For years, the Need for Speed franchise reigned as the king of driving games. Installments like Hot Pursuit 1 and 2, Underground 1 and 2, and Most Wanted helped the series become a multi-platform dynasty. Though, the grind of producing a new game each year eventually caught up with the developers -- resulting in two consecutive sub-par outings in Pro Street and Undercover. EA acted decisively, by wiping the slate clean and announcing that the series would be relaunched with new games -- each tailor-made for the audience of the console it will be played on. Need for Speed: Shift now has the difficult (and unenviable) position of being the first to lead the charge of returning the series to its former stature on the HD-generation platforms (360, PS3, and PC).
