A new feature of games is expansive worlds to transverse. Is it worthwhile to have all this space to explore if the quests/story is relatively lacking?

a compelling story or inciting action is always more important.

take assassins creed II for example, yeah the cities look fantastic and detailed, but if i weren't running around chasing someone, i'd be bored with the environments.

Fallout 3 did a great job in creating an expansive and intricate virtual world
