BioShock on Wii 'Not Out of the Sphere of Possibility'

Industrygamers: "In recent months, a number of video game publishers have publicly talked about pulling back Wii support, particularly when it comes to core or mature content. In fact, today a survey from Game Developer found that Wii development dropped from 42 percent last year to just 30 percent this year. Naturally, BioShock doesn't seem like the kind of property that would fit the Wii audience, given these trends, but in our recent in-depth interview with 2K Marin's Jordan Thomas we decided to ask him about making BioShock for Wii anyway. "

What? That's quite surprising to be honest. It's very, very unlikely to happe though.

i actually just clicked the story because i found the picture a little amusing

Bnet3433204d ago

BioShock: Reflex confirmed.

tunaks13204d ago

unlikely, but it would be good for anyone who doesnt have access to a gaming PC, PS360

Don't make it a rail shooter! Resident Evil, and Dead Space did this. We don't need more!

"Anything that's brought to the Wii tends to need to be purpose built, or fairly fundamentally re-architected. There are few games that use Unreal that made it across to the Wii. It doesn't mean that it's out of the sphere of possibility, but it's not something we considered for BioShock 2."

That's as close to a flat no as you can get without actually saying it. Move on...nothing to see here.

Yup, but compare it to the "Wii couldn't even run the menu" comment from Capcom. It's still not coming but it was a much nicer way of saying it.

"Anything that's brought to the Wii tends to need to be purpose built, or fairly fundamentally re-architected. There are few games that use Unreal that made it across to the Wii."

This right here reveals how devs think. The unreal engine isn't available on the wii. They bought the unreal engine in the first place to avoid that hassle and focus on content or limit costs. Why would they write an engine for a port when they bought one for the lead platform to avoid it? It's a matter of time, dedication and cost, not absolute ability.

Obviously you'd have to scale back graphics but when he's saying you have to re-architecture the game he means you need to completely rewrite or find another engine. A company that doesn't want to write their own engine for a game on a game's lead platform is obviously not gonna do it for ports.

The most interesting question is why Unreal Engine isn't on the wii. Despite Epic claiming the wii isn't powerful to run it, they ported unreal engine to a cellular phone with half the resolution and a fraction of the RAM, VRAM, and processor speed of the wii. The engine is apparently a memory hog anyways.

They don't wanna tweak it for the wii for the same reason other devs don't wanna rewrite their engines for it (not counting possible direct or indirect involvement by other console makers). It's boring. It doesn't let them implement the cool graphics and physics they want to see. The engine focuses on sustaining innovating in traditional video game values like simulation and graphics. The wii's promise is a new gameplay experience. If that doesn't interest developers personally it just feels like they're killing their child and removing everything personally interesting about their work.

Techies are awful with understanding general appeal. Who else do you know that thinks digital distribution is a good idea?

QFT.

And that, in a nutshell, is why UE isn't on Wii. It takes effort and it would require making the control scheme a priority over getting shiny graphics. Tech heads don't want to do that.

Well...most don't. There are a few that are willing to put in the work:

Look at how excited the RS2 devs are for their work on Wii. The one guy nearly jumps out of his seat to show off the control customization options. He's totally down with putting development resources mainly into programming a novel control scheme.

yes becuase all adult games have sold in the millions on Wii!

mrv3213204d ago

Resident Evil and Call of Duty says otherwise

Plus the top selling game of this generation is from a 40 year old franchise who's growth has been largely down to old school gamers.

Just because it isn't brown or red doesn't stop a game.from being good and vice versa.

Just make the game good and it'll sell. Plus these are EXTRA sales.

Do "all adult games" sell millions on the ps3 or xbox? As with the wii there's a lot of mediocre games that didn't sell on on either HD system. No one brings up sales of a game like Shadowrun as an example of how "adult" games sell on xbox. So why does a game like the Conduit or Madworld represent their sales on the wii?

3 CODs on wii broke a million along with RE4, HOTD 2 and 3 and RE: UC. None of these games had budgets or advertising comparable to a big adult game on HD systems. Three of them are ports that happened years after the release of the original.

If you look at the budget or quality of wii games there is no AAA third party "mature" title except MH Tri, yet to be released here but already selling 1mil+ in Japan. Look at the COD ports. Treyarch gets about 9 months to port COD:MW to wii two years after the original release. A treyarch dev admitted on NeoGaf they had *two* guys working on the COD 3 wii port. HOTD 2 and 3 is a port of a Dreamcast and xbox game. RE4 is a port of a gc game. Both had minor updates. RE: UC is a rail shooter designed by Capcom's admission to test the market, not push for millions of sales.

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. There are no AAA "adult" third party games on wii so you can't possibly infer they don't sell. Saying The Conduit or Madworld prove it is like saying Shadowrun proves there's no adult market on xbox. They were fun titles but in terms of investment and polish they're not comparable to the actual AAA quality games provided by Nintendo themselves.
