Microsoft to take on Sony at European Game Development

A new European arm of Microsoft Game Studios (MGS) has been announced which will be hosted in the UK and whose aim will be to find and publish new European-made software for its games platforms.

Sony has been an active player in European game development since the PlayStation's first arrival 12 years ago but now MGS is upping its game to try and put the heat on the PlayStation company. They're hoping to find more first party games and also give general support to those making games for the 360, Xbox Live Arcade or the PC.

Microsoft already has ties to Europe with developers such as Lionhead and Rare, and publishing partners like Bizarre Creations, Real Time Worlds and Remedy.

"They're hoping to find more first party games and also give general support to those making games for the 360, Xbox Live Arcade or the PC."

This will keep Sony on its toes pumping out great games and will help Microsoft pump out more first party titles. So development on 2 fronts for Microsoft and a sub platform Live-Arcade + XNA tools for noobs will reap benefits later on down the line.

Agree, Microsoft have always been a software company so it was always weird that Sony were the ones with the developer and publisher advantage in Europe. Now Microsoft are re-addressing the balance and hopefully with some "local" (well a couple of hours plane journey in Europe anyway) Microsoft Game Studios staff on hand to help and advise we should see an increase in quality and quantity of games in the future for the 360.

Does Sony really even HAVE a European edge?
"We already have an established presence in the region with some of the world's best development talent like Lionhead and Rare, and great publishing partners like Bizarre Creations, Real Time Worlds and Remedy."

That's already millions of games sold in the past year (as in, 12-mos) from Euro devs/pubs for Xbox 360 alone. How is that so behind?

yes Sony reeeally does have a European edge. Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Killzone, most of their Sony studios...hence why there are less shooters for Sony and more for Microsoft...as they are American based.

"Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Killzone"
Only one of those has been released, and I'm pretty sure it was outsold by Crackdown. Yes, perhaps on the wings of the H3 beta, but nonetheless. As stated- 360 has already had a few other major Euro releases, and some of them (like PGR3) have sold extremely well.

"hence why there are less shooters for Sony and more for Microsoft"
Dipping back to Xbox and going forward a bit: some European Xbox and Xbox 360 shooters: Mace Griffon, Perfect Dark Zero, Judge Dredd: Dredd vs Death, Rogue Trooper, Sniper Elite, The Club, the Max Payne series, Crackdown... and that was just one page from a quick Google visit. Europe's no stranger to shooters.

Very good move for microsoft.

It's not the location of the studio it's the talent of the developers and publisher that counts, just because the studio is in a certain area doesn't = a quality game that's just stupid.

Setting up new inhouse studios is exactly what Microsoft need to do seeing as Sony at least doubles Microsoft's and nintendo's inhouse studio's (yes that is a fact) and i'm interested to find out more please the location doesn't meen anything though...

well...it took them this long? if they new that in the ps1 era then why didnt they do that when x box 1 was out.

Its profitability before expansion. Its quite possible to expand before making profits but its very difficult. It started late in the cycle for the original Xbox. I saw this coming once they bought up studios like Lionhead.

is it just me or is MS starting to look at the great company sony is and trying to follow in its footsteps

1st with the elite realizing they screwed and & added HDMI etc...now getting more first party support in europe?

to me it seems as MS knows it beat by PS3 and is taking the right action to get back in the race because by the end of the year its not gonna be pretty for xbox

SimmoUK - very good point
