Sony is set to release its most innovative display technology this year. With a screen thickness of well under 5mm thick, but, boasting an astounding 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio (yes you read that right, one million to one), this is sure to be a benchmark for the display industry.
The technology behind it is a combination of TFT (thin film transistor) and OEL (organic electroluminescent) which are both established technologies used in a wide range of devices. This display is so thin that it can be bent by the human hand, yet it will not break. Commercial uses for this display are still undecided but according to Sony spokesman, Chisato Kitsukawa, "In the future, it could get wrapped around a lamppost or a person's wrist, even worn as clothing, or perhaps it can be put up like wallpaper." There are some obvious hurdles to overcome such as ensuring durablilty, cost and increasing size. This is sure to turn more heads when released so look forward to an update as more information become available.
