Double Fine, BioWare, Silicon Knights, Bungie on storytelling

Who Was There: The "Medium Is the Massage: Story Matters" panel at the 2009 Penny Arcade Expo featured a few names that might sound familiar, as well as somewhat ambiguous intentional typo in its title. On hand were Double Fine's Tim Schafer, BioWare's Greg Zeschuk, Silicon Knights' Denis Dyack, and Bungie's Joseph Staten. (Culture, Dev)

Bungie? Storytellers?
That funny since Halo's main concept is a complete rip-off of Larry Niven's novel "Ringworld". Even the Bungie staff know it! This is from Wikipedia:

"Some Bungie staffers felt the change to a ringworld was 'ripping off Larry Niven', according to Bungie artist Paul Russel. Bungie employee Frank O'Connor wrote in a post on Bungie.net that 'the specific accusation that we swiped the idea of a ring-shaped planet wholesale is not accurate,' explaining that Bungie used a ringworld because "it's cool.'"

So you stole someone else's idea because "It's cool"...

You can see the blatant rip-off in these pics. The first picture is of Halo's "Halo" and the second picture is of Larry Niven's "Ringworld".

BTW BioWare tells some of the best stories in the business! Great interview.
