Gunaxin writes: "Before the most recent battle between X-Box, the Nintendo Wii, and the Playstation 3, we had their collective predecessors vying for first purchase on the store shelves. Sure, the Nintendo and its myriad re-boots was most often the system to beat, Sega and the original Playstation each had their own combatants in the ring, as well. But it certainly wasn't always the system that came out on top (though by proxy, it was that very system which played the winning games), it was the games themselves. Games, in turn, spawned icons and icons became the characters by which franchises were made, and, sometimes, destroyed."

Get the scoop on Comedy Central's exciting new cartoon show inspired by the iconic Golden Axe video game
Golden Axe is a great game I enjoyed it on the SMS, Genesis and in the arcade. Great game but it truly was a quarter eater back in the day. I wish Sega could get the rights to the arcade port of Moonwalker another great arcade game I enjoyed. Collect so many monkeys and become Robo Michael lol.
No one is more iconic than Mario. Maybe Pac Man?
U cant for get about zelda
I'm surprised snake isn't an icon by now. The game franchise has been around nearly 2 decades.
Nobody has ANY idea who Bill and Lance are. Lols. Come on!
People know who Starfox is.
Note that these characters are from the 80s and 90s, so naturally some of the ones that we think are iconic now weren't so much 10 years ago, or weren't as big at the time.
I also don't like how the author groups together the people... like 'the street fighters' or the 'mortal kombat fighters.' Just pick Ryu or Chun-Li and Subzero or Scorpion, you can't say 15 and list 50 (100 counting FF).
Otherwise, I mostly agree that these guys are all pretty well known. Though I would say Crash/Spyro should be on there too.
