Q&A: Planet Calypso's 'Treasure Island' owner David Storey

The Good Gear Guide interviews David Storey, the Planet Calypso player who purchased a 'virtual island' for US$26,500.

Chris Jager writes: "In 2004, Australian gamer David Storey made headlines around the world when he purchased a virtual island in the online game Planet Calypso for a cool US$26,500. At the time, it was the highest price that had ever been paid for a virtual item. In the intervening years, Storey has turned Treasure Island into a thriving community with an estimated value of over US$100,000. What's most amazing is that at the time of its purchase, Story was just 22.

It sounds like the plot to a William Gibson-esque cyberpunk novel, doesn't it? Well, we met up with David at the Melbourne eGames Expo 2009 and found him to be a normal everyday gamer. We quizzed Storey (AKA Zachurm 'Deathifier' Emegen) about Planet Calypso, Treasure Island and the ebb-and-flow of virtual economies. Here's what he had to say..."
