Virgins AWOMO service will make PS3 Home look prehistoric

The boss of Virgin's new digital download site A World Of My Own (AWOMO) believes that the venture can outclass Sony's much-lauded PS3 Home project. Users were invited to register for the Beta of the site this week.

And now AWOMO?creator Games Domain International has told MCV that the download speed of the site will put next-gen consoles to shame – and that it can reach half a million subscribers this year.

"We have had a few emails from people who have already registered and are impressed that we seem to have pulled off a 'me too' model of PS3 Home for PC. But they will have to wait and see how good this will get. In terms of download speed, Home is very much what we have got used to in the 21st Century. AWOMO will make that look prehistoric."

this is comparing what they have made so far compared to home for PS3. there isnt anything i can find which makes me think this is coming to PS3

Who cares and why is this news? I'm sure that you can't instantly jump into a multiplayer game from this virgin's AWOMO. Stop comparing things that aren't even available to the public yet!

HOME is a community service that's all. Its a game-service, not a game
in itself. Yes you can play a great number of arcade games, snooker
and maybe bowling it there but its just not about competition. So,
HOME's appeal just can not be denied as a full-on "next-gen online"
service.

HOME's edge will be Sony's great influence on market and their
inter-relations with all the movie studios and game-devs. This means
exclusive and unbreakable chain of content supply. I don't see Virgin
getting all that support and attenion. Virgin's world might kill
second-life but HOME is an integration and extention of PS3 itself !!!

There's a lot people who saw home and right away wanted to get a ps3, they considered it not becuase of the upcoming games but simply for the home community idea and the fact that it looks prettier and that other popular mmo out there.

I highly doubt people are going to buy a PS3 just for the community aspect. Communities are build around similar interests. For HOME that would be PS3 gaming and the PSN.

Further more to compare HOME to a MMO is just crazy talk. They are not even in the same ball park. HOME is a 3D interface for the PSN not a game.

Virin saying their AWOMO service will make PS3 Home look prehistoric is hype at this point. One is an exclusive service for PS3 owners with no competition. Just as XBL is an exlusive service for Xbox owners. AWOMO is a PC based service that will have to compete with many other PC type services as the PC world is much more open and competative. The entire reason he probably said it was because they know what kind of a buzz that HOME is getting and by comparing it he hopes to capture some of that buzz for what they are doing.

Home is a gateway to Multiplayer games, video, mini-games, trophies. AWOMO is a gateway to what? Is this just Virtual Instant Messaging? Home has a purpose, what purpose does AWOMO serve?

I'm sure it will serve PC gamers well but I don't think that Home is competing against this, World of War Craft, or Starcraft 2. Like VG said, its a service, not a game.

People aren't going to deterr from their thousands of available internet activities for this. Of course, it might reach a couple million users tops, so? It's not gonna be the next WoW.

Home on the other hand is pretty much one of the only services (and most important things) available solely for PS3 users, availble directly from your PS3. With at least 20 million PS3s sold in its life span (and that's being pesimistic), Home will have at least 10 million Home Avatars.

The DS is kind of prehistoric in terms of almost everything, and look how it does almost everything. It does because there's an important marketshare. So AWOMO won't really be the shiit if it doesn't have enough marketshare, and I doubt it will.
