Bungie: Halo 2 matchmaking was "leap of faith"

OXM UK reports that some of Bungie's developers weren't sure that matchmaking was the right direction for online play.

I remember matchmaking, when we rolled that out with Halo 2 it was such a big risk," Brian Jarrard, Bungie's PR and Community Director, tells OXM. "We walked away from the established norm, there were no server lists - we turned the whole thing upside down and it was a big leap of faith." (Halo 2, Xbox 360)

I don't buy games that has Matchmaking only, I'd rather make-matches according to my own preference, not the developer's, how many players are in the server, my favorite map, how long the match is, what type of weapons are restricted, the ability to play with higher ranked players..etc.

I can't help but think Matchmaking is more of 'How to Join a Server for Dummies'. Sorry, but it's a step backwards. and that 'Leap' failed. It's one of the main reasons why I hated Halo 3 and COD4, being knocked half way around the world to play with a guy in Zimbabwe with the worst lag conceivable by man.

And it made me hate console online gaming for a while till I discovered Killzone 2, Resistance, Warhawk, Far Cry 2, Call of Juarez and the bunch that support server browsing. Thankfully some developers out there have some faith left in'em for their gaming population's IQ not being too retarded to scroll lists.

Do you police logic to keep it behind bars, or do you simply get off on translating English via Google?

I already stated in my reply that I hate Halo 3's online, stop subtracting human intelligence every time you post a reply. Hating something for being inferior's simply part of being used to other quality alternatives. Get over it, get out and get some sun and have a human interaction for once in a while.

Browsing's helpful - I wish GTA IV had it, for one - but matchmaking has its uses. L4D nails it, you just load it and you can then jump straight into a match in progress.
