Opinion: 'Time for PS3 to Shine,' Xbox 360 Could Fall to 'Distant Third'

GameDaily: On September 1, 2009, we finally got it: a new PlayStation 3 priced at $299 (€299, £249, ¥29980). Of course, the impact was immediate with PlayStation 3 September sales for the first time beating both the Wii and Xbox 360 in the U.S. However, the big question is now that the price has come down to earth can the PlayStation 3 live up to its true potential in both the holiday 2009 season and going into 2010?

Since its launch in 2006, the PlayStation 3 had been a big, intimidating piece of equipment with a price tag to match. At a launch price of $600, the PlayStation 3 was simply out of the price range of all but the most dedicated video game player. Now at a slimmed down $300, the PlayStation 3 is priced to appeal to the masses. This could be the time for the system to shine.

Kindly replace "could" with "will" in the title. Thanks.

chrisulloa3328d ago

Lol yes because a 1 year headstart and 2 years in ahead of PS3 doesn't mean anything.

abc12333328d ago

no, but the recent sales figures of the ps3 along with the price drop and awesome exclusive releases makes a bit of a difference :P

For the same time frame the PS3 has sold more consoles than the 360, and doing this with mostly new IPs driving the sales and at a higher price point at that. With Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls, and FF13 releasing exclusively at Japan for the PS3, the PS3 is sure to win this Holiday. Thus giving the PS3 the momentum going forward to 2010 where its biggest IPs Gran Turismo and God of War lies waiting.

Expect the PS3 to outsold the 360 from hereon out.

I really dont see what MS can do to stop sony now. Especially as how the ps3 exclusives just keep pouring in. The ps3 struggled since launch, but now is its turn to shine. Lets see what MS is really made of, and if they can pull off what sony did. Personally, I dont think they can. But thats just me...

NaiNaiNai3327d ago

Higher price point.

WTF just 2 weeks ago you guys were saying the 360 cost more

XBL, WIFI, Batteries, you even went as far as throwing in HD-DVD players.

LMFAO the way ps3 owners spin is so great.

ultimolu3327d ago

Yes NaiNaiNai we understand. ^__^

Saaking3327d ago

The Wii already is far ahead. PS3 will sell over 100 million consoles when all is said and done. The PS1 and PS2 took off around their fourth year and the PS3 is three years old already. Sony knows what they're doing and MS WILL be in Third.

Microsoft Xbox 3603327d ago

It was inevitable. The 360 does not have much to offer besides Facebook-like apps anymore.

Cold 20003327d ago (Edited 3327d ago )

Now were getting "360 is doomed" articles galore.

Once the 360 gets back some momentum it will be "PS3 is doomed" back again and vice versa. Its a never ending cycle.

The very same media that all the PS3 fanboys were cursing at has been kissing up to Sony since the price cut.

The media just follows the trend. But of course you will say no that aint true its just that"they've seen the light!!!!" lol.

Mark my words, this wont last more than a year. Its been like that since 2007.

The BS Police3327d ago

I can't see the PS3 acheiving the 100 million unit mark anytime soon. The PS2 only acheived that because it was released at the right time, and at the right price, it also had the luxury of being a DVD player aswell (VHS was on it's way out a few years later). The only console this gen I can see getting anywhere near the 100 million mark is the Wii.

HolyOrangeCows3327d ago (Edited 3327d ago )

"Sir, it's not pushing hardware anymore!!"

"Dear God......what do we do now?!?!???"

@1.7
No, this article is predicting that the Xbox will fall behind in sales, unlike the "PS3 is teh d00med" articles where these geniuses predicted the complete bankruptcy of the Sony corporation based on it's playstation division.

Eddie201013327d ago

PS3 never struggled to begin with. PS3 sold more consoles in the same amount of time (each consoles first 3 years). The lead that Microsoft has is only in the U.S really and that's because of the year head start they had. Who knows how much of that is from buying Multiple consoles because of its High failure rate. The amount they had for the extra year on the market without any competition is slowly being widdled away.

They never even got close to the ten million console lead they bragged they would have before the PS3 and Wii were released. I know the Xbox 360 has a high attach rate with games but so did the Xbox and we know how that sold. The PS3's attach rate is quickly catching up to the Xbox 360's and is not far from being nearly the same.

But with the stellar new ip's and still free psn, plus the other huge gambles sony took, the ps3 does appear to be the choice of hardware to do "everything" on! My favorite part in the article- Since its launch in 2006, the PlayStation 3 had been a big, intimidating piece of equipment with a price tag to match.- makes me feel good to know I had the stones to jump in at launch after researching the ps3 and 360 to death! Still want a 360, just haven't got one yet.

DS363328d ago

SpartanZero3327d ago

Im sorry but 360 games and xbox live appeal more to the consumers.

ultimolu3327d ago

...Only in the delusional world of xtards.

ambientFLIER3327d ago

I'd say the sales trends for the consoles and the software pretty much proves that the xbox is a favorite.

Nice to see you're still trolling, juken.

Cuzzo633327d ago
