GameShard review Arcanum to coincide with its release on Gog.com:
"A compelling and convincing world coupled with a deep character design, an involved story with a few surprises, and some well drawn characters are let down by an over reliance on staple RPG dungeon crawling and a combat system that only occasionally reaches the dazzling heights of mediocrity. If you like big involved RPGs this game is well worth a look, even if only because Arcanum tries to create something a little different to all the Tolkien copies out there."
BacklogCritic: "There are many games with RPG elements such as experience points, levels, quests, dialogue trees or wheels, but offering the same solutions and the same outcomes no matter how personalised the characters may seem, which makes them cosmetic RPGs. Here is our top 10 RPGs of all time"
No Skyrim? No Fallout 3/4? No Mass Effect? No Dragon Age? No Dark Souls? No Final Fantasy? Meh
Too many old games nobody plays! This list sucks...
Apart from NV on top and Arx Fatalis in the list, I pretty much agree with it. Good games, in depth systems worthy of being called RPGs. Full blown RPGs.
There are no good rpgs so far. I mean, really good. The genre still has to get a masterpiece (like action adventures e.g.). The closest one so far is Witcher 3, but still so far to go.
If you want an immersive world to dive into while you wait for Torment, why not try one of these story-driven epics?
I really want Torment.. but the price point is just too much for me to go into it at launch. Gotta wait for a good sale for it.
Nectar Game Studios, a Cincinnati based indie company, has a Kickstarter that went live January 5th for what is named Project Resurgence: "An episodic single-player computer RPG inspired by the classics of the late 90s, set in a world fusing dark fantasy and dieselpunk."
Project Resurgence is described as: "A narrative-driven roleplaying game set in the land of Lumen, a gritty and volatile world being rebuilt after a great disaster. In this mysterious environment, there are no right or wrong answers—only actions and consequences. To discover the secrets of this world, you must first uncover your own veiled past, by any means you see fit. As you fight, sneak, or persuade your way toward the truth, one question constantly hangs: will you bring order or let chaos reign? If you can navigate the myriad terrors both monstrous and human, then maybe—just maybe—history will remember your name."
The inspirations for the game include: Arcanum, Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate, and Fall...
