Sony may have been "overly ambitious", warns Pachter

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has warned that Sony will have to make difficult decisions regarding the PS3's price point if sales of the console are to improve.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz Pachter said, "I think Sony's strategy of including a Blu-ray drive and a microprocessor that will stand up to ten more years of technological advances may have been overly ambitious - given that they have so far asked consumers to pay for the high definition movie option and to help finance development of the Cell."

Pachter's comments came after NPD released US sales figures for April, revealing that although PS2 and PSP are selling well the Game Boy Advance is proving more popular than PlayStation 3.

"It's not good news for Sony that most consumers are balking at paying the prices asked for PS3s," Pachter said.

PS3 is truly next gen

10 year life span(when i buy something i want it 2 be the best of its generation and last as long ass time - i dont want to drop 400 on a new system every where *cough cough xbox360 cough* or be wrapping my system in towels for it 2 work*

this door knob proberly cant afford a PS3 and thats y he is hating lol

PS3 isnt a little girls machine - its high tech stuff and its the true HD system

when HDTV came out i didnt see ppl crying about the price - ppl that want it will buy it - its that simple

This guy loves the ps3. I have never heard him say a bad thing about it. I almost fell off my chair when I read this. If he says that ps3 is having an issue, there is one.

I am not going to disagree with the point you are making, but they are besides the point this guy is trying to make.

PS3 is truly next gen - True... and?

"10 year life span(when i buy something i want it 2 be the best of its generation and last as long ass time - i dont want to drop 400 on a new system every where *cough cough xbox360 cough* or be wrapping my system in towels for it 2 work*" Does not change the fact that not everyone will pay $600 for a game console.

"this door knob proberly cant afford a PS3 and thats y he is hating lol" What are you blind? Didnt you see the NPD this month? it's not only this "door knob" but many people... The 360 sold 2X more than the PS3 and the wii more than both to to price point. Get the Idea?

"when HDTV came out i didnt see ppl crying about the price - ppl that want it will buy it - its that simple" Dumb logic... an HDTV is use for more than playing Motorstorm... People are more willing to buy something that they believe can benefit and be use by everyone in the house.... and NO.. people will not just buy it... as proven since the PS3 launch.

Sony will need to drop the price.. and not just $100 since it would just be the same price as the the 20GB HDD SKU they just took off the market, but at least $200 to put it head to head with the 360...
The problem is that even at $400 lost of people still believe it's too expensive (Why do you think the PS2 is selling well? Why do you think the 360 keep losing to the PS2?). Many people would love if the PS3 or the 360 would be price at $200-$300.

No one is talking about power or next-genism... Only price point. Next Gen consoles are too expensive to the main stream. Period. It's a simple as that.

Today you can buy an HD TV for $600... and though I would pay $600 for a game console (Hard core gamer here) not every parent or non-hard core gamer will pay $600 for a game console... remember most people out there dont know about @home... We do.. we come here every day.

IBLEEDBLU - you are obviously a complete sony fanboy so I will forgive your delusions.

Michael Pachter is pretty knowledgeable and this statement is in fact a bit of a turn around for him as I remember him saying previously he thought that sony's long term plan would make them king of the consoles by 2010. He's obviously been keeping an eye on the sales, and they haven't been even what he was expecting.

Consoles fail because 3rd party's stop making games for them if there aren't enough units out there as it means they lose bucketloads of money. Sony has to keep the sales at a consistently high level to prove to publishers that they are succeeding, and if major publishers like Ubisoft are worried, sony should be worried too.

...and as said before, if PS3's so powerful, when's it going to prove it? PS3 still doesn't have any game (as in, real demoed gameplay) that surpasses 360.

IBLEEDBLU - "when HDTV came out i didnt see ppl crying about the price - ppl that want it will buy it - its that simple"

What kind of people are you talking about, celebrities and very wealthy citizens. I don't think you understand what has happened(at least here in the US) since the PS2 was last launched.

Some Things that have sky rocketed.
***************************** *********
-GAS have gone up.
-RENT/HOUSING has gone up.
-TRANSPORTATION has gone up.
-PARKING has gone up.
-9/11 really shook the ECONOMY.
-Now in the NEWS, GROCERY prices have gone up , because of bad crops, and the GAS used to deliver the goods.
***************************** *********
You know, what really has not CHANGED for a lot of Families, that have had money every time X-mas rolls around, to purchases games and consoles for loved ones?

*PAYCHECKS haven't adjusted to the RISING COST OF LIVING. Thats right..

I was a poor college student, that barely could of afforded the PS2, well it took me 2 years, let alone an HDTV at the time. Now the PS3 is more expensive then, lets say, $300 bones. This was SONY's strategy after all and not the Consumers.

We all know why the PS3 is not selling, even though Fanboys such as urself already gobbled one up.(maybe) Sony make most of it's money on CASUAL gamers and of course a lot of these casual gamers are not hardcore, have wealthy parents or have that kind of money.(there are exceptions that will work hard I know) $600 dollars is rent for some people that can barely get by. I know a lot of people can speak from experience on this board..and off

If your not complaining about HIGH-PRICED ELECTRONICS, you probably don't need to, because you have means of getting the product, for which a lot of gamers, that have stood next to SONY, the last 10 years currently, do not.

With prices, that have risen for lots of neccesities, it doesn't give the families any more confidence, of PURCHASING a $600 CONSOLE + warranty + a Game+ Extra controller + peripherals and let alone an HDTV, just for their children's Gaming pleasures, while there is no carton of Milk in the fridge half of the month.
