A Gamer Limit Guide: Competitive Gaming

Gamer Limit writes "We've all seen pictures or heard stories of Korean professional gamers raking in cash by playing Starcraft for crowds of adoring fans. We've also seen similar success here in the States, albeit on a smaller scale, with gamers like Fatal1ty marketing his own brand of gaming hardware. I'm sure many of you have asked yourselves, "How does one get involved in competitive gaming?""

cod4 promod was a nice attempt. But in the end it still just cod's version of cs.

dust2 alone probably has more play time than all halo's combined.

no

Halo 3 always has like 300k players online, it's just sick how active it is.

In comparison to popular pc games:
ALL OF BATTLE.NET averages under 200k on average
All games logged across xfire is under 150k on average

CS1.6 / Source has no where near that amount of userbase online, and they conveniently do not provide statistics for their sales or networking usage like other PC companies do (Blizzard) so that they can make consumers believe the games have the popularity of console titles (which they do not). This data is fairly easy to provide, they don't release the details because the entire STEAM platform is not as profitable as they lead on.

I would estimate that CS1.6 and source combined has an average online userbase of under 70k, which of course is nothing to sneeze at.

Oh wow, I gotta bridge I wanna sell you real cheap.

Hard to believe that some of those games are still as competitive as the day they came out.

Ziriux2922d ago

Yea, look at Halo 2, it still get's played up the ass.

Fullish2922d ago

I blame it on the Koreans and Starcraft

Ziriux2922d ago

Yea, Counter Strike is all I have to say. Talk about a game that was perfectly made for competition, from the interface, to gameplay and community, from the beginning this game was made to be a tournament title. Years have gone by and multiple versions have come out and all that the game has done is fill seats up with gamers. By far the greatest FPS of all time on the PC.

My friend tried to make pro Halo circuits: he ended up being sponsored and making semi-pro.

Dreams come true!
