Nintendo Now writes: Over the past 20+ years, Nintendo has created many new and cutesy gaming characters. From Donkey Kong, to Star Fox, and of course Super Mario. They had such a huge roster they created a game where all Nintendo characters could duke it out. Of course the game is Super Smash Bros. During those Nintendo 64 years, just about every character on the Nintendo roster made an appearance on the console. We saw Link, Donkey Kong, Mario, Star Fox, and many others. Just about every character that was in Super Smash Bros. made an appearance on the Nintendo 64. That was a good thing because it showed Nintendo hasn't forgotten that the fans love many other franchises as well.
-Star Fox
-Banjo Threeie (I wish Nintendo had bought the IP off Rare before selling them)
-Donkey Kong
-Pilotwings
-Blast Corps
Maybe it's because I play a lot of Brawl, but I keep hearing how great a Star Fox Wii would be, same with Kirby Wii (Which was supposedly in production since Gamecube).
"What Nintendo has forgotten to do, is bring back all their other franchises like they did for the Nintendo 64 and the Gamecube. Since the Wii launched in 2006 we've only seen Link, Samus, and a CRAPLOAD of Mario."
This excludes:
Punchout (hilarious given the fact n64 and gc never brought this back)
Wario
Excitebike
"How many Mario games have we seen on the Wii? I'll just take a wild guess and say about 8-10 games."
If you count every game with mario as a mario game (like Mario Kart) then I get to count Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast as disproving the lack of Donkey Kong.
Yeah, we all want star fox. But we had them every gen till now. Let me have my punchout. The glaring omissions basically end up saying that this guy wants the franchises he likes - screw the rest of them.
The article clearly states that Nintendo forgot about all the other franchises they have, so I have no idea why you said "this guy wants the franchises he likes - screw the rest of them."
The article clearly states that a majority of other successful Nintendo franchises exist, why haven't we seen them.
People just focus on the mario, or zelda...kinda sad.
Their spectrum is small.
It's a completely valid point that we've gotten some core franchises that HAVE been on the shelf for awhile. PunchOut, being a biggie. Plus not one, not two, but three Excite racers.
This is just what Nintendo does. They skipped the entire N64 gen with Metroid, one of the big three franchises!
We got two Star Foxes last gen -- Adventures and Assault. And y'know what? Not the best the series has to offer.
OTOH, we're actually only getting one real LoZ. TP was a port.
And Metroid? It's not like we're getting the same games with minor updates. Other M is the first proper third person Metroid since 1994.
Maybe it's just me...but for some reason, Nintendo is damned if they do, and damned if they don't.
Release old franchises? "Nintendo doesn't do new IP!"
Announce some new RPGs and series reinventions? "Nintendo doesn't give us all the old stuff!"
reason why there was no metroid on n64 was that gunpei yokoi(metroid creator) died in a car accident
What is funny is bwii should have been star fox. That would have made a lot more people buy the game plus bwii rocks. Commanding the whole starfox crew bwii style would have been fun. It's not too late to do it I mean what is kuju working on?
If we don't get some of these games then I'm sure they are coming next gen. There is a lot of good games coming and if you actually played resort their was your wave race and pilot wings fix.
He's factually incorrect. They brought back punchout on wii and never had it on gc or n64. So it turns out that they didn't always bring back every franchise in those days.
Secondly he neglected Wario and Excitebike as returning, as well as donkey kong in dk barrel blast. Major oversight there.
Lastly I'm not saying anything about future punchout titles. I'm saying his neglect of the new one in this point shows that he doesn't care about the nintendo titles he doesn't like. Where's his Kid Icarus example returning or n64 or gc? Oh yeah...
He's wrong factually. More than Mario, link, and samus have appeared on wii of the classic titles. Some of them like punchout haven't existed in n64 or gc times disproving the idea that nintendo always brings back old popular games. Read the quote at the top of my post - my entire reply is directly disproving it. There's almost no opinion till the end.
Saying that though I wouldn't mind some of their other franchises making appearances but we're not entitled to them and Nintendo are releasing plenty of awesome games from old franchises and from new.
I think Punch Out is a real nice example of how Iwata has made the Wii a continuation of the NES and SNES though.
(Plus, Makoto Kanō and Hiroji Kiyotake were main designers of the original.)
And Shigy himself said they were still trying to come up with something for the N64:
"Even through the entire Nintendo 64 period we were thinking of ways to produce a new Metroid title. We couldn't come up with any concrete ideas or vehicle at that time."

So the personnel was there to make a game for the N64. They just chose not to do it.
Which is consistent with bob's point -- this is just what Nintendo does. They sometimes skip a gen of consoles with certain series. It's factually incorrect to state otherwise.
yea less mario more zelda!!!
We keep the same amount of Mario, Zelda, and Metroid currently planned...and add Star Fox, F-Zero, and Pikmin. Just sayin'.
