I suspect that if the PS3 was more successful early on, it would have bigger impact on their losses. They are probably able to better absorb that up front loss now from profit in other areas such as PSN and thus pushing it more.

We know this because actual historical spending patterns demonstrate this. It was only when the lowest retail price of the 360 dropped to $200 did it begin to outsell the $400+ PS3. Prior to that the PS3's sales curve was way ahead of the 360s and in the last six months before 360 was dropped to $200, the PS3 was consistently outselling the 360 by 35%.

When the 360 dropped from $300 to $200, it's relative monthly sales volume nearly doubled. When the $200 price-point was introduced the 360 went from selling only 65% as much as the PS3 to selling 25% more than the PS3. That's quite a jump.

The question for Sony is whether the $300 price-point is sufficiently low to retake the lead in monthly sales.

It's important to remember that price cuts don't increase demand, they increase the fulfillment of demand. In other words, it allows more people who want one to actually get one.

Ferrari's are very appealing cars that have a lot of demand. Yet very few ferraris are sold because only few can afford them. If ferrari's suddenly sold for a much lower price, it won't actually increase the number of people who want ferraris (in fact, it might have the opposite effect since some of the appeal comes from the exclusivity of a high price) but you can bet that a heck of lot more people will be driving around in ferraris.

That's what Sony's looking at with the PS3 slim and the new price point.

Dam I thought this was real sales data and not just Amazon again. All this says is the Elite has moved up in ranking by huge jumps vs a week or two ago. PS3 always wins at Amazon but because the 360 has more SKUs it always ways wins NPD.

There's a lot more xbox 360 users owners out there than PS3 and i think a lot of the 360 owners will pick up one these slims and vice versa so the PS3 i think will sell a bit more than the 360.

The gaming world is not just made up of fanboys.... they make up less than 2% acutally. So expect a lot system sales for the next few months... with the PS3 having the edge not just due to 360 owners buying but folks choosing it as an alternate to a regular blu ray player also with that great price point.

Where is the incentive for someone looking for a player to purchase the ps3 slim for $200 more?

I can see it selling more to existing owners of wii and 360 to complement their gaming collection. It wont surprise me if there are more ps3 owners getting a 360 for the same reason. Nothing wrong with playing all the systems...well maybe an empty bank account could be a problem.

warhawk and uncharted are actually 2 of my favorite games THIS gen. i have uncharted 2 and GOW BOTH on reserve and i am more than excited for star hawk. I've actually been thinking about getting a 360 myself.

But I have a dilemma. I never had an original Xbox, so getting a 360 would be kind of like getting two systems in one. But since the Arcade doesn't have a harddrive and isn't backwards compatible, that's out. I don't have an HD TV either, so the HDMI cable that currently comes with the Elite is useless to me. That just leaves the Pro, which is about to be discontinued, so I only have maybe a few weeks left to get it.
