PS3 Technology Being Used For National Security

Believe it or not, technology on your Playstation 3 is being used to help develop new national security devices.

Researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are using the same technology used in the new Playstation 3 to develop new video tools for national security. (Industry, PS3)

is it really the PS3 or a very powerful version of the cell processor(maybe multiple cell proccessors) as a mainframe(like equaling a 100 ps3s or something in power)?

Of course CELL = Sony even though it was created by IBM, so anytime someone is using the cell chip they are automatically using the PS3 to do something non-related to gaming even though the hardware is nowhere near related. Obviously it is an article written using the PS3 interchangeably with the cell so they don't have to commit the space in the article trying to explain to public what the cell chip is...most are already familiar with the Playstation name.

Great news for Sony/our security
Hope things go for the best for both sides.

actually BAD NEWS for SONY...
This just means that more PS3 consoles are being bought (at a loss for SONY) and will never get any attach revenues because they will not be used for gaming.
The ENTIRE game console market is driven by profits made from game sales.
As said time and time again:
When a console is sold, the manufacturer takes a loss in hopes that it will be made up when people purchase the games for that platform.
Everytime a group takes the PS3 and uses it to run Linux in a cluster, they are getting a steal on a powerful PC, and SONY takes a loss.

Uh-Oh.....Cell + Bush = Homeland Insecurity
We already know what happens when you give too much power to a moron....this has disaster written all over it.

First they wanted to use the PS2 to take out Saddam, now this. The good news is, the U.S. gov't is already used to paying outrageous $$ for things, so price won't be an issue with them. ;)

RUMOR HAS IT
The Taliban uses Gears of War for there field training simulation. So even in modern warfare its still Xbox360 vs. PS3 ; )
Fisher339  +   2783d ago
lol, all fanboyism aside, that made me laugh
Blankman  +   2783d ago
haha wasnt aware of that rumor but whateva. I am still mad at sony for pushing rainbow 6 back graw and even sigma:(. I know its not their fault but even though i prefer my ps3 i am begining to get cozy with 360. Games get delayed and still come out in worse quality. They better make good on their 380 game promise. I mean even if its only half that. thats good enuff

"The research is being done on this small supercomputer, believe it or not it has about one-quarter the computing power of the lab's 8,000 square foot supercomputer."

Now thats scary...
Apocalypse Shadow  +   2783d ago
you could get home security with ps3.
remote free could allow you to access your ps3 and eyetoy camera or the future pseye over the net with psp.and record short video to catch someone in the act.

the cell chip and the ps3 are so versatile.more companies are learning this every day.

what a dumb kid
that kid that said its bad for sony??

if u buy a PS3 and use it for something else how is that bad? they got what they wanted - u to buy a PS3 - what u do with it - they dont care lol either way sony wins
Khann  +   2783d ago
No.
Sony sells the Ps3 at a loss. That means they LOSE money for EVERY console sold. The way they MAKE money, is through GAMES and ACCESSORIES. People like this wouldn't be buying GAMES or ACCESSORIES, therefore sony is not MAKING any money.

But that point is completely irrelevant anyway, because they're not buying the console itself, they're using the Cell chip.
