Top 25 Games of the Decade: #9 - Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence

"What exactly did Subsistence do right? Well, to start off, it included an improved camera and an online multiplayer mode. These two additions, coupled with the updated versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid 2, helped push Subsistence over the edge with longevity.

The addition of online gaming finally gave Metal Gear fans the ability to square off against their friends in capture-the-flag and deathmatch variations. The Metal Gear community responded positively and it was huge success for Kojima to introduce multiplayer to the previously single-player only franchise."

This is one "main" MGS games i have yet to play :(

Darkstorn3138d ago

Sony needs to release the 'MGS Collection' for non-backwards compatible PS3s. Or better yet, the 'MGS Quadrilogy.'

Megaton3138d ago (Edited 3138d ago )

It's really good, still own it myself (the real 2 disc, not the Essentials disc 1). It's hard to say it's the best of the main 4. It's definitely tied for best. I like 1, 3 and 4 a whole lot. The only thing I can really say with certainty on the order of the best MGS titles is that 2 is dead last.

cmrbe3138d ago

play part 3. MGS is incomplete if they don't play MGS3.

@Xiphos. True that. MGS2 is my least fav but even the its still better than 99% of game out.

rockleex3138d ago

1. MGS3: Because it evolved the MGS series in gameplay, storyline, bosses, etc.

2. MGS1: Because it evolved the video game genre as a whole. Two generations ahead of its time.

3. MGS4: Its third because I felt some cutscenes were not needed, but were only there to tie loose knots that didn't really need to be tied. Otherwise, it would tie with MGS1.

4. MGS2: Gameplay was very much the same as MGS1. But storyline is REALLY good... if you can make sense of it all.

Darkstorn3138d ago

I would argue that MGS4 effectively combined all the aspects that made its predecessors great, but that's just me.

I don't think it's wise to rate them individually; instead, we should look at the series as a whole. Can we all agree that it's one of the best video game series out there, if not the best?

solid title and likely the best MGS title

Viewtiful3138d ago

No doubt about it. Amazing game.

Which one of MGS 3 or 4 you like better (I prefer 4 because of the ending) they both should be in the top 25 list of games for this decade.

Darkstorn3138d ago

MGS4 is my personal game of the decade (also because of the ending - I like having everything wrapped up). I think both games belong at least in the 'top 10' games of the decade...

Caspel3137d ago

what's your favorite game of all time?

Darkstorn3137d ago

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, followed closely by the original Diablo.

Subsistence is the BEST MGS game, IMO. Superior to MGS4. Gameplay-wise obviously.

cmrbe3138d ago

but the Derbin points kinda made it too easy for us long time MGS fans. Perhaps i had too much expereince but i still found it easier to clock MGS4 without any alerts compare to previous MGS games.

Its the same case with U2 unfortunately. After playing crushing in U1 all the time, U2 is a piece of cake especially with then new stealth and vertical combat. Even Larsveic i only died once

Sad really. All games are getting dumb down because of these little kids. Thank GOD of Demon Souls.

Dark General3138d ago

Only part that gave me trouble on extreme was the end of act 3 before the boss fight. I nearly broke my DS3 because of how many times I died. Other than that, yeah extreme is pretty easy, specially once you get past act 3. Act 3 is basically the hardest part to get through on extreme without being noticed. I also agree with you on the drebin part, the weapons are cool and all but for a MGS diehard. It made MGS4 way to easy, even If I didn't use it because of how awesome the shock knife is.

cmrbe3138d ago

I only use the tanqulizer and the shock knife. Love them to bits.

Dark General3138d ago

I mostly used those 2 only as well. But I used the Saiga shotgun with the V-Ring non lethal bullets as well. But once I got the sunlight gun that's basically all I ever used.

raztad3138d ago

It's not only the difficulty, although I do agree MGS4 was dumbed down to make it more accessible. MGS3 boss battles > MGS4 battles, at least for me. It's unforgettable that final section when you go guns blazing in your motorbike before to face off The Boss, which btw was an awesome fight.

For my fellow fans

The ending was amazing.

It was like when Darth Vader got his mask in Episode 3 and took his first breath. The birth of a "villain" and the start of a new saga.

There are lots of parallels you can make between MGS and Star Wars

cmrbe3138d ago

I completely understood Big boss after that ending. To me after MGS3. I saw big boss as a victum and not the villian that we always knew.

It was completely gut renching what he has been through and what he did knowingly and unkowningly. I felt like crying with him in that final salute.

Timesplitter143138d ago

Yeah of course I didn't mean he was a villain like Darth Vader.

In fact, I think Big Boss's ideals are better than Snake's

cmrbe3138d ago (Edited 3138d ago )

Thats the funny thing about Soild snake. He dosent really have any ideals like big boss and the other clones. The funny thing even he knows it, lol. As he said, he is no hero as he never strived to be one. He just does what needs to be done. He is much different from Big boss in that regard. However, that is why i always consider solid to be the true hero. In the face of everything he has been through he still remain true to himself. The other almost brought the world to nuclear annilation because of what they believed in due to drastic events that shaped them. Solid on the other hand remain sold.
