Netflix: PS3 disc must remain in system until 2010 update; and other answers to your pressing questions

Netflix was kind enough to answer a heap of nitpicky questions following the announcement that its steaming service would soon be available for PlayStation 3. Certainly, question marks hovered over the application "disc" and whether or not it would have to always be in the PS3 to use the Netflix streaming service

The story is too old to be commented.
LukaX232949d ago

Well, 2010 isn't that far away. I can wait.

prabx2949d ago

Ye the rep said it should be embedded into the PS3 by late next year via system update, so no worries.

Parapraxis2949d ago

Better than having to Queue up your choices on a PC, then go back to your console.

pharmd2949d ago

yeah.... im definitely going to go back to netflix when this is available, but i'll probably wait til the disc inconvenience is resolved...

but 2010 is better than never...

chaosatom2949d ago (Edited 2949d ago )

Netflix signed an agreement with MS, so they now have to do a roundabout way of getting netflix on PS3.

edit: well ok, it's also Netflix's fault for signing the agreement.

mint royale2949d ago

If an asteroid wiped out civilisation tomorrow I'm sure it will go down as MS's fault!

kevoncox2949d ago

This is my only issues with the PS3. Everything seems to be released unfinished. Home, OS, Netflix, PSN etc. It's just always a work in progress.

Erotic Sheep2949d ago

I'm pretty sure the OS of the PS3 was pretty good to go at launch. Just because it's getting updated doesn't mean its unfinished. Same can be said about the Xbox Dashboard then. And about Home.. u never heard of betas have you?

rockleex2949d ago

While Microsoft already had the original Xbox Live features to expand upon.

Sony did a pretty good job in such a short amount of time, all while charging its users ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

2949d ago
iamtehpwn2949d ago

A disc isn't the best, but it's coming really soon to the Ps3 firmware anyway. Besides, the disc is free.

MEsoJD2949d ago

thats an extreme annoyance. I'll wait for the embedded option.

WenisWagon2949d ago

This clearly proves that when it comes to home entertainment, the Xbox 360 is the superior platform.

odisho682949d ago (Edited 2949d ago )

lol this really makes me regret purchasing a 360 at all...XBL is awesome but now what am i exactly paying 50 bucks a year for is what i'm wondering...basically all the same features and convenience factors are included in PSN and you can actually browse the internet and you don't have to pay for a service that should be included when you purchase the console (until you go to justin.tv and watch sports games that aren't broadcasted on live tv on your big screen you haven't experienced a total media experience like MS suggests about the 360 btw).

Sure the 360 exclusives are cool and the sheer amount of ppl online playing a game far exceeds that of my ps3 games, but 99% of games are available for both consoles as multiplatform titles and even xbox fanboys have to admit that PSN is basically about to surpass XBL when the next major update occurs. I would've never thought that MS would not do anything possible to stick exclusively with Netflix, this is really becoming sad for fans of XBL because the amount of benefits the service has compared to PSN are becoming less and less as the months go by. The term exclusivity has been thrown out the window this generation (at least in regards to MS).

thebudgetgamer2949d ago

at the same time ive really enjoyed watching the progression of the ps3. the ps3 i writing this on now is nothing like the ps3 i bought almost two years ago.

sikbeta2949d ago

Kid, you know how to read, or your mom is helping you

"The Netflix agreement with Sony for PS3 is consistent with the terms of our partnership with Microsoft for Xbox 360"

"Instant streaming disc represented the fastest and easiest way to let PS3 enthusiasts get Netflix on the PS3. Late next year we expect to have an embedded solution available for PS3s via a system software update slated for release through the PlayStation Network"

Now you understand

JsonHenry2949d ago

I don't understand why having to put a disc in the tray is such a big deal to stream netflix on your PS3.. Just like on the opposite side of the coin, I don't understand why swapping discs to play a large game is such a big deal for 360/Wii owners.

If inserting a disc into a tray is so hard for you, you might as well kill yourself and do the rest of the world a favor you pathetic, lazy, crotchity bum! :)

Sitdown2949d ago

"crotchity"

Hahaha!!!!

@chaosatom
Wow....I think you have officially won Anti-Microsoft Comment of the Day.

4Sh0w2949d ago (Edited 2949d ago )

"Again, late next year we expect to have an embedded solution available for PS3s via a system software update slated for release through the PlayStation Network."

but why late next year, I mean I'm sure plans have been in the works to bring Netflix to ps3 every since it went on 360 so why not have the embed feature available at launch, doesn't seem like its something that should be a seperate update late next year.

dustgavin2949d ago

You mean Hd-dvd??

http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-...

360 is a tired system with more attachments than the Sega Genesis.
Genesis: Sega Cd add-on
360: Hd-Dvd

Genesis:32x
360:Natal

Face it, 360 is an inferior console on it's way out the door.

oohWii2949d ago (Edited 2949d ago )

Because everything that has to be coded for the PS3 takes forever. Even with the help of Sony Devs. Notice how it's been said that Sony is now kissing up to valve to help them with the PS3...haha, Now netflix need help to code a simple movie streaming applet.

tsk tsk, those boys at Sony have been working over time copying every idea that Microsoft and Nintendo has come up with. People are always saying Microsoft doesn't haven't an original creative bone in their bodies, however this is the most true for Sony.

Notice the only updates PSN is getting is updates to copy something on XBL. But they have to do this, if they don't their fanboys will burn down the headquarters...lol

jaysquared2949d ago

"Considering Sony had to create everything for PSN this generation...
While Microsoft already had the original Xbox Live features to expand upon.

Sony did a pretty good job in such a short amount of time, all while charging its users ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. "

It isn't that hard when all they had to do was copy what Microsoft and what everybody else was doing.. Achievements, Movie marketplace, in game XMB, in game messaging, Netflix streaming, Home(2nd life), online play.. All the updates that Sony has implemented to the PS3 has already been done and they really haven't brought anything new this generation.. Well actually i'll give them credit for mandatory install..

frostypants2949d ago (Edited 2949d ago )

LOL at: "Is releasing the PS3 application on a disc required by an exclusivity agreement with Microsoft?

The Netflix agreement with Sony for PS3 is consistent with the terms of our partnership with Microsoft for Xbox 360."

Translation: YES, it's because of the agreement with MS.

I like Netflix as a company, but good lord, just ANSWER THE QUESTION STRAIGHT.

@1.17: Read between the lines. They don't answer that question directly, but they ARE asked directly. It's because of Microsoft. The PR guy is just pandering to MS and the Netflix legal department.

TruEve2948d ago (Edited 2948d ago )

Having to use a disc is not an annoyance to me at all. I mean, for a year, this will be the only "handicap" for the service on PS3. 360 users (including myself) had to queue movies on a computer before watching. I didn't find that annoying personally, but it was indeed a problem for a lot of people, one which was resolved a *year* later...Not to mention the persisting barrier of requiring XBL Gold...

---

To those complaining:
If you already have a Netflix membership (or even plan on getting one), just sign in to the Netflix website and go to www.netflix.com/ps3. It's just one click and they automatically ship it to your address (for free). I had a harder time adding Blu-ray as my disc preference!

Hmm, I wonder if you have issue with browsing for movies on the site and adding them to your queue? I wonder if you have issue with waiting for Blu-rays/ DVDs in the mail, and subsequently inserting them into your system every time you want to watch a movie? How about when you want to play a multiplayer game?

---

This was just a friendly rant not directed toward any specific poster. Just wanted to get that off of my chest :). I don't find this to be a problem and its a clever *temporary* workaround of the deal with MS.

SL1M DADDY2948d ago

And how many updates has the Xbox 360 dash had? What console had a complete remake of the dashboard? Who was it that had a full week of online downtime over the holidays a couple years back? Who uses kid like Mii's instead of a full virtual world of avatars for social meeting? Come on, MS does the same stuff. Just because it is not up to your standards, does not mean that it is not finished.

Ashby_JC2948d ago

Hmm I like how you just made up stuff. The 360 gets like 3-4 updates per year and we usually know about them in advance instead of guessing what the update will include.

The NXE as it was called was a complete makeover for the dashboard and was a welcomed makeover I might add from the previous dash.

Way to stretch out downtime that wa sactually less then a day into a FREAKIN WEEK!!! Xbox live has NEVER been down for more then 24 hours!!!

And I wont defend the avatars as they were a rip off of the Mis.
But what company doesnt COPY. They ALL copy each other. MS copies Sony and Vice versa. (THATS A FACT)

Quadrostacker2948d ago

After reading most comments here on n4g im starting to believe M$ is SKYNET

HolyOrangeCows2948d ago

Are you sure you had an Xbox360 the first week of 2008?

Because I remember LIVE being practically down for the first week of 2008. It was bad.

The 12948d ago (Edited 2948d ago )

LOL at this tacked on BS. I doubt this will have the same functionality as XBL. I don't blame Netflix for doing this MSFT screwed Netflix over with Zune market place and not just on XBL but DD in general.

Also Iv'e read PS3 fans spreading BS lies about the queue set-up on XBL saying we have to queue up content on the PC, total BS.

the netflix guy sounds kind of mad or annoyed. does anyone agree?
lol watch ps3 will soon get twitter and probably even more like tumblr or flickr

ottoman_2392949d ago

PS3 has twitter already its on the web browser.

Premonition2949d ago

I have the twitter feature on for uncharted 2 but for some reason its not twitting.

LittleBigSackBoy2949d ago

they disabled it for a few weeks because it was messing twitter up.

frostypants2949d ago (Edited 2949d ago )

No, it's just clear that the answers had to be cleared first. These are sanitized, pre-planned/memorized responses. He wants to say "yes, the disc is because of the time remaining on our MS agreement, now leave me alone", but he is not allowed to.

Once again, read between the lines.

Sony would obviously cram this into a firmware update ASAP if they were allowed to. That's not a big hurdle.

There is no TECHNICAL reason not to put this on a disc instead of the hard drive sooner than late 2010...that's ludicrous. Software of this degree doesn't care about storage medium...if anything the hard disk is always preferable for performance reasons. Netflix won't ever deny this...but they will simply speak in vagaries if explicitly asked for the true reason, like they did in this interview. The reluctance to answer the question directly is an implicit "affirmative". It's classic corporate-political speak.

It's undeniably, irrefutably due to the license w/ MS. End of story. Book it. Done.

The 12948d ago

Zune Marketplace leading the way on all platforms and or devices/companies.

Similar to inserting your favorite Blu-Ray movie, Netflix will allow you to watch unlimited movies at the same low cost of 8.99. Furthermore, you have the convenience and peace of mind knowing that you will not need to pay any other subscription fees to simply unlock another. Xbox Live has swindled consumers for far too long and Dark Sniper is ecstatic to see that Netflix has finally taken a stand.

Only PlayStation®3 provides you the most unique, and immersive form of entertainment. With it's Blu-Ray capabilities combined with Netflix, there's no reason for you to explore any other options when it comes to high definition cinema enjoyment. Dark Sniper can boldly assure you that Xbox 360's demise is near and authentic.

In the end, Dark Sniper would much rather insert a disc in the same way he would a movie for unlimited movie watching at only 8.99. It surely beats paying 50.00 more for the same service and dealing with the inconvenience of switching discs in order to play a simple racing game or an RPG.

$niper
