Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 has never been a mass market hit in Japan, however high sales for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 Slim hardware and year-over-year stability of Nintendo Co.'s Wii leaves little room for the 360 to succeed in Japan.
Thats a bit of a shame as they really gave it a good go this gen with the exclusive JRPG's. I guess the hardware reliability is still the issue hurting the 360 the most worldwide. Because apart from that I can't really think of a reason why the 360 didn't do better in Japan. Maybe the Japanese just prefer there local hardware.
Microsoft have succeeded in selling more then they did with the first xbox . What they need to do figure out how to get more consoles in households .
yeah i think the only thing standing between mirosofts path is microsoft... they pretty much shot themselves in the foot with the reliability issues... those free repairs are a god send but they shouldn't break down as often as they do... hopefully they've learned their lesson and make it right next time.. coz they've done a greatjob making the xbox a major brand this gen
"What they need to do figure out how to get more consoles in households . " One word my friend... NATAL
"yeah the only thing standing between mirosofts path is microsoft" "those free repairs are a god send" "hopefully they've learned their lesson and make it right next time.. they've done a greatjob making the xbox a major brand this gen' Boggle.
I have to admit, Microsoft tried really hard to crack Japan, but came up a little short... I guess Mistwalker is the only other hope for the 360 in Japan, because SquareEnix's efforts have done hardly anything at all. A major RPG like Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts would have to be entirely exclusive to the 360 to have any hope of really "saving" it in Japan this gen., but that would never happen, because it most likely wouldn't be profitable for either Microsoft or Square. "One word my friend... NATAL" What the heck is Natal going to do? If all of the JRPG's on the 360 haven't done the job, I doubt Natal is going to do anything in Japan at all.... honestly, I don't see what else Microsoft can do in Japan this gen. with the 360 because it seems that they've already dealt all of their cards by securing JRPG's, but it still wasn't enough.
Why are people acting like Natal will be he second coming of the xbox? Its another Add-on peripheral when are those game changing?
"Why are people acting like Natal will be he second coming of the xbox?" For the same reason Alan Wake was latched on to before its disappointing unveiling. When you only have one thing to hype, you hype it like your life depends upon it.
Yeah they haven't had any luck so far. But they should keep trying. Eventually they will figure it out.
"Maybe the Japanese just prefer there local hardware." What has it been now? Seven years that same silly rationalization has been made? The Xbox is a niche product. Targeted mainly at: * Bitter ex-Dreamcast fans * Windows gamers a demographic of 25 million or so people mostly from the US and the UK. A relatively tiny group of fringe gamers relative to the overall console market who hate 'teh Evil Sony'. The question isn't why did the Xbox 360 fail in Japan just like the first Xbox, but who the hell ever thought such a shoddy product ever had a chance.
'What they need to do figure out how to get more consoles in households .' that's an easy one. put little feet on it and sell it as a PS3 stand
"One word my friend... NATAL " lmao
they're going to start moving their JRPGs to the PS3 too. In fact, some already have (like Tales...) This is a great time to be a gamer. A JRPG gamer.
Japanese know their tech. They don't buy crappy and/or unreliable electronics thats for sure.
"One word my friend... NATAL " March 2010 ... the 3-5mil japanese ps3 owners buy ps3 motion controller April-May ... ps3 motion controller showed off to friends, gains appeal June-??? ... people buy ps3 for motion controller Late 2010 ... Natal comes out... a little too late to save the 360
Why would they buy a 54%? When they have GREAT alternative - PS3.
what all of you should know about the Japanese are they are not too willingly to change brands! they are quite rigid with their brand of choice and not that many are willing to opt or try something else! it just happen that Sony and Nintendo are the only companies they trust in the video game market and making it hard to crack! the xbox flopped hard in Japan but M$ made an early shot this gen for a mere chances but looking at where it is now, it's safe to say that it's already too late for M$! I'm not bashing M$ or anything but saying it by looking at the bigger picture here. Japanese prefer handhelds and thus we have DSi and PSP dominating the sales chart! they like JRPG and while M$ has struck them with some exclusive JRPG, nothing changed except for a while! now that Sony is already on the roll with the slim, and Nintendo is very likely to slash price soon for the Wii, sadly for M$, it's game over! unless if they are willing to take a loss with gambling to sell the 360 somewhere at $150 and keep the exclusives coming! that might give them a chance eventhough only god knows if it will work!
Atleast I have ONE japanese friend on my friendlist :)
who ever came up with that crappy pun headline should be taken behind a barn and be thoroughly beaten. EDIT: i dont mean to come out like a bat out of hell, but damm i hate crappy puns. I HATE IT!!!!!!
I say let the horses have some fun
LOL. Sorry, but I thought it was hilarious, ha ha :)
MS will not be able to put a huge dent in the Japan Market UNTIL NATAL releases. Then watch out.....
Natal will be Holiday 2010 at earliest. It's over for MS in Japan.
That's going to be bit of a problem for Microsoft.
Yeah it might be all on for young and old once Natal is released. But it's gonna have to be pretty bloody good to get the Japan numbers up for the 360. And who's to say the Japanese won't just flock to the PS motion control thingie?
Even though you posted before me, we both know I beat you to it :) EDIT
had a chance.
But Ms has surpassed the first xbox . They have improved ....nothing dramatic but they have improved .
Baby steps. I wish them all the best next gen.
same in euro.. ps3 has a 1 million lead, inspite of the brokebox 1.5-year headstart.
their cheap knockoffs built by sweatshops have more build quality than a xbox 360
Yes you did beat me to it. But it is a valid point. Well done.
That MS are hoping that Natal will change there fortunes in Japan. To do that they will have to show it with something new in the way of software (not the same burnout and breakout demos) at TGS. They are also going to have to release as close to the PS wand as possible. I believe the hardware itself is close enough to do this, but the games? I hope for Microsoft's sake that their first party developers have been working on something thats close to release. Milo is the kind of weird stuff the Japanese love. what do you think?
Why would Natal be any significance? Given the amount of spikes the exclusive RPGs did for the 360 in Japan, software wasn't the issue. It's the Hardware that Japan isn't used to. Even if Natal manages to make some sort of interest in the Japanese market, it will be short lived because they still aren't going to buy faulty hardware.
2005 was a pretty LONG time ago. They had a year with no PS3 or Wii. They lost, fair and simple. :)
They would have to release Milo in Japan but instead of the boy in the demo they would have to have some ambiguously young anime / hentai looking girl as the principle character.
The 360 is dead in Japan, fact.
Fuc# off.... lol :)
greatest title in the world, I applaud the author of the article with a standing ovation
I don't ever recall Microsoft having any strategy for Japan aside from having 1-2 exclusive JRPGS.
because it keeps red ring'n, and is not worth a dam
faster than stir fry take out
Microsoft is going to start packing in 360 systems with your weekly ads.
Last or 3rd any way look at it its still the same nothing changes. Once this so called company stood tall as the mountain and today it is beneath my foot. Just like you droids are not worthy to look up at me until you get out of that pathetic low life 3rd place everyone in the industry will not recognize you as a console but as 3rd or last. Laters 3rd or Last.
HAHAHAHAHA! ONLY ONE BUBBLE! HAHAHAHAHA! .....
Xbox360elite is basically talking to a brick wall at this point.
It gets spun alot by fanboys saying crap but they REALLY have given it a good attempt at cracking Japan, they provided a hell of alot of RPG's etc etc and other games Japan usually eats up but they just aren't having it. I think it -really- has come down to just Japanese company loyalty.
Ha the 360 has been dead in Japan for a while now. After 2009 is over the Japanese won't even know what a 360 is.
360 is died in japan and not have 1 chance against ps3..
I agree, BAR none, Japan likes quality hardware, clean and reliable, RROD killed it for them the did the whole "typical" american product MS cant have unreliable hardware floating around when their competition doesnt, the problem with the orignal XBOX if any recalls, they did polls people said it was "too big" for their house holds
that the Japanese did not like the screwing over your customers for profit part of Mircrosoft's philosophy.
The Japanese know quality electronics, that and autos practically drove their economic miracle of the 50's-70s. They are not going to buy crap hardware no matter how good the games.
I love my Nissan's,my Sony and Toshiba TV's..etc I admire them as a people. But when I occasionally see what games are so popular there....oh another Pokemon game. I have no idea what MS could do to make a larger dent in that market, but with their heavy hitting titles often being 180 out from ours...I dont know why MS is even there. It hasnt been a great home console market for Nintendo or Sony really (this gen). But being Japanese companies they have established franchises that cater to the market. I see the Natal thing was laughed off. How do we know they wouldnt go NUTS over it? You never know..... I laughed at Scion's and thought the Wii wouldnt do as well as it has. Actually I still laugh at Scion's. If you drove a 4 door anything to school when I was a kid (let alone a BOX), you had moms car.

Hey where's N4G Shane Kim? I wonder what he has to say.
I thought it was a joke. Sounds like there is some other unsaid reasons behind his departure.
Dear Microsoft, 3 points: Next go around, make sure your console doesn't break down over and over again. Sending it off to repairs sucks. Study companies like Apple and how they were able to penetrate the Japanese market. Cool factor is important. Stylishness and reliability enforce this. Bottom line: Have a SOUL. Invest in first and second party studios IN Japan that are actually making console games and not relying on buying exclusives from 3rd party's or PC devs to port PC games to your console. Hope that helps, Sincerely, Patterson
ranch dressing over a pice of crap dose not change that it is a pice of crap so another add on will not change ms presence in japan
1. reliability, japan takes their tech seriously 2. japan needs games and hardware......... they arent going to fall for weak games disguised as great games or weak hardware disguised as the best hardware just cause microsoft can afford the marketing to say so the right to fall for marketing schemes is left to us americans
Xbox is a bit of a 'Johnny come lately' in Japan. Sony and Nintendo, both local brands, are well entrenched in the gaming market there with a decent head start on MS brand penetration. I think a lot of it comes down to local market/brand perceptions. Xbox does extraordinarily well in the US, because they cater for that market well. But in Japan, Xbox doesn't do well because they don't give consumers what Sony and Nintendo do. I live in Tokyo, and all the Xbox 360 games sold here are basically the same as sold in every other country. There are a few Japan only titles, but not many. The Playstation brand on the other hand (across all its platforms) has a vast quantity of games that are Japan only, that is, you wouldn't know they exist outside of Japan, and they're very specific to the Japanese market's taste in games. Big western style titles are easily outnumbered here by Japan only titles at retail. Same goes for Nintendo.
