3D Realms Van Lierop Curses Out Xbox Live Achievements

Van Lierop Curses Out Xbox Live Achievements

- Here's a thought-provoking discussion - over on the IGDA forums, Raphael Van Lierop (formerly at Relic, now working for 3D Realms) has been discussing Xbox Live Achievements, and he offers a very contrary view to a lot of enthusiasts of the system - simonc of GSW included.

Lierop concedes: "I have many friends who LOVE achievements. They love the bragging rights, they love being able to compare achievements they obtained to other people, they love the idea of continuously revisiting a game in order to collect every last little achievement no matter how mundane or tiny or ridiculous or how far out of the realm or 'normal' gameplay they are required to go to obtain it."

But he suggests: "Personally, I dislike them...a lot. I find they are changing the way we play games, and the focus of the games we play, and make. I feel that games should be crafted to have enough intrinsic reward, that a secondary external reward system should not be required... was it really necessary for us to go back to the old 'High Score' system from the days of arcade games? I would have hoped that the gameplay and immersiveness of the 'next gen' gaming experience would have been enough reward, and that we wouldn't have had to fall back on cheap gimmicks."

This is a pretty interesting point of view, and simonc don't totally disagree with it - he have been known to do some pretty stupid things in Xbox 360 games just in order to get 10 Achievement Points - often things that aren't really the point of the game. But if it's enjoyable, and you can still play the game as originally intended and get points for that - who's really hurt?

ummm.... i dont mind achievements, it makes you wanna get all of them so you can actually say "i have completed this game" rather then "i have completed the missions" etc. there not important and your not going to get anything from getting them, except feeling that you are doing well and shouldnt stop playing it when you get stuck etc.

I just think his arguement is "flawed" only because he says he hates achievements because next gen gaming should be immersive enough without "cheap gimmicks". -Well its only and option so if you don't like them just play the game, you will get some just by playing through the game and the others are optional, but it can't hurt to have this "option" in a game.

I mean lets take your favorite game whatever that might be and add achievements to it.....they don't change the core gameplay experience at all, only thing is that now "IF" you CHOOSE to, you can go back and play certain area's of the game to find or do something you didn't pick up before.....thats all it really is.....and honestly M$ just took something that alot of gamers do anyway and made it a option to get points(achievements) because Gamers have always went back and exploring, or looking for missing items, or discovering hidden secrets, etc. after they have successfully beaten a game.

-Just think of it as an "extra" incentive, so if the game is not immersive enough you can't blame that on achievements (dev's fault)....I don't understand how adding extra incentive to a game can ruin it and personally it depends on the game whether or not I seek out all the achievements, I could care less what somebody thinks of my gamerscore....if its a cool achievement thats worth my time then I'll try to get it, if its not then who cares. Its not like I'm getting paid, its suppose to be fun so just enjoy the game you paid for anyway you want.

Well... they can create their achievements to work in the way that rewards players for playing their game normally... problem solved.

You are so right. It's the Developers that take the gamers into the direction of where they want to lead us with achievements. This guy just want's somethng to disagree with just to disagree. haha He's lame, and not to bright.

It seems that he's just whining more than any thing else, it sounds like all he really is complaining about is coming up with achievements and putting them into his games. When did that want of a High Score system from the arcade days ever go away? I've always competed for high score with my friends or highest level when it comes to RPG type games. Is he really that out of touch with his fanbase that he thinks people don't like to compare high scores any more?
