Microsoft Confirms Spartan IIIs in Halo Reach?

The original text for the press release stated "Step into the boots of a Spartan III and prepare for the first look at "Halo: Reach," the highly anticipated prequel to the "Halo" trilogy from acclaimed developer Bungie coming fall 2010." However, after posting this article, a number of readers cried foul, asserting that canon made the appearance of a Spartan III at "The Fall of Reach" unlikely (to put it mildly).

It's clear that the Spartan III armor appears nowhere in the Halo: Reach cinema. Because of this, TeamXbox actually responded to comments on the posting and "fixed" the title and text of the announcement shortly after it was posted. However, they have since received requests from Microsoft PR to correct their adjustments to the original press release.

I will wait for bungie's official statement on this one. I still don't believe it. Spartan III's presence on reach screws Halo's history. A lot would have be rewritten to maintain consistency.

Godmars2902893d ago (Edited 2893d ago )

Yeah. aren't Spartan III suppose to be vat grown? That MC is a Spartan I?

@4Sh0w:
Pretty sure the infos on Wiki. I read the first book, half remember it, so I'm not bothering :p

Munky2893d ago (Edited 2893d ago )

If you read the first book, which would have been The Fall of Reach, you wouldn't have read about the Spartan III's. Their story was told in the third book, The Ghost's of Onyx.

Godmars2902893d ago

They were still only talking about producing Spartans, not 2nd stage refinement.

Munky2893d ago (Edited 2893d ago )

What are you talking about... The Fall of Reach is about the Spartan II program (MC and the rest of the Spartan II's), how they were selected, how they were trained, the various missions they took part in, all leading up to the actual Battle of Reach.

STK0262893d ago (Edited 2893d ago )

but why put the Spartan III anyway? They suck, plain and simple. They have inferior weaponry, cheaper armour, less training and are basically the suicide-team of humanity. And, didn't REach fall before the Spartan III program was put into place?

And again, why would anyone want to play as a Spartan III when you can play as a Spartan II?

I'm willing to believe you. However, aren't they sending them by the dozens to not see even one come back alive, most of the time? And if I remember correctly, they can barely handle a brute in a one on one fight in close combat.

Munky2893d ago (Edited 2893d ago )

They don't "suck", they are pretty much the same as their Spartan II cousins except for the fact that they tend to be a tad physcho (the candidate pool wasn't as strict which resulted in the majority of the candidates being orphans from defeated rebel colonies), and their SPI (camouflage) armor was not as advanced as the Mjolnir armor. They were trained by a Spartan II (Kurt), they had all the same augmentations (except for a few extra ones I believe), and the program started roughly during the same time frame as the Spartan II program.

TheBand1t2893d ago

....I'd wanna play as a Spartan III.

jerethdagryphon2893d ago

spartan 1s
ancient greeks, you know the film 300 those guys

sparten 2, kidnapped kids raised to be perfect soldiers, masterchiefs guy

sparten 3; watered down high speed training of adult soldiers with limited bio upgrades
ghosts of onyx guys.

they didnt show up until long after halo,

if there on reach then this prequal is not canon
and is just another way to make money

i like halos story and was looking forward to this game. but not at the cost of canon

Bonsai12142893d ago

spartan iiis didn't start about the same time as spartain iis. they started well after because of cost problems. they actually received more biological enhancements that were more refined than what the spartan iis got.

but they were rushed through training and didn't have the cohesion or battle calm that MC and the rest had. plus their armor was weaker and they were like 13 year old kids. so you wouldn't have shields.

Munky2893d ago (Edited 2893d ago )

Yes they did start roughly at the same time:

Project SPARTAN II Begins - Sep 23, 2517

Project SPARTAN III Begins - Nov 7, 2531

So their was only a difference of 14 years in between the start of the two programs.

And although they were designed to be cheaper and expendable, they were trained just as well as the Spartan II's.

edhe2893d ago

I think there was a Spartan I program which was a basic failure but produced some troopers, one being Johnson.

Munky2893d ago

yup, Sgt. Johnson as well as Chief Mendez (The guy who trained the Spartan II's and the helped Kurt train the Spartan III's ) were both Spartan I's.

ASSASSYN 36o2893d ago

Kurt is a spartan II whom uses spartan III armour. http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/...

And Master Chief is a Spartan II commando.

lol, I know a little background about Halo, but not enough to know what the hell they are talking about. ASSASSYN 36o can you help a brotha out with some info about what this all means?

Munky2893d ago

what you need to know man? I can help you out answering your questions :)

i3eyond the Circle2893d ago

There may be some secrets of Reach unveiled in the upcoming game.

Isn't reach like the UNSC base of operations?

I wouldn't put it past Bungie to have Reach hold some super secret facilities that haven't been unveiled to the fans.

massvmunkee2893d ago

i am a bit confused but here is what i know (btw havent read the books but plan to). halo reach in the books and in the game im assuming involves spartan-I's. master chief however was in a different and advanced program so he is a spartan-II. spartan-III's im assuming is the newest of all the programs, and since the msoft pr said spartan-III's would be in halo reach, that kind of messes up the time line am i right? i would assume the spartan-III program is the newest, but how can they be in reach if it takes place before the events of halo and involves the spartan-I program?

Another One2893d ago (Edited 2893d ago )

No books talk about the Spartan-I program. Yes Master Chief is a Spartasn-II. The Spartan-III program was well underway during Reach so it is not impossible for them to be there. The only reason people say it isn't possible is because there is no mention of Spartan-III's being on Reach in the books. The time line wont necessarily be messed up, people just freak because things might happen on the planet in the game that they don't hear about in the game.

massvmunkee2893d ago

oh okay, i just assumed that the spartan-III program meant more advanced both technologically and in time. now that i know the spartan-III program took place during the time of reach it now seems plausible that spartan-III's can be there.

Another One2893d ago (Edited 2893d ago )

People don't realize that the book was only a very small portion of the battle. There's a lot of things we don't know about the battle for Reach and the Spartan III program. Just because it isn't in the books, doesn't mean it wont happen or didn't happen.
