Square Enix raising the bar for "international" editions with Star Ocean: The Last Hope

Square Enix's international editions like Kingdom Hearts Final Mix and Final Fantasy XII International usually have English voice acting and Japanese subtitles.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope International has English subtitles.

On top of that, this scan from Famitsu says players will be able to choose French, German, and other text options from a menu. You can also choose either English or Japanese voice acting. And since the PlayStation 3 is region free Star Ocean: The Last Hope International is probably the most import friendly Japanese RPG to date.

its not that its going to import freindly. it just makes things cheaper.

Dragun6195335d ago (Edited 5335d ago )

You can Import it, Ps3 has no region locked games along with the fact that the international version supports English Dub and sub. Only problem would be that it's a bit pricey to import it.

Anyways, SquareEnix saw how much PS3 Slim sold in a week (150k in JP, 550k worldwide) and finally decided to support the PS3. This makes Yoichi Wada a fool for not supporting PS3 in the beginning.

Square-Enix lowers the bar for standard, western editions with FFXIII.

vhero5335d ago

Another 360 exclusive bites the dust... Not only that yet again PS3 gets a superior edition again... You must feel like a bunch of BETA testers buying it for the 360 first? Thank god I don't buy JRPG's for my sons 360.

saint_john_paul_ii5335d ago

I know that its import freindly, just that it makes things cheaper and easier for them to pack everything in one disc.

rockleex5335d ago (Edited 5335d ago )

Square Enix simply wanted to make it hard for the Playstation 3 to succeed.

http://www.gamespot.com/ps3...

In the second paragraph, Michihiro Sasaki, the Senior Vice President of Square Enix states:

"We don't want the PlayStation 3 to be the overwhelming loser, so we want to support them. But we don't want them to be the overwhelming winner either, so we can't support them too much."

Making money on the HD consoles wasn't Square Enix's main criteria. They were mainly interested in seeing how much control they have over the console war.

beardpapa5335d ago

^ Apparently their "control" over the console war doesn't do very much if it isn't pro-Sony. I say that's PR BS. Swimming in $$$ cheque books more like it.

Swiftfox5335d ago (Edited 5335d ago )

Will I do agree Square Enix is to blame but I feel you misunderstood his quote.

I interpret it as he doesn't want to the PS3 to be the clear cut winner or loser, he wanted to draw in revenue from every available resource.

High profile games are very expensive to develop (regardless of system). They know that in order to draw in the most money they need to release on both consoles. However, they also know that the Xbox 360 is none too popular in Japan and a simultaneous release would see dismal sales for the system. On top of that, they know that in the West, their mainstream games are not as popular but they know what console is on top numerically in that territory.

Bye delaying the PS3 version for a year they can maximize sales in their home territory AND in the west for the Xbox 360. This also means an increase in sales for the Xbox 360 which turns into more of SE's games sold on that platform in the future.

The more competition, the greater the profits.

Square Enix isn't the only Jp developer to practice this and they won't be the last. As long as there is a potential for money to be made this will continue.

rockleex5335d ago (Edited 5335d ago )

PS3 and 360 are fighting over the same same potential 150 million or so gamer audience.

Most developers don't want to develop for multiple platforms for each and every HD game. They want their games to be released on whatever system has the most market share for that audience.

Developing for one console means less money being spent.

Why would they want to spend more money, to make the same game, for more consoles, just to reach 100% of their audience that they could have reached if just one of the consoles had total 100% market share?

Of course, its near impossible for one console to have 100% market share unless its the only console competing for that market audience. Which is why once one of the HD console has 75% market share or more, developers will find it no longer viable to spend extra money just to make their games multiplat. That's how every generation works.

But they're forced to make multiplats because neither the PS3 nor the 360 has a significant lead on the other one.

You can bet they want that day where they'd only need to develop for just one console to come sooner rather than later. Its just nonsense for a developer to wish for the days of multiplats to last even longer than it needs to.

Swiftfox5335d ago (Edited 5335d ago )

Hmm. You just made my point. =P

Square is gaining the most money it can by using both platforms to sell it's product. When one console outpaces the other then games will come more for that system. All I did was explain the year long delays between Xbox360 releases and the PS3's.

Edit: I never said it was Square Enix's goal to make a multiplat utopia, I was staying that for right now they are trying to maximize their sales in this mixed market.

rockleex5335d ago (Edited 5335d ago )

Your point is that Square Enix IS NOT prolonging the multiplat utopia. While I'm arguing that their words and actions are helping to prolong this multiplat utopia.

Just read this statement again:
"We don't want the PlayStation 3 to be the overwhelming loser, so we want to support them. But we don't want them to be the overwhelming winner either, so we can't support them too much."

These words, followed by Square Enix's actions this generation, clearly show that they want to prolong the "multiplat utopia." Simply for their own amusement or whatever psychotic reasons Yoichi Wada has come up with.

By the way, thanks for being able to carry a debate without the usual fanboy flamebait that usually run rampant on this website.

SaiyanFury5334d ago

Allow me to personally exclaim, "YES!!!!!"

I don't have to suffer through painful English voice acting, I can listen to the game in Japanese and it'll have English subtitles! This is even better than a North American version! Thank you S-E. :D

saint_john_paul_ii5335d ago

Redempteur5335d ago

Sarcasm5335d ago

You guys must be playing the 360 versions if you're hearing "PPooofftttt" and everything stops working.

:)

Ravage275335d ago

but i'm a little worried since there was no mention of improved resolution...i have not played any sub-HD PS3 game yet and i really don't want to :/

On a sidenote, this pretty much confirmed the reason why FF13 does not support dual language voice

The Wood5335d ago

things like this kinda give more credence to the reasons the languages have been omitted. There's no excuse really except the obvious....time will tell

PlayStation Plus is a secret paradise for RPG fans

From games that digitaltrends DeAngelo Epps has always wanted to play but missed out on, like Odin Sphere, to newer titles that he'd love to re-experience like Yakuza: Like a Dragon, there was enough there to justify diving back in. And those titles aren’t even a small percent of what’s available here. Vanillaware titles, Square Enix games, NIS franchises he’d never even heard of — there’s a whole lot to dig into.

PSPlus is Amazing for RPGs and NIS America, Square Enix and Vanillaware games are perfect for PSPortal.

LG_Fox_Brazil148d ago

Not really a 'secret' but a paradise indeed, I just finished Soul Hackers 2, pretty good, and started Labyrinth of Galleria and I am having a blast. Tons of great RPGs in the PS4/PS5 family

Mr_cheese148d ago

Secret is the click buzzword. Can't have a title without bait these days.

anast148d ago

secret, shadow, hidden

OtterX148d ago

Perfect for playing on the Portal, since rpgs can be such timesinks. For those people who can't stay glued to the TV, it's good to give some freedom around the house, out on the porch or whatever. I haven't picked up a Portal yet, bc of life priorities, but I definitely anticipate picking one up asap and playing more rpgs!

ziggyzinfirion148d ago

I'm currently playing Final Fantasy VII:Remake for the first time on PS5 and I am freaking blown away by this game so far. I don't know why I waited this long or due to my huge backlog but had to be honest, this game exceeded my expectations.

OtterX148d ago

Yea, story pacing aside, the combat system is pretty killer, especially if you slow it down to play it more like a tactical turned based jrpg!

I actually wish FF16 had gone this route, instead of the DMC route. The FF7:R system gave enough action for those who wanted to play that way, while still appeasing us old school turn based jrpg fans.

Glad you're enjoying!

crazyCoconuts148d ago

Some of the best in game HDR I've ever seen in that game. I liked it a lot too. My first final fantasy game believe it or not

A beginner's guide to Star Ocean

Star Ocean is one of those series that did, and still does, things that others don’t. Think of it as a JRPG for fans of series like Star Trek. The casts regularly involve people from more advanced civilizations getting involved with those who are still growing, even though there are various measures in place to allegedly stop that sort of interference. As a result, people get energy weapons, cyborgs, magic and people who can turn into cats. It is a lot to take in.

Let's see here. There was another classic JRPG series that started this SCI Fi. It was Phantasy Star by Sega. Before Star Ocean, there was Phantasy Star 1-4 on Sega consoles

Bhuahahaha1604d ago

a beginners guide to star ocean....after playing the 3rd game
you've been told that the universe (SO lore) is just a ------------------- and close the book

VsAssassin1604d ago

Yeah, that plot twist didn't work for me. I wish SO3 isn't canon, but it is. Anyway, SE can just sweep SO3 under the rug perhaps by soft rebooting the franchise.

Nerdmaster1604d ago

The first two were so great, among the top RPGs on 16 and 32-bit era. I wonder why it went downhill after that...

LiViNgLeGaCY1604d ago

I still regard the 2nd Story as one of the greatest JRPG's of all time.

ChronoJoe1604d ago

Play the PS1 game and then the PS2 game and then the rest probably aren't worth your time unless you're a superfan of the series. I think that's all you need to know.
