This week's edition of Critical Reception examines online reaction to BioWare's sci-fi RPG sequel Mass Effect 2, which reviews describe as "vivid, dramatic and characterful." Mass Effect 2 currently earns a score of 96 out of 100 at Metacritic.com.
this might be GOTY.
From what I've played so far, it's a pretty good game but it's way too early to tell, it's only January.
Doesn't feel like GOTY to me - then again I'm only a couple of hours in... However, at the same amount of play time with UC2 and LBP (in fact with the LBP beta) I knew I was playing something special. Maybe Dragon Age has stolen ME2's thunder a bit... r.
Saaking said it wouldn't get over a 95 on metacritic, lets see if hes right :)
Honestly, even if it deserves it, I doubt it will get it, for the simple fact that it's being released so early in the year. It will be all but forgotten by the fickle media as they hype the next big thing over the coming months. Which is but one reason I dislike how "GOTY" awards are handled.
I agree with Unicron, games released early in the year are usually forgotten by the time the awards are given out.
You're right Unicron. It's a shame but that is pretty much what happens. With all the other great games releasing this year it'll be tough to pick the GOTY. edit: @Stan, My opinion of ME isn't quite as harsh as yours but I was disappointed that it wasn't as much of an RPG as it was a TPS. ME2's RPG side is dumbed down even more which is a shame as it's a great game and deeper RPG elements could have made it so much better.
I'm always concerned when games receive such lofty acclaim because there is rarely a dissenting opinion and that's always misleading. To be honest, I thought the first Mass Effect was little more than a mediocre 3rd person shooter masquerading as an action RPG. Most, if not all reviews have said they've refined the combat and simplified the inventory and squad management. Seems to me they've made a better 3rd person shooter.
Careful Stan, that's unbiased logic there. Don't argue with the media, or you're a fanboy!
http://www.metacritic.com/g... It's amazing how this game has yet to get anything under a 9. BioWare must be really proud. I am very happy for them. I think this game will not be forgotten and will be a GOTY contender for sure. GTAIV released early in the year and got GOTY so I don't see how this game cant. At the very least it will get RPG GOTY.
My feeling is that if Bioware releases a steady stream of solid DLC over the year (and especially if people's predictions of the game coming to the PS3 later in the year prove true), that might just be enough to keep ME2 in the public eye long enough to nab GOTY.
Those rumors have persisted since September 2007. It's January 2010; it's very, very unlikely. There were published reports siting "credible sources" as saying a PS3 version of Mass Effect was even complete and would be released in May 2008, 6 months after the XBox 360 release and that didn't happen. I'm sure we'll have more "credible sources" implying that "no comments" and "I don't knows" mean more than they imply. October 11th, 2007 “Microsoft has not yet announced specifics regarding sequels to “Mass Effect” but we’ll be talking to EA and BioWare in the weeks to come.” http://news.teamxbox.com/xb... February 13th, 2008 “Frank Gibeau, the president of EA’s Games Label revealed that the publisher has 'struck an agreement with Microsoft to handle future publishing for Mass Effect.'" http://www.monstersandcriti... I think at some point EA and Microsoft sat down and came to an agreement regarding Mass Effect’s exclusivity. I think the language is very clear. I don't think Microsoft would disadvantage itself in any kind of negotiations given the success of Mass Effect at this point.
its a sure GOTY contender already.. but unicon has a point .. it might be forgotten .. but if u remember bk to 2008 MGS4 was early ish .. but was still remembered ... so i dont think this game will fade from ppl minds just for the fact its has so much replay value it will stick in the light for a few months.. i believe..
@ StanLee, fair enough. I'll leave a potential PS3 release out of the equation. If Bioware releases enough DLC through the year, or even a full-on expansion like the one Dragon Age will be getting, that could be enough to remind people come the end of the year. Think about it: January release, a few DLCs released between now and the summer, and then a big expansion for September (and then the unavoidable "GOTY" edition which will include everything). It could happen. Not that it really matters, though. It's a great game and I'm enjoying it quite a bit right now.
It's really good game. GOTY material for sure but I liked first one better. They've cut RPG elements, no inventory or no planet exploration. I liked to dwell in the inventory checking stuff, gear upgrades and cruising through pretty much barren planets looking around in overly jumpy Mako. They took fun out of many elements making it more professional.
2010 has just begun, have you seen the lineup this year? Whichever game wins GOTY this year is one HUGE accomplishment.
...is a 20 year old franchise and would've been impossible to forget at the end of the year in 2008 for GOTY. So that's not quite fair to use MGS4. ME2 is a much newer franchise so it's hard to say whether or not it will stand the test of time in the race to overall GOTY. That being said AND looking at the other announced RPGs for 2010 I feel safe to say it's a shoe-in for RPG GOTY. Now if I could snag a PC/Laptop to play it on I'd really be pleased, particularly if it's not announced for PS3 for 2010.
It's been a long time since I have had trouble putting a game down but Mass Effect 2 has me totally emersed.
i'm with you on that! time flew by while i was playing.
how you can spend hours on this game and not even notice. I couldn't stop playing last nite. Since I pick this game up on Monday I've been that sleepy dude at work. Damn you Mass Effect 2!! On a side note: I love the game, but they stripped away the RPG elements to a point which has made me a bit disappointed. I love what this game does, I don't like that it feels like a 3rd person shooter with a conversation wheel. Bioware, if you are listening, please put some more focus on the "RPG" elements for our next installment!
Yeah it has had a lot of the content stripped away but on the bright side the inventory management in the first game got ridiculous by the end of the game. I would like to see some more variety in weapon and armor load outs though.
GOTY? It's January... This game won't win. 11 more months of games will cloud memories. Not hating... just speaking truth.
Gamers typically have a very short attention span, so by the time the award selections come, most gamers will have forgotten about Mass Effect 2 and will pick whatever game they are currently playing as "Game of the year". That's not to say Mass Effect 2 doesn't deserve any recognition, as it is clearly a fantastic game. I'm afraid it just came out at the wrong time if it wants to be selected for meaningless "Game of the year" awards.
dam good game it will never be on ps3 if it does surface im afraid it wouldnt be in this year but game of the year is going to be halo reach mark my words bungie has alo of aces up there sleeves and the final product is going to look amazing
Yawn ... Same as the first ... Games deserves no better than 8.5 really .. 8 hours in and I am already pushing myself to play it .. Not good
