Please Do Not Feed the "Nolan North"

If you've played a video game within the past year, you've probably heard the warm, dulcet tones of voice actor, Nolan North. He's provided the voices of countless dozens of characters. His most notable character, of course, was his brilliant portrayal of Nathan Drake from the Uncharted series. North, along with a cast of supporting actors, took a video game and brought it to the threshold of "almost Hollywood movie" quality. Megan Fox can go sit on a giant metal spike; if anyone deserves an award from Spike for "Best Performance by a Human Male" for next year's Video Game Awards, this man does.

No, from the sound of things its more, "Stop devs from wanting Nathan Drake in their games." He has a bigger range of characters than just that one.

You think? I mean, he did his best Drake in Dark Void... The guy is one demensional if you ask me. He sounds awesome as Drake and it fits but when you start to play other games he's done you start to feel he is being himself when he takes on these characters and not the otherway around.

A good voice man has to be the character and find their own voice and tone. He doesn't do that. He is him from the time he gets out of bed to the time he lays back down.

I like the guy as Drake but he's not talented enough to take on anything else... I think the only reason he works as Drake is because it's the closest thing to him. He isn't the talent people are making him out to be. Talented is Hank Azaria. That guy has talent. He can do it all. This guy can't.

Just check out his Wiki page. considering what he's done, the man's "one dimensional" VA work would have become an issue before now. Its that he's done such a well recognized character as Drake that its come up.

Mars, I don't understand your last post.

"work would have become an issue before now. Its that he's done such a well recognized character as Drake that its come up. "

Do you mean to write "wouldn't" in place of would?

Godmars2903222d ago

Poor sentence structure, and possibly a cold, aside my point is that if the man didn't have some level of range he wouldn't have had the amount of work he's had before Drake. Now that the character's become so recognized, other devs are hiring Nolan and are falling into the habit of wanting Drake.

"The guy is one demensional if you ask me."
"He is him from the time he gets out of bed to the time he lays back down. "
"He isn't the talent people are making him out to be."

Yeah.. That's why he's done voice over work on MOVIES for people like Christopher Walken and John Travolta when they weren't available, because he has no range... That makes sense.

The problem is, devs ask him to be Nathan Drake, that's what they want. He's commented on this several times. His response was, "Really? Are you sure you don't want me to do something else?". But they told him that's what they wanted, so he did it.

FantasyStar3222d ago

Thanks for the clarification. So what you're saying is that Nolan North isn't to blame because the devs want him to act like Drake. But he had to have had talent otherwise he wouldn't have had as many roles before Uncharted. I can agree with that.

If you've played Ratchet and Clank: Crack in Time, he also voices Sigmund, which is NOWHERE near Nathan Drake territory. The guy does have range, he's just being focused like a laser beam into reprising his one role over and over.

nogolis3222d ago

I'm aware of that fact and he still sounds like Nolan North to me. And if you're disagreeing about Hank Azaria not being more talented you're a fool.

Pennywise3222d ago

Hank is talented, but what has he done besides simpson voices in video games?

GamerSigma3222d ago

Do you see the words "Hank" or "Azaria" anywhere in the dude's post? No. Calm down, Mrs. Azaria.

Pennywise3222d ago

LOL.... Silogon, when did you marry Hank?

Dellis3222d ago

He will forever be DRAKE, so he needs to learn how to do voices
or people will start go get annoyed by him.
