A holiday shopping frenzy helped both of Nintendo's video game systems make history: Nintendo's Wii home system sold more than 3.8 million units in December, a new all-time single-month U.S. sales record.
Wow, this is by far one of the best months Nintendo has had in recent memory.
The PS2's record for best month was 2.7 million. The DS would have took the record if it wasn't for the astounding Wii numbers. ...they're still doomed though.
So much for just a fad ey? New Super Mario Bros. Wii is on par with the best games released this year. Awesome game.
The Wii outsells the PS3, 360, PS2, and PSP combined?!? Super Mario Bros Wii has outsold Modern Warfare 2 on 360 despite not being out as long?! Good news though, if you trade in that ps3 or 360, you can almost cover the cost of your new Wii. I'm no geologist, but excuse me while I thrust in everybody's general direction.
NSMBW is great and wow...3.8 million sold. Mario is still king.
That's all I got to say.
Nintendo managed to UNDERshoot their estimate by over 800,000 consoles. http://www.gamesindustry.bi... 800-frickin-thousand. To get our heads around that, look at NPD from earlier this year. Here's July: http://www.gamasutra.com/ph... The three home consoles combined sold less than 600,000 total. Nintendo's guesstimate was off by more than a combined sales month. I honestly thought they might've been too optimistic with that 3 million holiday prediction. But they almost moved an additional million. ...that's ridonkulous. I absolutely love my Wii, but I sure as heck didn't think a $50 price cut and NSMB would kickstart sales like that.
That is just sick numbers right here. I can already here the meltodwn happening with butt hurt fanboys, do you hear it? The choir is coming in strong now..."Well only soccermoms and grandma's buy it" "Real gamers buy..." I love the theater that goes on. But I can't get over how they sold nearly 1m more than its competitors COMBINED! That's insane. I don't want to hear any more bull $hit about Wii being doomed or all that other noise they sing because this is unprecedented success Nintendo is having.
"That is just sick numbers right here. I can already here the meltodwn happening with butt hurt fanboys, do you hear it? The choir is coming in strong now..."Well only soccermoms and grandma's buy it" "Real gamers buy..." I love the theater that goes on." LOL yeh you would think after all this time they could find a different excuse this year. You know, to shake things up a bit.
I just don't get the "well it's gotta be (fill in the blank) for why Wii sells." Y'wanna know why Wii sold huge? NSMB. 'Cause NSMB did this: http://www.geekologie.com/2...
Thanks for nothing. For the casual you may be the best, and Mario may bring back childhood memories, but other than that you have NOTHING for the core fanbase that bought your Wii and had nothing good on it besides Mario_______. Nintendo has no business at E3, all they do is add peripheral after peripheral and a variation of Mario. Keep enjoying the past, i will keep playing games that push gaming FORWARD in 360 and PS3.
Sure... Zelda Wii Metroid 3 and Metroid Prime Trilogy Metroid Other M Mario Galaxy Mario Galaxy 2 Smash Bros Sin and Punishment 2 Fire Emblem Wii Punch Out Wii New Super Mario Bros. And the list goes on. The problem is the third party support, not Nintendo because Nintendo is doing what they always did for hardcore gamers but all you want to see is the "bad" side. Nintendo is supporting hardcores AND casuals, not just casuals and not just hardcores.
Super Smash Brothers: Brawl, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, Metroid Prime Trilogy (Collector's Game), Super Mario Galaxy (Currently the Highest Rated Exclucive Game This Generation), Fire Emblem: Radiant Daw, Punch-Out, Mario Kart Wii, Super Paper Mario, Zelda (Upcoming Wii title (U.W.T.)), New Super Mario Bros. Wii (U.W.T.), Metroid Other M (Team Ninja X Nintendo (U.W.T.), Sin and Punishment 2 (U.W.T.), Super Mario Galaxy 2 (U.W.T.), Monado (U.W.T.) Wow, Look at all of that support from Nintendo to the core gamer. Now here is a little homework: Compare all of core/hardcore titles you have just seen (which is not even all of them) to the "casual" titles like Wiisports, Fit, Music, etc. All of this crap like shovleware and kiddy games is primarily 3rd party devs fault for being lazy with the console from the very start. Remeber, Nintendo wanted the Wii to be "Everyone's Console". Not "The Casuals and Kid's Console".
the 2 lists i just saw are not what i am looking for. Super Smash Bros, no thx. Mario this and that, nope. Zelda Gamecube for Wii... i got so bored with it, even Mario Galaxy got boring (for me at least). I dont find the Wii as a real gaming option for the core gamers. If you like it so much then good for you. Oh and Metroid, yeah nice Gamecube game with gimmick controls
"to each his own" Then quit writing this trash in our section. Metroid is a gamecube game but GTA isn't a ps2 game with updated graphics or halo isn't an xbox game with better lighting huh? "Oh and Metroid, yeah nice Gamecube game with gimmick controls" Dual analog is trash for aiming and that's why "core" gamers need auto and sticky aiming. Real hardcore, keep playing on ezmode guys.
After playing Uncharted ( which I own *facepalm* ) and downloading a few shooter titles via PSN I can tell you right now aiming with the WiiMote makes dual analog look like the gimmick. Unless you speak for every core gamer, your opinion on those titles means nothing. But nevertheless, we have shown you titles other than just Mario that were core games and those were just Nintendo titles.
The Wii section be polluted with posts like that one. I mean really, I NEVER frequent a PS3 or 360 section because I've no interest in those junior PC's. But I don't try and rain on the parade of those that do. But no the Wii section has all sorts of creeps coming out the wood work to spin a negative out of a positive and vice versa. It is sometimes entertaining but mostly just sad. Once a negative article or "news" bit pops up about Wii bet your candy asses that this place will be flooded by hundreds of useless comments and the scattered a few sensible people trying to fight the good fight by bringing logic into the equation. Happy new year huh?
Here is the worst part: 1. If you prove them wrong, they are just going to just preach the same crap on another Wii article. LMFAO, debating on N4G articles is like football. Lose one argument, start another one or change the game plan (game plan = subject). 2. If there is enough Wii haters on one article, we lose bubbles in our own facking section (WTF!?). 3. Anyone doing this on the PS3 section's gamer zone will be banned before they can refresh the page. Which brings me to my question: Who's modding the Wii section, STEVIE F*CKIN WONDER!? 7_7 Wii section on N4G = Joke
"I can tell you right now aiming with the WiiMote makes dual analog look like the gimmick. " lol i know the analogs are not the best for shooters (mouse + KB are) but praising the wii controls is just hilarious. I tried CoD (the WW2 one) on the Wii and it was a gimmick, the same goes for Metroid. Now Wii owners can opt for the Wii Plus adapter, what a joke. Wii is aimed mainly at casuals and Nintendo Franchises fans, other than that 3rd party support is misserable, and Nintendo titles are a rehash from the past. The Wii is a modified Gamecube, and by now the visuals, other than cartoony Mario titles, are pathetic. Nintendo is printing money, and im glad i am not contributing to gaming stagnation
"but praising the wii controls is just hilarious. I tried CoD (the WW2 one) on the Wii and it was a gimmick, the same goes for Metroid." Then you suck at aiming them. I played FPS on pc since doom II and wiimote is almost as good. You have no hand-eye coordination but for those of us who do you sound like a moron. Just because you suck at video games doesn't mean we do.
Shooting with the Wiimote is a gimmick, but dual analog isn't? You know kid, in a war, you'd be the very first to go. I can see it already. You: "I CAN'T AIM WITH THIS GIMMICK! WHERE'S MY DUAL ANALOG!?"
"3. Anyone doing this on the PS3 section's gamer zone will be banned before they can refresh the page. Which brings me to my question: Who's modding the Wii section, STEVIE F*CKIN WONDER!? 7_7" What if we posted blogs just to coordinate us leaving to a better forum as articles? Every time the wii population gets bigger here we can post again. It works for the jews. You know odds are 20:1 viral marketing, gullible morons, and incompetent mods are ruining this site. The wii section in news for gamers seems to be entirely for people who don't own a wii.
"lol i know the analogs are not the best for shooters (mouse + KB are) but praising the wii controls is just hilarious." You really can tell the ones full of BS. How in the world can dual analog sticks be any comparison to a wii remote...your hand moves much more accurate then your thumbs. The dual analog will always get pawned. The only thing i think of is that you are aiming at the tv and not the sensor bar. Alot of game critics early on said the twilight princess controls didnt work half the time. Mainly because the morons werent pointing it at the sensor bar. Which is your virtual area for your tv. When it comes down to it you use the tv as a guide. The sensor bar is where you have to aim. But im sure you knew that.....
Oh, c'mon. A dual analog vs. IR/pointer thing had to start here, too? I will never understand those that prefer thumbsticks for aiming. And bob already started on this, but it's worth mentioning...if your control scheme requires extensive "sticky aiming," or "aim assist," or "bullet curving," or "enlarged hit boxes," or any of the other euphemistic terms used for methods of making DA playable in FPS...how is that "hardcore"? As for Metroid, the control scheme in Corruption is frickin' sublime. The more I go back and play Trilogy, the more I realize that despite all of the customization options in TCon and MWR...I kinda like Retro's scheme the best.
The following photo is of Nintendo executives at press time: http://img5.uploadhouse.com...
got to thank to many over weight Americans, and a lot of soccer moms.
And young women. Believe it or not they play the wii now. I know, it's hard to believe. Maybe if you talk to more of them you'll understand.
What do you have against soccermoms? many of them are str8 milf's. I mean come on man give it a rest already what is this 3 years and you guys are echoing the same marketing bonanza and PR crap from 2006..Get a new Shtick.
The people who said it was a fad look stupid right now the wii is on pace to break the sales records set by the ps2.
Third parties: "We are going to focus development on PS3/360 because Wii sales are slowing down.... ahhhh damn... nevermind"
let them bleed. There are consequences for not supporting the market leader. Third parties have no one to blame but themselves. But if they were smart they'd look at history, the PC gaming market is not for everyone. And many devs think they are PC devs when they are in fact console devs. They'll find out soon enough which is which, but by then it may be too late.
I hope to god it happens and the following period of weak investment prompt a return to titles focused on gameplay, particularly 2d platformers and shumps. I want arcade games again. These people think they can handle a storyline themselves with no work at all so they waste time on graphics and features. But then the product they produce is built entirely around a cinematic model where the story is elevated as the purpose of the game! There's a reason Fallout 1 and 2 had much more content and were much better written than 3. They used a simple game engine and primitive graphics to focus on the writing. Even to genius good writing isn't easy (there are some very bad books by very great authors). It takes supreme arrogance to assume you can write a compelling narrative with minimal effort. Games like Mass Effect are rare exceptions, not the rule. The greatest story games ever were fallout 1/2 and chrono trigger for 2 reasons. The story was adequate or acceptable given the presentation AND the player's choices fundamentally changed the progression of the game. In both you did something and went elsewhere and the world had changed dramatically in a realistic, understandable way. Though they were story based and the story wasn't superb they were passable and the feeling of choice was given to the player. Now we have games where the gameplay is literally thought of as a way to progress horrid cutscenes, voice acting, and writing. Player choices have ornamental effects on the plot (at best). Most of the time the writing is so bad I don't care about it yet the focus on cinematics have crippled the gameplay. Very often glaring errors in setting or representations of culture make the entire atmosphere grating and unrealistic. We then have a game with poor writing by novices. This writing is established as the central element of a video game. The gameplay is terribly neglected and thus almost pointless. Once the money wasted on these elements of games tanks those companies or at least forces them to reconsider their strategy we are much more likely to get gameplay focused titles again. HOTD: Overkill was ok and I played it a couple times through, but the focus and resources wasted on the story made the gameplay suffer (even to the point where a rail shooter lagged). Meanwhile I've put 45 hours completing everything in HOTD 2 and 3 while laughing at the story. "Don't come!" in HOTD 2 is unintentionally funnier and more entertaining than anything in HOTD Overkill. People look at the sales of Overkill and say M content on the wii fails. They should instead realize that cinematic content on the wii fails - we want fast gameplay like HOTD 2 and 3 and the plot be damned!
"them bleed. There are consequences for not supporting the market leader. Third parties have no one to blame but themselves." The elephant in the room here is that it's looking like the major Wii third party titles that are going to benefit from this are going to be the two-year-old port from Activision and the non-mini-game Rabbids title, both of which play to sets of the system's strengths. The problem of a lot of third parties, like say, Sega, is that they make the mistake of lumping games like Overkill with stuff like, say, The Conduit: They're both shooters and they're both 'hardcore', or at least said to be, so they're both the same, really! It doesn't matter that one game is well-received by the public and the other, uh, isn't. At all. Or that one game is developed by a studio with a pedigree of fondly-viewed sleeper hits and the other by a studio with a pedigree of licensed games. Something like The Conduit, or Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop, or Scar Face: The World is Yours, is expected to sell by virtue of either some sort of notion of hardcore-ness or "Well, the install base is huge! Who cares if the developer designs it well or the publishers spend even a dime on marketing?" That's not how it works, nor is that how it should. But, hey, whatcha gonna do? ""Don't come!" in HOTD 2 is unintentionally funnier and more entertaining than anything in HOTD Overkill." Different strokes, I suppose. That part before the first boss where Caesar knocks that wheel-chair guy's glasses off his face, and then he's wearing them again *in the next shot* gets me every time. "but the focus and resources wasted on the story made the gameplay suffer" What? What Overkill did you play? The plot is essentially non-existent, the completely in-game cinematics -- of which there are maybe twenty in all -- lasted a minute or two tops each time, there were not even attempts made at lip-synching the lines, continuity errors abounded, and the voice cast is all nobodies. In what way could the story have *possibly* funneled away any of these resources and focus that you're talking about? Your general points on stories are valid, but I don't believe Overkill is a useful demonstration of them, as it's probably one of the least story-driven games on the entire system. "People look at the sales of Overkill and say M content on the wii fails" Yes, we call these people "Stupid people" because Overkill did great saleswise -- likely because it's a brilliant game that plays to the Wii's strengths and consumers like it a lot. "They should instead realize that cinematic content on the wii fails - we want fast gameplay like HOTD 2 and 3 and the plot be damned!" Who-hoa. Speak for yourself, there, Hoss. Having experienced the boundless, sometimes game-breaking, glitches of HOTD 2/3 myself, I'd take Overkill by a country mile.
Price drop and New Super Mario Bros pushed the Wii over the top. Congrats to Nintendo for releasing an excellent 2d mario game. Super Mario Bros on the NES was my introduction to gaming. Thank you Nintendo.
I just wish they had more of a friends system, they kinda messed up on that one! But hey it is mostly played by my kids...Well except some games like SMB Wii.
umm, Nintendo is DOOMEZ ..oh guess not. well at least they manage to stay up even during the bad economy.
"12 - OMFG wii is trash wen is dumb ppl gonna get the point.Ok u buy a wii for $200 wtfff r u getting besides mario crappp.u cnt play dvd's or music" Dumb people huh? lol Are you an example of a person who is not a dumb>>? Because you sure wrote that comment like a dumb-ass.
Bro I think the N4G site had a bit O lag , your reply went on me hehe btw true that.
Yeh sorry, my net has been slowed due to me going over my download limit. That's how the net rolls in australia.
wii is trash wen is dumb ppl gonna get the point.Ok u buy a wii for $200 wtfff r u getting besides mario crappp.u cnt play dvd's or music ,online is past dated ok they getting netflix hopefully that crap doesnt blow up on u
Wii is actually the only system that really doesn't blow up on you. RROD/YLOD FTW
Nintendo has made a pretty big dent in the industry. Congrats to them...just release some hardcore games dammit.
2d mario isn't hardcore? Did you start gaming on ps1? They have a wii punchout. Do you know how hard that game is? Oh yeah, hardcore means sociopathic murder and sex. They typically focus on a bunch of roided out and sweaty men trapped in a war zone with no women in sight. From the look of most hardcore games I think you guys like big muscles more than women.
Lol I give a compliment to the wii and the new casual nintendo and it gets taken as an insult? I guess ill surpress my urge to be nice next time ;)
Backhanded compliments are condescending. This isn't new nintendo, this is 2d mario and the nintendo from decades ago. Hardcore is a buzzword for sex and violence to cover up the fact that gaming is the nerdiest sh!t on the planet. No one has explained to me how a game as easy as GTA (unlimited lives) is hardcore. I have shmups for wii that would make you cry they're so hard. I own an xbox for geometry wars and irkuga. You play irkuga (xba) and you tell me if any modern game is really more hardcore than it.
"Lol I give a compliment to the wii and the new casual nintendo and it gets taken as an insult? I guess ill surpress my urge to be nice next time ;)" lol Hey c'mon,.. he's only making light fun, dont take it too personal. And he does have a good point. There are many "hardcore" titles on the wii. Many great games. And many ps3/360 do seem to hate on soccer moms alot and complain that girls play games more these days because of the wii and DS. ..you gotta wonder sometimes. I mean you would think it could be a great ice breaker for them when it comes to meeting chicks. Let them beat you at wii sports at a party for example. Because ive been to many parties where they have one going on in the background. The system is for everyone. Not just for some sweaty guy playing alone online with some random guy he doesnt even know. (for the most part)
Ok, holidays is over. I still can't find NSMBW for sale... Btw , I think the fan base for HD consoles will only remember the wii for shoveware, even in the Next gen coming up which isn't fair as the system has good games. "But it's not worth getting because it only has like 2 good games..." Need to change that note, the system will have amass a massive game list but being in denial that it only has 2 or so good games is clearly stupid to think. I would like to congratulate Nintendo and men and women that took the time for bringing us games that are NOT shovelware. April 2010...MH333333333333333333333 33333333333333
That Nintendo reign just won't let up...
