Though the PlayStation 3 is not locked by any particular region, meaning a Japanese PS3 should play European titles, there is one caveat as far as technology is concerned.
This actually relieves me. At first I was under the impression that I would need a PAL tv to play ANY PAL game. That would blow!
Well that's old info
I can't believe joystiq made a story out of this! And they call themselves a gaming site... Sony or MS should buy the idiots and can all their butts! And trying to screw with Jaffe, thats just stupid! lol
Well I didn't know. I'm still using an old TV..actually most my friends are too. We're waiting for our old TV's to die or until Feb 2009.
also lotsa movies ARE region locked, and ALL PS2 and PS1 titles are region locked (in case you want to play the old games ;) ) and then you have to add toll and taxes and shipping ontop .. not a bargain in my view, cause you also have no one to turn your warranty in in a rare case of a defect ....
not really sonys problem. they make European ps3's for that. not to satisfy some Americans need to be the first kid on the block to have a ps3...
is the NTSC's version inability to play Pal DVD's. I've got a bunch of original, legitimate, region-free DVD flicks I purchased in Italy a few years ago. Even the cheapest of my numerous DVD players are able to convert the Pal image for playing onto my NTSC television. Imagine my surprise and frustration when, shortly after popping in one of my aforementioned Pal flicks into my shiny, new, state of the art(?) $700 PS3, I'm greeted with an on-screen message that the video signal is not supported. Note that I'm not referring to region restrictions, and video signal only. I've been casually trying to come up with a way to get Sony's attention on this absolutely unacceptable issue, in an effort to have it fixed, but haven't yet proceeded in any way. I'm sure it's a matter of a simple firmware update. Any ideas? (BTW: I don't see having multiple DVD players hooked up to my TV as a viable solution; the PS3 should be albe to handle Pal right out of the box...just like Wal-Mart's barebones $30 DVD player.)
dude-I'm totally feelin you on that one.unfortunately on thing the 360 totally excels at-they all work.It really frustrates me though that I can't watch pal on my ps3.
