With the Big Three all hyping new online services for their home consoles, no longer is it all about the games. But Microsoft believes last week's Xbox Live update, coinciding with 360 hitting 10 million sales in Europe, shows "no one can touch" the company's online offering.

And yes, technically they're the only system to show year over year sales growth, but only because of a strong first 3 months of 2009. The three months after that they posted the worst 360 sales in 2 years, the three months after that they also showed a year over year decline.
Nobody can quite beat their chests about nothing like Microsoft. I'm sure it's distracting to 360 owners like myself sitting around wondering why the exclusives dried up, why they're so proud of features no one asked for and why they haven't fixed their damn hardware problems yet. Make with the games already! I haven't seen a 360 game I wanted to play since Fable 2. I miss 2007. Now there was a year to be an Xbox 360 owner.

So lets start talking about live. I have noticed that online games run smoother on the PSN and they have for a while now. Yes live has some cool features that the PSN dose not but they are not worth the yearly rate to me.

Sure that may be true, but there is the other side of that argument as well. 360 just hit its 4 year mark so that means people who have had the system that whole time as dropped an additional $200 to be playing online and to use these additional features. Not only that, but I feel like most of the features that like to brag about seem to be newer additions as well.

I personally don't have an issue paying it myself as I do play online fairly frequently with friends (On both PSN and Live) but I'm starting to feel like that $50 a year is getting harder to justify as both online aspects seem to be closing the gap in their differences.

No, $50 a year or $4+ a month is not that much. But for me and others who laugh at those who pay for the right to play online, it still adds up to $100 after 2 years, or $200 for 4 years. So for all of those original 360 owners you have now PAID AN EXTRA $200 AMERICAN DOLLARS to Microsoft. So your console that at the time was cheaper than the PS3 is NOT CHEAPER than the original cost of the PS3.

I bought my PS3 @ $600, but I have not paid a penny more for the hardware since that day. 360 owners who have Live gold have paid an additional $200 dollars to the original $300 or $400 price tag.

Do the math, and you get either $500 or $600 price that you paid for your 360, it does not matter that it comes in $4+ monthly installments, it STILL ADDS UP. Think of it like a rental place, yes its cheap when u break it down but if you add it up you end up paying FAR MORE for the TV or couch than you would if you just bought it up front.

So Live gold to me is like buying a 360 from a rent-a-center, cheaper up front but in the long run you are paying MORE MORE MORE.

LIVE has been around for seven years. It has time to grow and evolve. Microsoft is the obvious #1 in this area. We should expect this; it is Microsoft after all.

Still the praise is excessive. Additional features like SkyTV and Netflix are ubiquitous in consumer electronics today (i.e., media center PCs). Microsoft doesn't own these features. The companies providing the content do, making it fair game for Sony.

Sony is king of content with Sony Pictures and Sony Music. Sony is already thinking of ways of extending beyond PSN onto its own TVs and Blu-ray players. So it appears something big is planned. I'm interested in what the subscription service is too.

For a premium service where it's main focus is Online gaming, Microsoft must invest in dedicated servers for (at least) their most anticipated games on the platform. It is a disgrace that a free service like PSN has more dedicated servers offered on some of it's games than Live. But regardless, this so called innovation that MS brought to the console world with the 360, was already mostly done by Sega. Of course technology changes and methods are refined, and now online implementation is much better than what it was then, but my point still stands.

I have both systems but don't pay for live, I mean i know 50 a year isn't much but what does 50 get me exactly? I've used live and liked how everything works together but I don't see it leaps and bound better than psn, so those 50 dollars don't justify when I can play on psn. Mass Effect has sold but 2 mill, L4D 2.5, PGR4 1.8.

Most PS3 titles sell those exact numers, just because Halo 3, Gears 1+2 and Forza 2 sold more than 4 million doesn't mean the PS3 titles don't sell. Especially conidering that there have been more anticipated games this year for the PS3 alone than any year before.

And considering that I have been playing Uncharted 2, Demon Souls, R&C ACIT, Killzone 2, Infamous and soon the God of War collection. And thats on top of the multiplats :) Then we have next year starting off with Heavy Rain & MAG then GoW III, The Last Guardian, GT5, White Knight Chronicles, ModNationRacers and more. Now give me your list and btw I own a 360 too so I'll be getting the best of both worlds jackass :)

until gaming online is free on XBL it's a POS service. I will only buy games on a console that I am allowed to enjoy the full game at no extra cost. Even with the premium service Sony is still allowing people to play their games online for free the way it should be.

Live has the edge and MS keeps that edge but PSN is starting to catch up in features, even if some of those features have been on the 360 for 4 years. Once Sony starts charging for premium service they will have the money to go toe to toe with Live and it wll be a true online battle. Right now PSN is behind but it's free and you can't argue with free. I can't wait to see a Sony vs MS premium service punch out.

MS has been doing the online thing for a lot longer than Sony though. Sony did cover a lot of ground since the release of the PS3 in terms of their online features. MS will always keep their edge though in some way, regardless of how many trivial features they stamp on to their service. - Xbox Live is 7 years old and PSN is only 3 years old and PSN is considered to be only a few months behind XBL.

First Xbox just gave you online gaming it wasn't untill this generation that all these new features were added. So... it's more like this gens Xbox Live is 4yrs old and PSN is 3yrs old and PSN is just now getting cross game chat.

It's the fact of the matter that MS had a full gaming generation in order to get their XBL to the point they wanted. Sony never have been a company with "Online Thinking" as are most Japanese companies, look at the state of Nintendo's stagnating online structure. The fact of the matter that MS has way more past experience in how to implement online features with all the experience they gained working with developers and third party publishers over the years, Sony on the other hand has just got into the online gaming business with the PS3.

When you get right down to it and remove all the bells and whistles and look at MS as a whole then you'll see just how cripple that giant is. About the only thing that is working for MS from an online perspective is XBL but that has a lot to do with the fact that they charge money for online gaming, Google and Apple are still years a head of them. Everyone here knows exactly how successful that plan was when they tried pulling that crap with PC gamers, Games For Windows - Live anyone?

I think Microsoft is overrated. In my own personal experience (having owned both the 360 and the PS3) I feel that there is only a marginal difference between the quality of the 360's service and the free PS3 service. I sold both of my systems, but when I -do- buy back a console, it surely won't be the 360. It's too costly and there's just too much wrong with it.

The system itself is unreliable, you never know when it'll break down. It costs $60 a year for service that is only marginally better than the PS3, not to mention you have to shell out additional money for batteries and other add-ons as well. I'm not saying that I can't afford the $60, but I would much rather use that money to buy a new game than to pay for an online service. Goodbye, Microsoft.
