2D Mario Leaps Over 3D One in Sales

IGN: Nintendo's short, stocky, Italian plumber is digital proof that 2D games are far from dead.

In just a month and a half, sales of New Super Mario Bros. Wii have exceeded those of Super Mario Galaxy in North America, according to life-to-date numbers through December released by the NPD Group, which tracks videogame software sales. For the record, Galaxy debuted in November of 2007, approximately two full years before Nintendo's multiplayer-enhanced 2D powerhouse.

The story is too old to be commented.

How many times do I have to say this,
New Super Mario Bro's ""IS NOT 2D!!!!""

Has the gaming world lost it's mind! you would never fall for something like that a few years ago =_=

It's 3D!! it's only that a lot of the backgrounds are 2D textures unlike just some of the backgrounds in every 3D game whether they want to admit it or not!

I know you real gamers out there spotted it right away, but somethign's going wrong in the gaming world.

Nintendo are selling out.. and no they are not doing the right thing just because they are earning more money...!!! it's just like a company who makes widgets deciding to buy cheaper materials so it's becomes a cheap product, but in this case it's software and anyone with the slightest gaming knowledge would know that they are quick cheap and easy to make games.

When these so called new hardcore gamers lose interest and the fad is over the games industry will crash because all of the hard core gamers have moved on and will not return because they were dumped by ninty for example =_=

It's 3D!!

End Rant.

Great, now other companies will follow their lead by producing cheap, ugly looking games in hopes of making a quick buck.

Oh wait... they are already doing that. More to come with Natal/Arc.

Well, the gameplay is in 2D. And that's really the important part here.

Both games are awesome and deserve the sales. :)

It doesn't surprise me that the 2d mario would out sell the 3d one. 2d mario is more accessible. Besides, Wii's install base has increased a lot since Galaxy was released.

My sisters stopped playing video games when mario went from 2d to 3d because the controls became too complicated for them.

I must say as a recent buyer of NSMB Wii, it is an excellent game! The nostalgia of 2D, the same music (except more modern), the POW blocks, the pipes, enemies, power-ups.... this is how Mario should be (no offense to Galaxy, another great Mario game).
