Up until the PS3's launch on 23 March, HD DVD was comfortably outselling Blu-ray discs. However, in the week after PS3 was launched in Europe, Blu-ray discs accounted for almost 87% of all HD disc sales.
Well thats kinda obvious.
BD needs the PS3 to survive.
Good news though
cool keep it up sony
here is a little secret that would boost sales for both formats...more people with hd tv's.
i know i need one.
just got my HDREADY TV on the 27th April! its amazing playing my games in HD! =)
Why do you think Sony pushed their system out so soon without any amount of decent games? Because they knew that with the absence of games hardcore buyers would have no other choice than to buy blu-ray movies if they wished to make use of their new purchase...and thus creating the initial surge to keep studios in their pocket. It would be interesting to see how this race would be going right now if all the studios supported both formats. Just give it a bit when PS3 games start to make it to market. The PS3 gamer will be spending more money on games than they will movies. Then the market will depend more on the dedicated players for sales numbers.
Is because it takes time for developers to make games. Sony really wanted to have the greatest launch line up ever.
"There's no new games because Sony just wants to force their unproven DVD format onto us." Then again, once Final Fantasy X and Metal Gear Solid 2 were released, they sort of shut up about that.
... but i guess dearth of games was a good thing for sony because they started buying blu-ray movies. q:
we all knew this was going to be the case with the ps3 but i wonder if microsoft had the hd-dvd drive built in the xbox 360 from the begining and used that format for games if hd-dvd would be outselling bluray
wow, thats something we dont know........
Yeah, why post this? Its nothing new at all.
yeh i know.
I just bought the drive for my 360 and it plays beautiful in 1080i! HD DVD want to sell more?? Drop the price of your players and you will cream BR.
HD-DVD actually ge3ts more then one movie a month.
They do get HEROES in August though. That hurts.
ONly if they get more then 1 movie or tv series a month. It would actually sell. HD-DVD is going to fail sooner or later, if buena vista, fox, and sony stay supporters exclusively to blu ray.
How about the Matrix trilogy, complete set and ultimate set! Can I get whoop whoop!
Anyway,If HD DVD fails then Ill just get a PS3. A BlueRay player that plays videogames! How cool is that!
Makes sense. Only one of the many reasons I purchased mine. + Blu-Ray movies are generally cheaper than there HD-DVD counterparts.
This is so stupid. I hate these kinds of stories. Blu-Ray this, HD-DVD that. And on a gaming site no less. Truth is, there are more DVD players sold in 2007, than the total sales of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray movies put together for 2007. What does that tell you? Maybe that High Def formats are not as important as you all like to think. I thought this was news for gamers, not AVS forum.
This will probably go on for the next 2 or 3 freaking years and then once a winner is named they still have to take down the almighty DVD. You can buy a DVD player NEW for $20, now thats a big difference than $200 to $600. Even if they get the price down for these next gen disc formats they then have to convince the rest of the world why they should give up a perfectly good DVD format. COST COST COST thats what its always about just look at the Wii and PS2, most people in this world are broke and live on tight budgets. That is why DVD will stay the champ for many more years to come.
ps3 isn't giving Blu Ray disc's a boost, that's the only sales it's getting period, is from ps3, atleast 90% anyway's, I mean who the hell has/owns an indipendent BR player? Basically nobody. Truth be told.
Then again, the Blu-ray entertainment theaters I see set up at electronics stores (Best Buy and Circuit City specifically) indicate that context doesn't matter. If Product A sells better than Product B, retailers will put most of their focus on Product A. It doesn't matter if PS3 is the main reason that Product A is winning.
*I have yet to see an HD-DVD Home Theater setup at these places, and the Blu-ray aisle has 2~3 times more titles to select from.
ok i dont think anyone thinks this is actually news... do they?
bluray is nothing without the ps3 and when the ps3 has the games it will be forgoten
Blu-ray is much better tha HD-DVD. Its not really anything technical, its just the disk size. I think people, especially those who have been around from beta vs. vhs who have changed formats many times, are making educated decisions, which wasn't the case before. They always went for the cheaper. But for me, i don;t see why they came out with hd-dvd in the first place. Its only twice as big as dual layer dvds. I forget the source, but for a movie thats 1080p, 7.1 ss. anything over 2 hours doesn't fit on one hd dvd. So either you lower the quality, or you divide the movie in multiple disks. While these things aren't horrible compromises, they are a slap in the face for anyone who invests in one. You just spend X amount of money, and your already coming short.
"Here, Bob, let's watch LOTR on hd-dvd. I'll have to chaneg the disk 3 times though"
And also, regardless of movie formats, PC's are another issue. Here disk size means everything when upgraded your drive.
I am by no means a Sony whore, but from a consumer standpoint, I'd pay more for a 5x bigger drive which will fit my entire 1080p movie with extra features than investing something that is only 2x the current format and I'd either get only 720p or changing disks half way.
I do own a ps3 and I do see it as both a blu-ray player and a gaming console. While some might complain that they just what the gaming console without extra price, I'm sure that these are the same people who don't own large hdtvs. I'm a proud owner of a 42" plasma tv and I feel like blu-ray is a great add on for the ps3 and even if they had a version withou blu-ray, I'd pay the small extra for the drive.
Besides the PS3, Blu Ray stand alones are selling horrible. HD DVD is out selling 5-1 standalones. That # might even be low. HD DVD isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Trust me. Remember BETA was selling great too.. What happened???? VHS Won... Same thing here. HD DVD and Blu Ray will both be around for a long time to come. Also HD is cheaper. HD can hold alot of sh!t on a disc too. Disc space isn't what its gonna come down to. Its like the 360 vs. ps3..Price is going to win. HD quality is the same as blu ray so why would I pay 900$ for blu Ray when I could get HD DVD for 300$????? My point exactly. HD is outselling Blu Ray 5-1 or even 10-1. Ask anyone at Best Buy or any elctronic store they will tell you. Blu ray is only selling in the PS3!!
A whole lot of people are buying the PS3 t use as their blu-ray player. Why in the world would anyone (like me) who wants a bl-ray player and a ps3, buy both a stand alone player and a ps3 when you can get both for a lower price in one powerful and quiet unit. For that matter, even if I wasnt interested in the ps3 to play games I would still buy the PS3 as my stand alone players since its a great player with extras like online ability and a harddrive for my videos and pics and mem card slots, ect for a lower price. So you really have to count PS3 in with the Blu-ray stand alones.
The only thing hd-dvd has going for it is its cheap players. And they are just that... CHEAP. Cheaply made and cheaply sold. Hd-dvd's on the whole are higher priced than Blu-ray's, and Blu-ray is superior in every way. The reason beta failed is that it had no support from the industry except Sony. Blu-ray on the other hand has alot more support than hd-dvd. The 22nd of this month has Pirates 1 and 2 and Apocalypto coming exclusive to Blu-ray
'The Chronicles of Narnia' is also coming to Blu-ray exclusively either late summer or early autumn. A highly anticipated title from the studio, 'The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe' will surely receive the same two disc treatment that the Pirates films have, including special features only found on Blu-ray.
Expect all 4 titles to have a huge impact on sales for Blu-ray movies. Consider all the other Disney titles that will be exclusive to Blu-ray. Oh and Spiderman 1,2 and 3 all Bu-ray exclusives. Not to mention what 20th Century Fox has lined up for Blu-ray exclusively. What does hd-dvd have? Universal and... oh wait, thats it for exclusives. I give hd-dvd till the end of this year then Universal will switch to both and then hd-dvd will be history.
