The decline, and the need for story-driven games

As much as there are plenty of good games out there at the moment, it is clear that there is currently a lot of repetition in the types of games that companies make and this really is quite an issue. If you look at most of the games out there you just see countless amounts of shooter games, in first-person or third-person, or racers and perhaps the odd old-gen platformer game. Where are the story-driven games that don't necessarily have pointless violence and meaningless missions? Where are the games that really make us think and provoke emotions when we play them? (Culture, Heavy Rain , Industry, PS3)

Bullshit. I have found almost universally that a game that leans heavily on story plays like crap. There are of course exceptions, but by in large, I would rather have a game that PLAYS awesomely than tells a frickin story.

Now, I trust Heavy Rain to pull off both, but lets not forget that complex combat situations are handled with... quick time events. What is this, the interactive video days of the 90's?

It's funny how it seems the PS3 is going to be the console for these types of games, like Heavy Rain and The Last Guardian. I don't think lots of the games kale said really are those types of games though, with platformers and shooters making that list. What were really need is more Heavy Rains, Dreamfalls and Mass Effect had a good story (unfortunately the gameplay on Mass Effect wasn't amazing though). Actually one game that had a really good story was Mirror's Edge, that game is soooo underrated!
