Outside of a handful of boss battles and optional special dungeons, you're rarely in jeopardy -- and even when you do lose, the penalties are fairly light. On the other hand, it fails to capture the appeal of the core Pokémon games, which is about winning battles by relying on the teamwork of your adorable animal slaves. Here you play as a Pokémon and build a team of (potentially) hundreds of others, but the action all happens at something of a remove, and you only have direct control over your protagonist. The overall effect is that you feel more like an observer to the action than a participant."
