Sega Putting Chromehounds Servers To Sleep

Xbox 360 mech sim Chromehounds is about to have its online component put to sleep. Sega will be taking the game's multiplayer portion behind the barn, hopefully ending its life with the first shot. (Chromehounds, Xbox 360)

This is why MS should have dedicated servers. Especially considering that people pay for online.
At the very least they should be being people the option of using their own PCs as severs.

They
do have dedicated servers, but it's up to the devs if they want to use them or not.

@Godmar
This game is a mmo of sorts so using dedicated servers wouldn't help very much :P!

They do have dedicated servers but this is a SEGA game not an MS game. This is the same as PSN (for example), it is up to the developers who make the games to use dedicated servers. That would be crazy expensive if MS hosted every game released on the system with their own dedicated boxes.

Maybe this new X-Server thing MS is doing will allow folks to still play it on a smaller scale?

uhh godmars
dedicated servers IS the reason why CH is being shutdown. Sega hosted their own. xbox live is a player-to-player service in itself, but Sega decided to pay for their own servers.

like EA, they apparently couldn't justify the cost of running the server with dwindling players online and decided to shut it down.

i really dont know why Sega and MS dont get together and released a patch to maybe implement a player-to-player option to at least have the ability to play with others online, like you know, 99% of all xbox games on xbox live -_-

not one of Sega, or EA's, best decisions

biggest problem with dedicated servers.
is that they all close down eventually.

It's a shame really,
i still play this game at least once every month. Well f@#$ you too SEGA!

Maybe they are preparing for a Chromhounds 2? Who knows. But i do find it rather odd. If Live users pay to be able to play online, and the money we as the customer pay to MS so that they can maintain the servers, why would they allow the developer to close down the online portion of this game? The online is 80% of the game. I understand if there was nobody playing it, heck i haven't put it in for atleast 4 months. I can only speculate that there may be a sequel coming. But really will anyone really care since Mechwarrior will be released next year? I will be buying Mechwarrior over Chromehounds 2 even though i really enjoyed Chromehounds.

One of the few down sides of dedicated servers. When the company decides to pull the plug it's game over man.

It's had a good 3 year run. One of the only compelling mech games this gen.

i thought microsoft used pvp servers, so this game is seperate from it?
v1c1ous  +   1931d ago
yes
Sega, and EA, sometimes host their own servers. the downside to that is that once they shutdown a server, the online portions of the game gets nixed (i.e burnout 1+2 etc)

I wonder how Sega and MS split up the LIVE fee?
v1c1ous  +   1931d ago
they didnt
Sega paid for the server out their own pocket. i assume from the DLC that's sold.

tooo bad but at least it is better than ps3 servers... i was forced as punishement to play online with ps3 once and it was so terrible i cant even explain

uneducated idiots everywhere, slow lag times, high death kill count.... so i tell everyone to buy a 360 and off course only idiots play ps3 so they were all like "go away we like playing on pieces of crap because we are crap"

i was like lol thats funny you guys are funny go away now so i left and went back to xbox live and played with enimen and snop doggg it was mad awesome

hahahahaha cant do that on ps3 can ya???? haha
ssipmraw  +   1931d ago
uneducated? lets see who really is uneducated here...
slow lag times? in saying slow in association with lag you have ultimately nullified this statement meaning youve just stated that the ps3 connection is great
high death kill count...? boy you must suck hard at gaming, what the f does the server have to do with how bad you are?
speaking of pieces of crap, they still havent fixed rrod have they
yeah because we so care about playing with lame celebrities, you have failed in attempting to impress anybody
