New 'Call of Duty' could set entertainment record

This holiday season's biggest entertainment blockbuster likely will be a sequel to a popular franchise, with jarring depictions of war and an intricate story of good versus evil. It could easily rake in more than last year's record $155 million opening weekend for "The Dark Knight."

i think the difference between this game and halo is, halo was able to appeal to both the hardcore and a major portion of the casual gaming market through HUGE advertising budget from Microsft. MW2 will probably have a larger hardcore audience purchasing the game and the fact that PS3+360+PC helps. I have yet to see any sort of adverts for this game (in Canada at least). This game will sell more day one than halo but in terms of hype and media penetration, it wont come close. There were newcasts covering the midnight release of halo3 back in the day, that how much hype there was about the game.

Halo 3 has sold 10 million, COD4:MW has sold 13 million.

Halo achieved these sales because it was already an established IP with absolutely huge advertising behind it. Modern Warfare was not an established franchise and had very minimal advertising push behind it.

I have seen advertisements for MW2 ... many. So now that Activision is thoroughly pushing MW2, I really think MW2 will easily set the entertainment record ... EASILY!

But time will tell, so i'm going to just leave it at that.

In regards to your media penetration comment, I think it will explode after it's released and sales data starts trickling to the media. Current hype for the game by all *gamers* is massive though.

It's not even out yet and I'm already getting tired of seeing/hearing about it, lol. I mean we've seen video's of it, glitchers already going behind the map game play, etc. Just enough to see all that it has to offer. Then something like BFBC2 comes along and you go Oh!!!! What's this???? Then you see it's multi player video and just go WWWwwwwoooooow!!!! Now that's something to drool over. Really, have you seen it? I mean come on now, that is just epic level of battle fighting. I'm so going for that Beta.
