The Pros And Cons Of Firmware 3.0

I don't usually complain about PlayStation 3 firmware updates up until now, but what I saw this morning was absolute rubbish. No offence Sony but I no you do try and these updates are free but I loved the original XMB. Slightly Redesigning the XMB has been a huge mistake on Sony's Part. So I am going to put my hours of searching the XMB and explain best and worst in firmware 3.0

it's a decent update,it gives the xmb more life,make you feel that you are in the ps universe

animated theme is so awesome but overpriced,can't wait to see kz2 animated theme,mw2,gta 4,snake,also hope there's custom animated themes

They took it away because they're ditching the spider-man font. This should be a pro considering games load faster without it.

The only addition bothering me is the friends list. There's much empty space. The large font isn't really bothering me, I could care less. If they gave us the ability to change the font, then they should give us the ability to change the size. I don't think it would be that hard to implement.

I think everything about the update was fine, didn't Know what to think at first but it is fine and it grew on me.

One minor improvement, add most recent trophies and and last three played games to the friends list bar, and the length of the bar would make more sense.

for the extra freezing of a few games. Not sure if its 100% due to the update but uncharted keeps freezing up, and very time I try to load my game it freezes. KZ 2 worked fine. I hope they fix it soon.

will I lose my trophies? Are they stored on sonys servers and attached to my PSN id? Since my ps3 is new I want to reformat my HD and stick with 2.8 for a while, but not if I loose my trophies.

edit- Im doing it anyways. I found I can backup my data so hopefully I can restore my save after I reformat my HD.

I don't think you can downgrade an upgraded PS3 that easily! and formatting it won't help either! I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure downgrading FW is still no possible(at least legally!)

I think it's a good update. Dynamic themes are nice. Control video playback with the right stick is nice. While off putting at first, the larger font is nice. The XMB is much more TV friendly because of it and easy to read. What's New is nice...everything is nice! I don't get why there is such a hub-bub over a GOOD firmware update.

Not good idea to merge two styles into one I must say. Hopefully Sony will clear off the unnecessary grey box. But credit must be given whenever it's due, thanks for the BBC iPlayer. Bigger screen viewing instead of small laptop screen is just what I needed for my bedroom. Hopefully ITV player will be added.

what i liked about that, is that I think the animated themes will have their own version of an XMB outro, and i say this because the original animated xmb theme, makes the waves disappear, and then only the sparkles remain for half a minute, fly around the screen and disappear.

Your game will start up from an earlier time so it's quicker. Hopefully they'll let you choose more intro instrumentals. I liked the old intro music. Now it sounds too antique.

I love the new update, looks nicer and runs alittle more better then before. The friend list change was a good idea to stop the font from matching your background, but to some people that don't like it, I would say Sony should later on add a off and on switch for it.

I mean then people can choose the old style friend list or new, but everything else is awesome and I'm happy Sony does it all for free to. Oh a people that said Uncharted doe freeze up.....So far no problems on my end and it runs great.

good job. keep everyone talkimg about ps3. sony if youre listening to n4g, I want designs on my xmb. i want more customization. more styles to choose from. with the friends list, i want to be able to either turn that grey rectangle into a cooler shape and tweak opacity or give me the option to add my own info into it. like trphies and games i last played.

Since the announcement of ps3 slim the XBUTTS have all gotten thier p$3,s. Except for xboxelite and corywebb.
this GUY has been busy throwing his medication into the sink because he sold the families pig for a xbox360 elite and it rroded. I just figured out how to turn off that annoying "What's New" scroller -- the option is there in System Settings. I'm glad it's optional!

You're wrong marcindpol. If you go to system settings there is a option that says Display [What's new], you can use it to stop your PS3 from displaying the whats new when you turn on your PS3.

PS3 nit-picking has become fashionable again. I really cannot believe the amount of fuss over how the friends list looks, personally I prefer it now than the dull look it had before. I admit I didn't like being taken to the the "what's new" area when I start up the ps3 but its such a minor problem and I am starting to prefer it now as I have fast access to the PS3 store.

The new XMB is a change for the better, people will always complain when there is a change but give it a month and all this childish complaints will stop.

So i'm a fanboy because I believe all the fuss made about gray boxes added to your friends list is nitpicking, there are about 10 articles on n4g alone about people being disgruntled about the friends list and you don't find that a little childish. You my friend are the disgrace, you get a free update to the ps3 that adds all sorts of functionality to the system and all you can do is complain, is the look of your friends list the height of your gaming experience?

The graybox is part of the firmware, while the detailed informations about your friend is downloaded from the PSN. And, right now, those details are not on the PSN yet, so no details are showned in the graybox.

Easy, font was change, friend list you couldn't see the games the play and anyways Sony might end up adding on it "How Many Trophy's" they got or something more.

No matter how you put it, all they need to do is have a off and on switch and if you want anything done.... -_- cry to Sony about it, notthing will get fix if you sit at this site an cry about it and not go to Sony's Forums.

To me I don't mind at all and I think people cry to much about little changes that are free and something that doesn't fact your game play.
