Netflix OFFICIALLY Comes to Wii

SAN FRANCISCO - Owners of the Nintendo Wii can finally stop waving their video game controllers in the air and sink back onto the couch. Nintendo is bringing Netflix's online streaming video service to its Wii gaming console, the most popular in the industry, the companies plan to announce Wednesday.

i remeber when this was an xbox360 "exclusive"

heroicjanitor3260d ago

Whoever did the deal at microsoft was a fool for leaving ways in for the others

chrisulloa3260d ago

Microsoft had a timed exclusivity contract, Netflix always wanted to bring it to the iPhone, Wii, and PS3. We've had it for a long while now, you guys are just getting it.

How many Nintendo Wiis are actually connected to Nintendo WiFi anyway?

Will it be 720p? Oh wait...

"How many Nintendo Wiis are actually connected to Nintendo WiFi anyway?"

None, we're all a bunch of technical idiots who would have bought a ps3 or xbox if we weren't so stupid. That's why mario kart and ssbb are so hard to find games for. I mean who can figure out that whole internet thing? We're all just morons and 7 year olds.

"Will it be 720p? Oh wait..."

Do you really sit around and think "this sucks so bad, I wish I had it in 720p. God this is ruined."

Are those dvds you own 720p? I'd hate to be caught dead with them. I threw out all mine when blueray came out because they offended my aesthetic sensibilities.

720p is a big deal. That's a huge difference. Essentially that's the difference between PS2 and 360. When you played a 1st generation 360 or PS3 game in 480i it looks essentially like a xbox/ps2 game.

I know, that's why I threw out all my dvds!

More than just the resolution changed on the new systems. Find me any ps2 game that looks half as good as Gears of War 2 on SD. There's more to graphics than resolution.

Watch a dvd again. That's 480p.

EDIT: Before you disagree I'm genuinely curious: find me any ps2 game that looks as good as Gears of War 2 in SD! The reason first gen games looked so bad is because they weren't using the hardware as efficiently or designing heavily around it!

mikeslemonade3260d ago

Gears of War isn't a first generation game. And I was just saying in general. When I put Motorstorm in for 480i it looked like a PS2 game, but on 720p that game looked real good. And oobob how come you keep making contradictions. I don't even know if you are doing it on purpose or not.

asdr3wsfas3259d ago (Edited 3259d ago )

I'm joking about throwing out my DVDs.

We're not talking about games, which computing power helps in ways other than resolution. We're talking about video. 480p is dvd quality. The point of GOW2 is to show you that even in SD, graphics on an xbox 360 destroy those of a ps2.

If you want an honest comparison look at dvd - that's 480p. My argument is that people here still play DVDs. Hence 480p is good enough for them. So this is misguided and stupid bashing.

EvilTwin3259d ago

As usual, bob is makin' sense. Unless your entire DVD collection has been trashed in favor of Blu-Ray, of course...

And since we're on the topic of movies...if 720p and 60 frames-per-second are the standard for all "1337" gamers (nevermind that some very famous games aren't 60 FPS), why go to a movie theater with that old projector running film at 24 FPS?

Seferoth753259d ago

A. Netflix steams very few titles in HD.
B. If you have been using the service on PS3 or 360 and cant notice, how can you claim HD matters when you arent even getting it on the other two?

That is really easy. No you do not. The only one to charge is MS but you only have to pay for a Gold membership not the service. Besides Netflix offers it as a free service to members.

This is just a reaction to the 360 and PS3 having Netflix making those consoles better choices of multimedia systems than the Wii. Netflix or not, the Wii still sucks because even though you can stream Netflix, a 7 year old movie on DVD won't even be able to play on it without modding it. Huh. Go figure.

"Netflix or not, the Wii still sucks because even though you can stream Netflix, a 7 year old movie on DVD won't even be able to play on it without modding it"

The brilliant insight of nintendo is that everyone who cares already owns a dvd player.

Kinda bothered by the bizzare writing of this NYtimes reporter though. Seriously at one random point he just throws in how sony and microsoft are getting motion too. Which has NOTHING to do with the story. In fact this whole story could have been told in 5 or 6 paragraphs and he extends it to 20! Netflix to accounce service, quotes from reggie, details on netflix service on other consoles, end of article. No need to discuss the wii fad and all that other crap. Of course he probably getting paid by the word and it's the only way a tech journalist knows to pad a story is with hidden bias.

Anyhow, I'm gonna start seeing how that 10 bucks is gonna fit in my budget.

Really!!! For 480p at best? I think $10 would be better spent somewhere else. Until Nintendo comes out with the Wii HD, services like this are not an option for me.

Yeah...dvd quality...god, it's so ugly.

When they came out with blueray I donated all my DVDs to goodwill. Let some poor soul with SDTV enjoy what I can't. By the grace of god may they discover the error of their ways and someday experience blueray.
