Ars reviews Mass Effect 2

Ars writes: "Mass Effect made waves in the world of eastern-style RPGs, but the game had some major flaws that dulled the experience. On the 360, the vehicle sections where you drove your land-based transport were often frustrating due to unwieldy controls. You spent way too much time in elevators as the game loaded the next section. Dealing with your inventory could be a nightmare. The PC version of the game addressed many of these issues, but Bioware certainly knew where it could go to make the game better for the much-anticipated sequel."

I loved the first one. The few minor flaws didn't really detract from the overall awesomeness of the game. It's still one of my top 3 favorite games this generation. It's looking like Mass Effect 2 will likely end up on the top of that list as well.

"Seven Samurai in space" is a very keen comparison. Hadn't thought of it.

I must be the only person on the planet who didn't have a problem with the driving parts of the 1st game.

I enjoyed them, I also liked having some sense of strategy to load out and combat, which have both been completely aborted from the game.

The Mako controls were fixed in the PC version of the game.

Maybe most people just sucked at driving in the game and blamed the game mechanics for their lack of skill.

Thats the problem these days....

the noobs cry and moan about everything and the devs just pander towards their every wim.

I had friends who played the first ME and cried because there was too much talking and they didn't under stand the weapons system.... it's an rpg !

You have the dead space devs talking about gamers saying they can't play the game cos it's too scary... it's a horror game !

I played a bit of ME, first 30 min or so and it was great, but i still could not help but feel a bit disappointed because ya, it really didn't feel like an rpg to me. I really don't want to say much because i have not played the whole game yet and i am hoping there is a lot more to it then what my first impression was with it...

I can say one thing, from what i played the cheesy lines have not been improved and ya that was something that i didn't like about the first.

I would like to see more reviews from people who are not worried about bashing the game if needed.

to sum up how i feel as the article said " You'll have to let go of what you wanted out of a Mass Effect game, and begin to deal with what you've been given."

"The Mako controls were fixed in the PC version of the game. "

I played both versions of the game and I still can't see what people thought was so bad about controlling the Mako. I remember people complaining about the driving in Halo:CE when that first came out. I think gamers these days just forget that some games have to be adapted to and there are certain things you have to learn or re-learn when playing different games. It's like they're use to playing games with the same type of gameplay and the similar user interfaces so much that when they play something different they get mad and take it out on the game and it's devs.

I commend them for stating what they thought was bad about the game. I would at least think Eurogamer wouldn't jump on the band wagon but they did nothing but praise. From the people (or should I say pirates) I know who have played it they agree that there is very little in the way of RPG. They say that it is just another TPS set in space. I will try it probably in April/May once it's on sale.

The only problem I had with the 1st game and what sounds like (from all the reviews) even more so for ME2 is how people are praising this as the first great RPG of the year, while at the same time taking out basically every aspect that makes an RPG.

All in the name of streamlining games...Sooner or later a game will consist of watching the trailer and then having to pay $80!!!

It's up to us to make sure that games don't continue to become lobotomized for the stupidest lowest common denominator!!!

DARK WITNESS3241d ago

Thank you !

Well said and bubbles to you.

exactly how i feel.

Guitardr853241d ago

Thanks, I'm sure Ill get disagrees due to some people thinking games should all be first person and involve shooting people, lol!!!

kraze073241d ago

I haven't played ME2 yet but a friend of mines today said he expects it to be a "crappy game because the gameplay's broken." He actually said the first one was bad because he went in expecting it to have gameplay like Halo. Lol, I thought he was joking when he said that. Gamers these days get too hooked on certain genres that when a cross-breed game comes out they expect to much from them.
