Early iPad reaction: 'It's just a giant iPod touch'

PC World: "After hitting a grand slam with the iPhone, Apple can't be too happy with some of the early reaction to the iPad. On message boards, Twitter, blogs, and Facebook, a recurring theme has been to compare the device to a "giant iPod touch."

Considering none of the naysayers have ever handled an iPad, the comparison may seem harsh. But viewing the demo, it's not hard to see how people came to this conclusion..."

no Flash support and no multi tasking = no buy. ill stick to my iPhone.

LoVeRSaMa3005d ago (Edited 3005d ago )

dw mate, I got it ;P

and yea, the reaction from everyone I talk to about it is as reads:

"Its just a giant touch"

The artical picks on afew fair points like price, and flash support (Bloody annoying), apple are going to be begging adobe for Flash support sooner or later.

No USB also, its thick enough so..

Blaze9293005d ago

" It is an awful name....period."

Oh...I see what you did there!

STK0263005d ago

About flash support, how can Apple claim it'S like having the internet in your hands if it can't even handle Flash? How can they say it's the best way ever to browse the internet, if this essential feature is left out? Would it be really that hard to get Flash support on it? And it's not like it's not powerful enough to support it, as other portable devices can handle it.

Also, in the video Apple has released, they claim there's no better way to watch movies than on the iPad and that they used the latest technology to create it, yet, there's no OLED screen. Now, I do realize an OLED screen would make it significantly more expensive, but it would also give it a better battery life and, would look better.

Of course, not everything is bad, the price is nice (although the pricing of "bigger models" still doesn't make any sense, 100$ for 16GB of memory? and 100$ more for an additional 32?), it looks responsive and fast, and being retrocompatible with iTouch apps is very nice, and not something I expected. Let's see how they price the keyboard, and I might just get one.

ThanatosDMC3005d ago

Anybody know the specs of this thing?

Motion3005d ago (Edited 3005d ago )

It's not Adobe's fault. If you try to use flash with the iPhone, you get this message-

“ADOBE FLASH PLAYER – Flash Play not available for your device, Apple restricts use of technologies required by products like Flash Player. Until Apple eliminates these restrictions Adobe cannot provide Flash Player for the iPhone or iPod Touch.”

One can only assume its the same way with the iPad. Apple wants to create a closed system that they have total control over, and Flash is way to open, so it is not allowed on Apple hardware. (Source: http://www.wired.com/gadget... )

BulletToothtony3005d ago

they have trashed apple since i can remember..

if we try to look at it as a laptop it fails big time..

but as a portable entertainment device it's really freaking cool.. is it overpriced.. as of now it seems so.. all i know is that a lot of people can't afford apple products so they bash them without trying them or they bash them just to fit in..

if you want it and got the money buy it.. otherwise just let apple be and shut tha hell up

FarEastOrient3005d ago

Oh new gadget! I want one...

meepmoopmeep3005d ago

Flash is a resource hog, i know

lsujester3005d ago

At 1.8:

Then Apple needs to shut tha hell up about how superior everything they make is, even when it has serious issues.

TOSgamer3005d ago (Edited 3005d ago )

@1.8

And what exactly can this magic entertainment device that is so cool do that a $300 netbook can't? Let's see it has a touch screen and its thinner. What can a netbook for $200 less do that this thing can't? For one thing a netbook doesn't fail miserably as a computer. USB ports, mem card readers, flash sites, flash games and a real keyboard. And you can actually use it on your lap without breaking your neck. Just keep telling yourself its sooo cool because its Apple and you're special because you can afford Apple's overpriced crap. Truth is anyone can buy this thing working 7 days at Mcdonalds. It's just that most have the common sense not to overpay for stuff as see it for what it is.

madpuppy3005d ago

That Kotex owns the copyright for the name "ipad".

:P

Raz3005d ago

They change one letter in the name, and act all surprised when people start making comparisons? Puh-leeeeeze.

Looks viable, at any rate; it figures Apple would be the one to come up with something like the PADD in Star Trek.

masterg3005d ago

You just know Apple will release a multitasking iPad a year later. They are so damn diabolic.

Seriously, who wants to use something that can only handle one thing at a time.

DarthTigra 3005d ago

LOL! Ima have to use that

thesummerofgeorge3004d ago

Who is the iPad for exactly? Why would anyone choose this over a laptop or a netbook? I must be missing something.

Raz3004d ago

Two words: cloud computing.

I guarantee that's what Apple's looking ahead to. Can't let MS have too much of a head start, after all. They already learned their lesson about THAT.

Who cares? Microsoft's new tablets will wipe the floor with Sony's lamo iPad. The only people who will buy this are mindless PS3 fanboys.

...Wait, it's by Apple? Never mind, carry on.

Agent Smith3005d ago

Lol, when was the last time M$ ever came out with good hardware? Umm, never.

maniacmayhem3005d ago

Classic...just classic!

Props and bubbles!

Tanny922253005d ago

I see what you did there...

Nitrowolf23005d ago

i didn't agree with you, but MS table to me is more interesting then this. This is indeed just a giant ipod touch, seems pointless to me. Although i like MS table from what i have seen so far, but that is going to cost allot of $$$ when it launches, also i have obnly seen video of it being able to access your phone when you set it ontop of it.

It is a giant iPod Touch with a big ass ugly bezel and a feminine hygiene name.

kaveti66163005d ago

The only thing I didn't like about IPOD touch was that it was too small.

The iPad is great, in that regard.

It's slightly weak, but in a few years we will be moving in a direction of powerful tablet devices, and Apple might lead the way.

ryhanon3005d ago

I agree for the most part, I'm not sure what demographic they're hoping to corner with this device... but we'll see.

To put things into perspective though, consider this:

The Amazon Kindle, while it hasn't been a smash hit, has certainly been reasonably successful and costs just under $500 ($489) and has nowhere near the functionality that the iPad has for just $11 more. The only thing the Kindle really has going for it is the free 3G, but at the $500 price tag I'm thinking the iPad looks to be the more attractive purchase.

I definitely don't expect this to be successful on the same level as the iPod or iPhone, but at this price point I could easily see it killing off the Kindle and most of the other ebook reading devices on the market today.

sashimi3005d ago

you are so right n4g...when i hear the name iPad the only thing going through my mind is a "feminine hygiene product?" lol

Wildarmsjecht3005d ago

The Amazon kindle costs 259 dollars.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0...

Also, if you want to add 3G to the iPad (lol..period) it'll cost you an extra 130 bucks.

ryhanon3005d ago

True enough, but I was comparing it to the Kindle with similar screen size/storage and that's $489.

http://www.amazon.com/Kindl...

Wildarmsjecht3005d ago

I suppose anyone going for the bigger specs would compare the 2 prices, but then we have to factor in AtnT service, or 3G being an extra 130.

While I don't think it'll sell on functionality alone, I do believe it will sell from Apple-heads wanting to get anything and everything Apple regardless of what the competition may have even if its perhaps better and cheaper.

feelintheflow3005d ago

I will be buying it for an ereader and part time web browser and for school. I mean I don't see me saying to myself hmmm.. I want to download this book but I don't have the 3g that the kindle does, so I have to wait until I get home. So the 3g doesn't do it for me. I love my iphone but wish it was bigger. I use my iphone at home to surf the web, facebook, etc. So instead of the kindle dx I was about to order, I will be buying this. Having epub is a big deal also.

The eink screen is the biggest draw card for me (Kindle)....

-------

I would hope not. If they'd found a way to incorporate colour eink tech (maybe PixelQI type tech), i'd be all for it (and that's what my fingers were crossed for). Far as i can tell, though, the IPad is just a netbook sans the keyboard with not quite as much tech and functionality, but with a touch screen interface.

It misses the entire point of ebook reading devices, to my eyes - namely to remove the hideous eye strain caused by trying to read from (backlit) lcd screens for prolonged periods.

I can sort of see the the purpose of the device as a 'bits and pieces of everything' one, but the whole buildup (albeit mainly of hype) regarding ebooks (and getting publishers on board) is a little perplexing when it doesn't seem to have any actual ebook specific (screen) technology built in there.

I'm just hoping it'll worry Amazon regardless, and force them to put down the price of the Kindle DX to something more reasonable (or folks will see the obvious opening and provide something akin to the IPad but with PixelQI or equivalent built in).

beardpapa3005d ago

the kindle doesn't really have "free" 3G. I read an article about it somewhere but part of the cost of an ebook you purchase off the Kindle store pays for the whispernet bandwidth.

The kindle does have a google search and experimental web browser, but it's really only good for sites that are heavy with text and/or optimized for kindle.

I would think you'd have a more pleasant experience browsing the web with an iPhone than you do with the kindle.

OpenGL3005d ago

How exactly do you plan to run PowerPC or x86 based OSX on a device with an ARM processor?

n4gn4gn4gn4g3005d ago

...well Steve did say it was 'magical'.

washingmachine3005d ago

it would be nice if it were more like a computer that gave you full internet with flash and java, but i guess its not marketed like that. cant even use osx apps lol. why on earth are they tryn to have 6 different options and prices, thats just stupid. will geta netbook with ion 2 lol. the battery life is cool tho
