Sony Confirms Full PSP CPU Speed

A Sony Computer Entertainment representative has confirmed to Shacknews that developers can now take full advantage of the PSP's CPU following the late May release of the system's version 3.50 firmware. Rumors of the unlocking were initially reported by fansite PSP Updates via an unnamed source.

Previously, developers were only able to run the CPU at 266MHz rather than its full potential clock speed of 333MHz, though most games ran at only 222MHz. High Impact Games' Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, released in February, is said to run at 266MHz. Hackers long ago discovered methods to run the PSP's CPU at full speed, the benefits of which include a smoother framerate for certain games, at the cost of reduced battery life. There is no word yet if this update enables previous PSP releases to run at 333MHz, something hacked PSP firmware has enabled in the past...

SO people have been carrying around all this hardware and not able to use it?

Kyur4ThePain3598d ago

If i owned a psp i would still feel kinda gimped.

If you owned a PSP, I'm sure you would really enjoy it. I waited a long time to pick one up, and I'm very pleased with its capabilities.

I only got mine about a month ago.

Having a great time with Loco-Roco (Blush), SOCOM, HSG and a couple of demos, and of course being able to access all my media at home from anywhere while traveling is just the icing on the cake.

I was actually VERY surprised at how smooth SOCOM runs when playing online. I was really not expecting much, but damn, it's cool.

last i checked requires u to leave your pc AND ps3 on during your traveling. something i dont mind leaving pc on for but ps3? me thinks not

i own a psp, would never use that function. 95% of the vacation spots i go to don't have wifi so to me it's pointless

oh, for the record, psp isn't that great.

jack of all trades, master of none

Well Ready At Dawn said they wanted the whole clock speed for God Of War. So I hope to see GOW take advantage of that. This to me is great news and I for one can't wait to see what games will take using the whole clock speed to heart in the future.

Can't wait for some of these titles that use the full Processing Power :)

Vojkan3598d ago
