. But you seem still convinced that Oblivion and Fallout 3 are great RPGs, so you must either think a good story is not essential for a great RPG, or that they did indeed have good storytelling. You would be wrong in both cases.

Lost Odyssey is the best JRPG in my opinion.

Lavalamp3080d ago

Tales of Vesperia, thou art beautiful my love.

Redempteur3080d ago

tales of vesperia too ..because i can't help to enjoy "tales of" games. i need to chain skill and combo up to more than a hundred ..

Priceless i tell you ...

SaiyanFury3080d ago (Edited 3080d ago )

I love Demon's Souls and Valkyria Chronicles, but I'm still waiting for a true traditional JRPG experience this gen. So far, Tales of Vesperia on the 360 looks to be the best. I've never tried it on 360 as I'm waiting for the PS3 version, just as I'm picking up Star Ocean 4 later today for my PS3. I'll reserve personal judgement until I get a chance to play through both. I know a lot of people didn't like SO3 on the PS2, but it's one of my fave games on the system. Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but I classify western RPGs different than their eastern cousins because they're often a different experience.

On a separate note, I don't count Oblivion as a current gen game because I finished it on my PC 3 years ago. It was, and is great. It plays very well on consoles. Fallout 3 is my most recent WRPG, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Tony P3079d ago

"On a separate note, I don't count Oblivion as a current gen game because I finished it on my PC 3 years ago."

What does that matter to the generational cycle? Oblivion came out a year into this gen for PC and 360. Three years ago is still current gen.

Sackdude3080d ago (Edited 3080d ago )

LOL @ MassEffect 2, ME2(great game) but its not a real RPG (its missing a lot of RPG elements), i would put the original ME1 instead of 2.

My top are
.
.
.

1. Demon’s Souls (Masterpiece)
2. Valkyria Chronicles
3. Lost Odyssey
4. Dragon Age: Origins
5. Persona 4
6. Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core
7. Tales of Vesperia
8. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

immortal843080d ago

While your list is good, it's a bit lacking. where is Fallout 3? Also, I played each of Persona 3 and 4 for over 30 hours but I never returned to them because they bored me. Mass Effect 2 is a great TPS/RPG.

Umbrella Corp3080d ago

Add in Fallout 3 and White Knight Chronicles now its a list.

3080d ago
Eternally333080d ago

Is not a fuc!in rpg its a good franchise but not a rpg just because they copy some elements from other real rpg games.

starchild3080d ago

It might not have all the RPG elements that you think it should have, but who the hell are you to decide what is and isn't an RPG?

Besides, it has way too many elements that are found in RPGs and not in third person shooters, so whatever it is it certainly isn't anything like normal third person shooters. The experience you get playing Gears of War 2 and Mass Effect 2 are vastly different. They might both have shooting, but the overall focus is completely different.

The fact that I can mine planets for elements to use to upgrade my weapons and armor, earn points that I can use to improve the abilities of those in my party, choose who is in my party for any given mission, control the position and attacks of my party members in battle, and a whole slew of other RPG elements makes Mass Effect 2 an RPG without question. It is an action RPG, which means that it will be different than JRPGs, but it is an RPG nonetheless.

Dev8 ing3080d ago

MGS4 is the best RPG this generation bar none. What it isn't an RPG? Fvck you it aint. Did you see the cut scenes? The flying ship was kinda a town, moreso than anything FFXIII has. It has upgradable armour. And everyone knows you don't have stats because Solid Snake's stats have been maxed out. Think of him as the Chuck Norris of RPG's. Not an RPG my ass.

PotNoodle3080d ago

RPG = Role Playing Game.

You play the role of commander shepard, you make his decisions, you build his personality, you build his combat style, you decisions as the character effect those around him.

If anything, Mass effect breaks away from the stupid formula that has kind of dominated the RPG genre for the last 10 years. It is about playing the role of character, just because many RPG's have implemented all these millions of skills, loot and other stuff into their games, does not mean that is what an RPG is about.

xabmol3080d ago (Edited 3080d ago )

WTF is an RPG?

Is Ratchet & Clank an RPG? Is Patapon, inFAMOUS, Borderlands, Okami, Jak & Daxter, GTA(Sanandreas), Viewtiful Joe, MAG, BFBC2, or Megaman Zero(GBA)??

When I think RPG I think FF, Crono, Dragon age, and other games like that. I really don't like RPG's, but I LOVED Demon's Souls. That right there raises a red flag IMO. I don't cosider it an RPG. It's an action gae ala DMC but you can level up. If leveling up is all it takes to be an RPG then MOST games are RPGs. If It's all about playing the role of that person, experiencing the journey, and making decisions, then is Heavy Rain an RPG?!

Ravage273080d ago (Edited 3080d ago )

DA:O is the best CLASSIC RPG, but it's mainly because the competition is pretty weak. Don't kill me, but i really hate Oblivon4.It's just feels so soul-less and i'm not a fan of its combat system (DS combat is better in every way imo)

I don't know what Demon's Souls is classified under (Action RPG?) but it is the best and most memorable RPG i've played since Kingdom Hearts 2.

Best SRPG - Valkyria Chr hands down, though the lack of competition gave it a helping hand (don't get me wrong VC is really really good)

Best shooter/rpg hybrid - i'm not into this sub genre but there are quite a few good ones like Fallout3,ME1(i haven't played ME2) and Borderlands with promising additions like AlphaProtocol and FO:Vegas. This is the best supported sub-genre by far, too bad i'm not a fan :/

Will try to play Lost Oddysey sometime in the future, as for now i'll wait for my copy of WKC to arrive before judging.

gamer20103080d ago

You know what some of you closed minded gamers remind me of? You remind me of the video game clerk in the Citadel that said:

"I wish they still made role playing games like they used to. These days it's all big choices and visceral combat. I miss those old games where you had to remember to drink water and it took 5 hours real time to fly somewhere"

Bioware was clearly poking fun at people that can't accept that role playing games continue to evolve.

Mass Effect 2 is an RPG. Get over it.

xabmol3079d ago

Now how bout an answer? What makes a RPG an RPG??

I love how this site works. People disagree with a question, lol?
