Contra was really at its best in the '90s, and whether due to lack of consumer interest or the company's inability to improve upon it, Konami is reluctant to give people anything more. You know, such as a Contra that makes use of today's 2D graphical possibilities (even if it's on the Wii -- look at Murumasa), or a Contra that attempts to improve on enemy UI, rather than just throwing wave after wave of mindless drones at you. There's certainly more that could be done with the series.
Nobuya Nakazato, director of Contra 3 and Contra Hard Corps, also served as a producer on this game. Here's hoping if it sells well enough that he'll get to make the actual Contra rebirth people have been waiting for.
